VTuber Sinder controversy explained: Allegations and Full Timeline

The popular Twitch VTuber Sinder has come under negative limelight following accusations from the Vtuber artist Nanoless, who issued a Google document about the termination of work. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Within the same, Nanoless accused Sinder and her manager REDCATED about 'manipulating, using, and dragging them into drama, while sabotaging, slandering & spreading lies about people they thought were the VTuber's closest friends. The document was posted on Nanoless' X handle on April 26, 2025, and the controversy has spread like wildfire since then. Here we take a detailed look at all the accusations aimed at VTuber Sinder and REDCATED. Nanoless accuses Sinder and REDACTED about slandering other creators, exclusivity & blacklisting other creators Nanoless' document consists of several allegations, the first one being about Sinder and REDACTED slandering other creators. As part of the same, the VTuber artist shared several Discord screenshots with that of REDACTED. Nanoless claimed that the two spoke ill and spread rumors about other streamers. Nanoless exactly stated: 'I will start with screenshots showing them speaking ill of other creators & spreading rumors while manipulating me that it's all in our best interest. In addition to spreading ill rumors they also complain and accuse Bao of giving 'their' editor too much work, resulting in the editor not having any time for new clients which will be important later on. The screenshots below show them showing their affection & appreciation immediately followed by spreading rumors & lies to make other clients appear problematic to manipulate any future decisions regarding commissions.' Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Added to this, Nanoless' document also mentions about REDACTED speaking ill about Vtubers like Shylily, who is another popular name. Coming to the exclusivity, Sinder and REDACTED essentially wanted to issue an exclusivity contract but didn't want to pay about the same. Nanoless additionally mentioned that they would compensate for not working with content creators that they had blacklisted. The document mentions: "They mentioned wanting an exclusivity contract, but they didn't want to pay for exclusivity, but rather when a creator from their blacklist comes asking for a commission, they would guarantee me model work for Sinder only and if anyone asked me for commissions, they'd commission me instead to compensate for not working with other creators. This felt very strange given that one of the accusations they made was overworking their editor yet their 'solution' to me working with other creators was for them to essentially overwork me to keep me from working on other projects." She also added: 'The messages below show that their primary concern is that the more non Sinder models I make, the less 'valuable' my existing models become. It's hard to say how much this messed with my mind as an artist that by working with other people I'm somehow making my existing models less special.' The screenshots related to the same are on the document itself. You can find the same by heading over to Nanoless' X account (@Nanoless_) Vampeaches reveals that REDACTED is Sinder's boyfriend Following the official post by Nanoless, Sinder announced that REDACTED will no longer manager her VTuber activities, and completely cut ties with her manager. Vampeaches responded to this post by revealing that REDACTED is Sinder's boyfriend. She mentioned the following: "I remember playing Phasmophobia with you and hearing RED chat away next to you before you first debuted like 4 years ago. You told me he was your boyfriend. Then before we met for Twitchcon you switched up and said 'just so you know my manager is coming with me on this trip' as if I didn't know who he was. It's even ickier to read this tweet knowing he is your significant other and that you're probably going to try and avoid taking responsibility for hurting people who trusted you as friends by nuking the RED side of this duo." Sinder's official apology Finally, Sinder posted a document titled 'My Apology' on April 28, 2025. The same officially confirmed REDACTED as her partner, and the duo were together since she began her journey as VTuber. She said: 'Redacted has been my co-content creator since I began making content, managing all aspects of what I do, and being a major part of why I'm here. We have also been in a relationship since the start of my endeavors. It's no secret that many vtubers choose to keep their public and personal lives separate, and I'm no different. As of yesterday he is no longer working with me, and I have not extensively discussed any of this with him. Where our personal situation goes from here will be figured out between us privately. I never intended to mention us publicly, but given that the claims are out there, I want everyone to know I'm taking this seriously. After years of working on everything together, his hyper business oriented outlook warped my view of what it is I should be doing, and what should be important to me as I navigate this career path. I have a terrible work life balance as it is, and being around projects and streams all day every day made me lose sight of the point. It took all of this happening for me to realize this behavior isn't normal or healthy, and it's not an outlook I want to have. This doesn't absolve me of the things I've willingly done wrong and went along with, or the way I've treated people who were fully undeserving.' Coming to Nanoless' allegations, she added the following: 'In regards to Nanoless, for the majority of the time working with her, Red was the one almost solely doing the communication about new plans and negotiations through his private DMs. Nano had a project server we were all a part of where the actual art and models were worked on, but the conversations were focused around the work itself. I was not fully aware of the extent of Red's manipulation over Nano's commission decisions, and I should've been more diligent in my oversight.' You can check out Sinder's complete apology by heading to her X handle (@SinderVTuber).

Gawr Gura announces Hololive graduation after disagreements with management

Hololive English VTuber Gawr Gura has officially announced her graduation from the agency, marking a significant departure for one of the most recognisable faces in the VTubing world. The announcement was made during a livestream titled "Important Announcement," in which Gura cited disagreements with Hololive's management and company direction as the reason behind her decision. Gawr Gura debuted in September 2020 as a founding member of Hololive EN. Since then, she has become one of the most influential figures in virtual entertainment. Her humour, shark-themed persona, and global appeal made her a standout in the VTuber scene. Her performances at concerts, conventions, and digital events consistently drew large audiences and helped solidify Hololive's reputation internationally. In its official statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Hololive Production confirmed the graduation and expressed gratitude for Gura's contributions. 'We sincerely thank all the fans who have shown their unwavering love and support,' the agency stated. Her departure also reflects a broader trend, as several high-profile graduations have occurred across both the English and Japanese branches of Hololive. Fellow EN talents including Nanashi Mumei, Ceres Fauna, Amelia Watson, and Tsukumo Sana have also announced exits in recent months. On the Japanese side, notable names such as Murasaki Shion and Sakamata Chloe have also stepped away. While reasons for leaving vary, many have referenced either creative disagreements or shifting priorities within the company, including a growing emphasis on idol-style performances and corporate tie-ups over traditional streaming content. Hololive CEO Motoaki "Yagoo" Tanigo acknowledged concerns in a March statement, pledging to improve internal support and communication. Gawr Gura's final live stream is scheduled for May 1, 2025, marking the end of an era for her fans and Hololive alike.

Digital divas: Can Japan's virtual YouTuber craze crack America?

Fans wave glow sticks at an animated character on stage, having packed a sold-out Hollywood concert hall to see their virtual idol perform, showcasing the global ambitions of Japan's VTuber subculture. Pink-haired musician and livestreamer Mori Calliope looks just like a character from an anime, brought to life on stage through a hologram-like illusion. "I don't really like most streamers, but then when I discovered VTubers, I realized, 'Hey, you know, I'm actually into this,'" says Calliope concert attendee Luigi Galvan. "They look like anime characters. I like anime, so it was easy to get into the VTuber format that way." The actors behind VTubers use motion capture techniques to communicate directly online with fans, who can pay to highlight their comments to the character and other viewers. Platforms like Netflix have helped take Japanese anime mainstream, and Calliope's Tokyo-based talent agency wants its roster of virtual YouTubers, or VTubers, to be the country's next big cultural export. Nearly half of top VTuber agency Cover Corp.'s virtual stars under its famous Hololive (stylized in lowercase) brand speak primarily in English, not Japanese, and the company recently opened a U.S. office to accelerate business in North America. Tokyo-based QY Research predicts that the once-niche VTuber market will make almost $4 billion annually worldwide by 2030, up from $1.4 billion in 2024. VTuber Mori Calliope performs for fans waving glowsticks and pensticks during a sold-out concert at the Hollywood Palladium on Feb. 26, 2025. | AFP Around 4,000 fans attended the recent concert in Los Angeles, Hololive's first solo artist gig outside Japan. Does Calliope think virtual YouTubers can really crack the U.S. market? "A couple of years ago, my firm stance was, 'No, it won't,'" says the entertainer, who has over 2.5 million YouTube subscribers. "But these days, I like to be a little more hopeful." Korean rivals Calliope, who playfully calls herself a "Grim Reaper" on a mission "to harvest souls," likes black gothic outfits that contrast with her long pink hair. An alter ego helps audiences "see and appreciate you for what lies within" instead of age or looks, allowing VTubers' talent as musicians and raconteurs to shine, she says. The actor behind this VTuber wished to remain anonymous like most in the industry. Calliope is one of Cover Corp.'s more than 80 Hololive VTubers, who together have 80 million YouTube subscribers globally, from Indonesia to Canada. While Japan reigns supreme in the VTuber world, the country could face fierce competition from neighboring cultural superpower South Korea in the coming years, warns Cover Corp.'s CEO Motoaki Tanigo. "Aspiring K-pop singers have survived tough training and are already professional," making the country a potential goldmine for VTuber actors, he says. "Can we easily find people like that in Japan? Of course not." South Korean VTuber companies "stand a good chance of growing exponentially" in the important U.S. market because American audiences prefer polished performers, Tanigo says. In contrast, in Japan, fans often cherish the process of unskilled idols evolving, he explains. Global expansion can also come with political risks, with one popular Hololive streamer incurring the wrath of Chinese viewers by inadvertently suggesting self-ruled Taiwan — which Beijing claims as its own — was a country. Human touch While VTubers live in a digital world, Tanigo says the human element behind the characters is an important part of their appeal. "In principle, we won't" use generative AI technology to create new virtual talents, he says. "This whole business is based on fans' desire to support someone because of their extraordinary artistic talent," Tanigo says. "I think fans would be left feeling confused as to what, or who, they are rooting for." A Vtuber fan shows memorabilia he purchased at a Hololive pop-up store at the Beverly Center shopping mall in Los Angeles, California. | AFP Calliope fan Ian Goff, 23, agrees, saying he is fascinated by the actors behind VTubers, and their avatars are just the "cherry on top." "You can make a character with AI, but you can't make a person with AI because that's what makes the VTubers who they are," the San Diego resident says. In the rapidly growing, competitive industry, VTubers risk overexerting themselves by livestreaming almost nonstop to grow their fandom. "The longer they go on livestreaming, the more fans watch them," says Takeshi Okamoto, a media studies professor at Japan's Kindai University. "This can potentially amount to exploitation of their passion for the job." Yet the professor — who himself doubles as a zombie-like VTuber — sees a bright future for the industry. With the popularity of virtual worlds like the Metaverse, "a day might come where it becomes more normal for us to live as avatars," he says. "Our lives, then, could more seamlessly fuse with VTuber stars."
