Hyundai Rotem delivers first tram to Canada, making debut in North America

Hyundai Rotem, the railway and defense contractor under Hyundai Motor Group, announced Friday that the first shipment of its light rail vehicles for the Valley Line West project in Edmonton, Canada, had been delivered on Aug. 1 The initial delivery, consisting of a seven-module set, was part of a 218.8 billion won ($158 million) contract secured in 2021. It is the company's first expansion into the North American tram market. The vehicle will undergo approximately 2,000 kilometers of trial runs before entering service on the Valley Line West, a new route linking downtown Edmonton to the city's western districts. All units are scheduled for delivery by 2027. Designed as a bidirectional, low-floor tram with a maximum operating speed of 80 kilometers per hour, the model is built to withstand Edmonton's harsh winters, where temperatures can plummet to minus 40 degrees Celsius. Features include an indoor temperature control system that adjusts to temperature changes and body materials resistant to low-temperature impact. The company added red and white LED indicator lights, reflecting Canada's national colors, as an aesthetic touch and to enhance nighttime visibility. Hyundai Rotem has previously supplied trams to Izmir and Antalya in Turkey, as well as Warsaw, Poland. The company has also advanced hydrogen-electric tram technology through domestic demonstration projects, encompassing manufacturing, testing and infrastructure. 'Following our successful delivery of driverless trains in Canada, we are committed to ensuring Edmonton residents have a safe and convenient transportation option," said a Hyundai Rotem official. 'We will continue to leverage our technology and experience to expand our presence in the global tram market."

First Valley Line West Light Rail Vehicle arrives in Edmonton

The Valley Line West's newest Light Rail Vehicle is seen arriving at the Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility in southeast Edmonton. (Supplied) With construction on the Valley Line West LRT well underway, the city has welcomed the first Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) that will run on the line when it opens sometime after construction is expected to wrap up in 2028. A news release from the city said the LRV was shipped in two sections from Hyundai Rotem Company's facility in Changwon, South Korea, on a roll-on/roll-off ship designed to carry wheeled vehicles. The ship crossed the Pacific Ocean and arrived at the Port of Tacoma, Wash., on July 20 before being transported by truck to the Gerry Wright Operations and Maintenance Facility in southeast Edmonton. LRT Edmonton's newest Light Rail Vehicle is seen being loaded onto a roll-on/roll-off ship designed to carry wheeled vehicles in Changwon, South Korea. (Supplied) 'The arrival of the first LRV is more than just a milestone; it's a sign of momentum for the Valley Line West. Watching this train roll into Edmonton is a proud moment for our team and for the city,' said Brian Latte, director of the Valley Line West with the City of Edmonton. 'This LRV is a part of where we're headed as a city. As Edmonton grows towards two million people, Valley Line West will change how we move, how we build, and how we connect with one another.' There are currently 16 LRVs at various stages of manufacturing in South Korea. Hyundai Rotem will be supplying the city with a total of 46 Valley Line West LRVs which will complement the current fleet of 26 LRVs operating on the Valley Line Southeast. The two sets of LRVs are designed to be fully compatible with the 27-kilometre line. 'We're proud to see the first LRV arrive safely in Edmonton. From initial design, to manufacturing and testing in Korea, to final delivery, this vehicle represents years of collaboration and a shared commitment to delivering a high-quality transit vehicle,' said Chiseung Kim, project manager of the Valley Line West with Hyundai Rotem Company. Edmontonians participated in user testing, interacting with a full-scale mock-up of the LRV in 2023 which shaped the final design. The vehicles will undergo testing and commissioning on the Valley Line Southeast tracks at a later time with measures in place to ensure existing passenger service is not impacted.

Accelerated Valley Line West LRT construction on schedule: City of Edmonton

Construction workers are busy finishing up a stretch of the Valley Line West LRT at Stony Plain Road and 124 Street (CTV News Edmonton/Galen McDougall) The City of Edmonton says its accelerated road work plan is working. On Wednesday, the city and Marigold Infrastructure Partners (MIP) gave an update on the sped-up Valley Line West LRT work. The new plan including full intersection closures along the LRT route began in April and will run until November, with the goal of reducing the overall duration of traffic disruptions and getting LRT road work back on schedule. The city and Marigold said the full closure of Stony Plain Road at 124 Street reopened to traffic on June 11, one week ahead of schedule. Closures on Meadowlark Road and Stony Plain Road are both anticipated to end on schedule, they added. Meadowlark and 87 Avenue was partially closed to traffic May 1 and was expected to reopen Wednesday. Stony Plain Road and 156 Street was partially closed on April 21 and was expected to reopen on Thursday. Stony Plain Road and 142 Street was closed in mid-June and was expected to reopen in mid-August. According to the update, the intersection of 95 Avenue and 156 Street will partially close for nine weeks starting in late July; signage has been posted and more details on traffic impacts will be released later. The last phase will include work on Stony Plain Road and 149 Street. The city and Marigold said that work won't begin until work on Stony and 142 Street is finished. Construction on the Valley Line West began in 2022 and is expected to wrap up in 2028.

Stony Plain Road and 124 Street intersection reopens after Valley Line West LRT construction

Stony Plain Road and 124 Street in Edmonton on June 11, 2025. (Galen McDougall/CTV News Edmonton) The intersection of Stony Plain Road and 124 Street has reopened to traffic, one week ahead of schedule. Marigold Infrastructure Partners, the company building the Valley Line West LRT, fully closed the intersection on April 22 to speed up construction on the project. North and south traffic on 124 Street has reopened at full capacity, but east and west traffic on Stony Plain Road has been permanently reduced to one lane in both directions. Right and left turns are permitted, except for eastbound to northbound left turns, which are permanently banned. Pedestrian access has been reopened throughout the intersection. Marigold says drivers will continue to see construction in the area for several years until the LRT project is completed.
