Utica Police arrest two juveniles in Mohawk Street incidents
UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — Utica Police arrested two juveniles on Monday night in connection with a weeks-long investigation into menacing incidents on Mohawk Street. According to Utica Police, officers have responded to the McDonald's on Mohawk Street regarding several juveniles over the last several weeks. Witnesses have said that the juveniles have been harassing customers and staff and causing a general disturbance. Police have said that violent behavior with the group of juveniles has increased throughout the investigation. On Monday, May 19, at approximately 9:15 pm, police were called there once again. Witnesses at the scene claimed that the group of juveniles were possibly in possession of multiple handguns. When police arrived on the scene, a group of approximately 10 juveniles fled on foot in several different directions. Two of the group were apprehended; one immediately, one a short distance away. A search of both persons found BB guns, which looked exactly like Glock handguns. Both juveniles — both approximately 15 years old, according to police — were turned over to the care of their guardians. According to police, no charges are currently pending against either juvenile. Police say that they will continue to increase their presence in the area of the Mohawk Street McDonald's to deter the group's behavior. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Frankfort Amazon stabbing suspect arrested
UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — Utica Police arrested a man on Monday who allegedly stabbed a convenience store clerk — along with a pedestrian and an Amazon warehouse employee — over the weekend. On Sunday, May 4, at approximately 4:55 pm, Utica Police officers and firefighters were called to the 600 block of Bleecker Street regarding a stabbing. Upon their arrival, they spoke with people who stated an unknown male — later identified as 22-year-old Daniel Namutereza of Utica — entered the convenience store and attempted to make a purchase there, which was declined on his credit card. According to police, Namutereza attempted to make a smaller purchase, at which point he began to argue with the clerk. As the argument escalated, Namutereza brandished a knife and stabbed the clerk in the face. Namutereza then exited the store and stabbed another pedestrian without provocation. He then fled the scene on foot. Later in the day, as officers were interviewing victims from the previous incidents, a report came in that a male similar to Namutereza was threatening patrons of the North Utica plaza with a knife. He fled on foot before officers were able to respond to the area. On Monday, May 5, the New York/New Jersey Marshal's Regional Task Force provided the Utica Police with information on Namutereza's identity. With that information, both forces were able to conduct surveillance of his residence. When Namutereza exited the residence, he was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Utica Police Department Namutereza was also a suspect in an incident at the Amazon Warehouse in Frankfort earlier in the day. According to the Rome Sentinel, at approximately 3 am that same day, Namutereza allegedly stabbed an Amazon associate, also in the face. Their identity has not been released, nor has their condition. Namutereza was charged with: First-degree Attempted Assault, a Class B Violent Felony, second-degree Assault, a Class D Violent Felony, and fourth-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, a Class A Misdemeanor. Utica Police have said additional charges are likely as the investigation continues. None of the victims' identities or current conditions have been released. Utica Police were also assisted in the investigation by the Town of Frankfort Police, as well as security officers at the Amazon Warehouse in Frankfort. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. NYAG: No charges in Nyah Mway shooting
ALBANY, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — The New York State Attorney General's office released their report on the June 28 death of Nyah Mway at the hands of Utica Police on Wednesday. According to a report by the New York State Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation — released on Wednesday, April 2 — after a thorough investigation of body-worn camera footage, among other things, was undertaken by the Office. They concluded that the shooting was justified they would not be pursuing criminal charges against the officers in the matter. Mway was killed during a struggle with Utica Police on Friday, June 28. At approximately 10 pm on June 28, Utica Police were patrolling an area in West Utica that had two armed robberies earlier that month, including one on June 27. Officers approached Mway and another person, who matched descriptions from the armed robbery on June 27. As they engaged with both persons, Mway fled on foot. According to the report, Mway displayed what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at the officer giving chase behind him. A struggle then ensued, at which point a second officer fired his weapon, striking Mway. Mway was transported to the Wynn Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Further investigation found a pellet gun at the scene, which was recovered and secured by police. According to the OSI's report, given the law and the evidence, a prosecutor would not be able to disprove the justification of the officer's use of deadly force. Therefore, the Office of Special Investigation would not be pursuing criminal charges. The City of Utica's Department of Public Safety issued the following statement on the ruling: With the release today's report from the Attorney General's Office we are happy that there can be some closure for the greater Utica community regarding the tragic death of Nyah Mway on June 28th, 2024. Since that night we have tirelessly sought to build back the relationships and trust with the Burmese and Karen communities, and we feel that those connections have never been stronger than they are today. Our goal from that day and every day since has been to ensure that our department is viewed as a strong partner and trusted entity to the public. Through procedural justice methods, training, and most importantly transparency, we will work to make certain those goals are met. As has been the case all along, this investigation has had a two pronged approach; the Attorney General's and our internal Professional Standards portion. Now that the Attorney General's report has been completed, we will finalize ours after we have convened a Use of Force Review Board as dictated by our policy, but we are pleased that The Attorney General has cleared our officers of criminal wrongdoing We are saddened that this tragedy had to ever occur, but we hope now we can all heal together and build the bridges that are needed. The City of Utica's Department of Public Safety, in a statement on the ruling.
