EPS a coward for inviting DMK allies to alliance: Minister K N Nehru

CHENNAI: DMK principal secretary and Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru said that AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami was a coward who could not counter Union Home Minister Amit Shah's repeated remarks regarding a coalition government in the state. In a statement on Saturday, Nehru criticised Palaniswami for asking DMK allies to join his alliance. 'Speaking in Coimbatore, Palaniswami criticised the Communist parties, stating that they were fading away. He even questioned whether Communist parties still existed in Tamil Nadu. However, later, speaking in Chidambaram, he openly extended an invitation to Communist parties and the VCK to join his alliance. People are confused as to whether both speeches were made by the same person,' said Nehru. 'Knowing that the carpet rolled out by Palaniswami has the blood stain of the fascist BJP, the communists and VCK have rejected his invitation,' he added. 'As in 2021, when people rejected Palaniswami and his blatant lies, they will reject the AIADMK-BJP alliance in the 2026 elections too, and support CM M K Stalin. The Dravidian Model 2.0 government will continue,' he said.

VCK, CPI, CPM turn down AIADMK

Chennai: DMK allies VCK, CPI , and the CPM on Thursday rejected Edappadi K Palaniswami's invitation to join the AIADMK alliance. While CPI state secretary R Mutharasan called the invitation a 'joke', VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan said it was an attempt to create confusion in the DMK front. DMK hit out at EPS, saying the invitation extended to its allies indicated that AIADMK front was weak in its current form. Responding to EPS's statement that he would roll out red carpet for left parties and VCK to join AIADMK front, Mutharasan said "The carpet on which Palaniswami is travelling is blood-stained and not a red carpet, as BJP is in the alliance." "In Coimbatore, Palaniswami said communists have gone extinct, and in Chidambaram, he invites us to join the AIADMK alliance," he said. Thirumavalavan said the invitation, which was a ploy to create confusion in the DMK alliance, will not work. On the remark of EPS that VCK was humiliated by DMK, Thirumavalavan said that expressing the challenges faced by VCK does not mean the party was humiliated. "All parties face difficulties in an alliance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo VCK faced challenges when it was in the AIADMK alliance too. Since we are expressing our difficulties in public, they (AIADMK) are creating an impression that we are humiliated, which is not true," he said. CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said EPS chooses to issue a statement in the morning and contradict it in the evening. "During the Lok Sabha elections, he said he would not align with the BJP, but now he is in alliance with the BJP," he said. "What EPS will roll out for us would not be a red carpet, but a web of deceit," he said, adding that AIADMK itself was caught in the trap of RSS. DMK leader and state MSME minister T M Anbarasan said Palaniswami's desperation to bring more parties into the alliance is an acknowledgment that their alliance is weak.

VCK Chief Thol Thirumavalan Apologises For Controversial Same-Sex Love Remark After Backlash

The controversy erupted after Thirumavalan described same-sex love as 'perversion', garnering strong condemnation from queer activists Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalan has issued a public apology following backlash from the LGBTQ+ community and activists over his comments on same-sex relationships. The controversy erupted after Thirumavalan described same-sex love as 'perversion", a remark that has since drawn widespread criticism, even from within his own political circle. Thirumavalan made the controversial statement during an interaction with media on July 3, where he suggested that same-sex love is unnatural and goes against societal norms. His comments quickly garnered strong condemnation from queer activists, who termed his words regressive and harmful. In response to the public outcry, Thirumavalan took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his regret, clarifying that his words were misconstrued and apologising for any offense caused. The initial remarks were condemned by several LGBTQ+ activists who questioned Thirumavalan's understanding of same-sex love and its significance for individuals in the community. Prominent activists across Tamil Nadu argued that his language perpetuated stigma against queer individuals and set back the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. In a joint statement, the Tamil Nadu Queer Collective (TNQC) demanded that Thirumavalan be held accountable for his words. 'This is not just an insensitive remark. It's a reflection of the deep-rooted homophobia still prevalent in mainstream political discourse. We demand a clear stand from Thirumavalan on his support for LGBTQ+ rights," the group said. The sentiment was echoed by several political commentators who criticised Thirumavalan, a leader from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-aligned alliance, for making regressive statements that ran counter to the progressive ideals that his party and the broader Dravidian movement are known for. The Apology In his apology, Thirumavalan expressed that his remarks were intended to reflect personal views, but he also acknowledged the importance of respecting individual freedoms. His decision to apologise came after discussions with party leaders and allies, who advised him to take a more inclusive stance on such sensitive issues. While some activists and party members welcomed the apology, others remain skeptical, questioning whether Thirumavalan's words were a result of political pressure or a genuine change in perspective. 'An apology is one thing, but we need sustained actions in support of the rights of marginalized communities. One apology doesn't change centuries of societal discrimination," said an LGBTQ+ advocate who preferred to remain anonymous. The comment and subsequent apology have sparked a debate within the Tamil Nadu political scene, particularly within the DMK-led alliance. While some have voiced support for Thirumavalan's apology, others see it as a reflection of the broader struggle within political parties to reconcile traditional values with the growing demands for LGBTQ+ rights. Political analyst K Rajendran noted that leaders in Tamil Nadu, including those in the DMK coalition, have been increasingly caught between promoting progressive social policies and holding onto regional cultural values that may not always align with inclusivity. 'Thirumavalan's apology may have been an attempt to assuage anger, but it raises deeper questions about how politicians truly view marginalised communities," he remarked. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Thirumavalavan alleges attempts to create confusion in DMK alliance

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) founder and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan on Thursday alleged that attempts were being made to create confusion in the DMK alliance. He was responding to AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami's statement that the VCK and the CPI(M) were continuing in the DMK-led alliance despite being insulted by the ruling party, and that the AIADMK was rolling out the red carpet for any party willing to join its alliance. 'The remarks were made in order to create confusion in the DMK-led secular alliance,' Mr. Thirumavalavan said. 'The DMK-led alliance is strong, and the Opposition alliance has not even taken shape. The AIADMK and the BJP are making contradictory statements. Those opposing the DMK are scattered – that is the truth,' he said. Mr. Thirumavalavan ruled out the possibility of a three-cornered fight in the upcoming election. He also met actor-politician Kamal Haasan, who is set to take oath as a Rajya Sabha MP, and greeted him.
