Two suspects sought in attempted break-ins in Van Buren Township neighborhood

Police in Van Buren Township need your help in locating two individuals caught on camera attempting to break into a car and a home on Tuesday morning. "Right now, we do not have any leads on who they are," said Van Buren Township Detective Lt. Ken Floro. Police say around 3:30 a.m. On Tuesday in the Homestead subdivision off Ecorse Road, two homes were the target of attempted break-ins by a duo that police believe were working together. "We have some video where one of the males appears to be talking to somebody, he's not in the frame of the video; however, both these homes are in pretty close proximity to each other," Floro said. In the surveillance video, a suspect described as a white male with a beard, wearing a baseball cap and a T-shirt with a cross on the back, is seen prowling around a property and attempting to open the door of a parked car. Meanwhile, at a different home nearby, a second suspect police describe as a white male with shaggy brown hair and a tattoo of what appears to be two English D's on the side of his neck, is seen trying to get inside from the back patio. "This is the video of this gentleman. He tries the sliding glass door, and then he moves off the deck and around the side of the house," Floro said. Fortunately, detectives say the suspects struck out. Both the home and the vehicle were locked. It's a good reminder for folks, as police say these types of crimes occur more often in the summer. "You know what's suspicious in your neighborhood, you know which cars belong, which people belong, and if you see something that doesn't seem right, seems out of line, maybe a little suspicious, trust your instinct and call us and let us check it out," said Floro. Investigators are trying to track these two people down. If you have any information that could help with this case, call the Van Buren Township Police Department at 734-699-8943 or email Det. Van Buren Township police warn of "Door Kicking Challenge" social media trend

Police in Van Buren Township, Michigan, are warning residents of a social media trend where kids are ringing doorbells and kicking in doors. Police say anyone participating in the "Door Kicking Challenge" would face a felony offense. The warning comes after two incidents in the area, one of which was caught on camera. "Please talk to your children about the serious consequences of these actions. What may seem like a social media challenge can lead to permanent legal trouble and safety risks for both residents and participants. Let's work together to keep our neighborhoods safe and responsible," Van Buren police said in a post. Police say the first homeowner did not plan on escalating the situation. Authorities found the people involved — a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old — who admitted to doing the challenge. Investigators are now searching for the trio who kicked in the second homeowner's door. "Those three kids will be charged with felony malicious destruction of property and will find themselves in court," Floro said. In the second incident, police say the door and doorframe were damaged, costing over $1,000. The three accused are believed to be in their late teens. While the situation can be a headache for homeowners, authorities advise against taking matters into their own hands. "It's one of those things we'd have to look at circumstances. Being a victim of a crime doesn't give you the automatic authority to go ahead and assault somebody," Floro said. "It can be a little frustrating, especially with something like this that has the potential to turn very dangerous very quickly."

Van Buren police aren't laughing at TikTok door kicking stunt; suspects sought

The Brief Van Buren Township police are looking for 3 suspects in a door-kicking TikTok stunt. Police says the act will be treated as a felony and warn that the culprits may kick in the wrong door. VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (FOX 2) - A simple search on TikTok will result in home security videos of people kicking front doors of homes and running. The videos come from all over country and now you can add Van Buren Township to the list. Local perspective "I saw the trend but I didn't realize it was happening around here until yesterday," said Janna Roberts. Van Buren Township police say they took two reports of doors being kicked this past weekend. "It's a quiet neighborhood, family-oriented," she said. "This is not the neighborhood to come in and do that." A video was submitted to police showing three young males walking the sidewalk in broad daylight when one darts across and allegedly kicks the door of a home. "And I immediately thought this is unsafe. in this world today, you can't go around playing like that," Roberts said. Van Buren Township police say while this may be a trend on social media, it is no joke and considered a felony. Police promise it will prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Roberts for one, says she's glad police are giving this matter attention."Police are taking this serious and we are too as homeowners," she said. She says there are a lot of people in the township who take home security very seriously, meaning what is intended to be a prank can go wrong quickly."We can't all keep donating to GoFundMe's when these young people aren't handling their business - you are going to kick in the wrong door," she said. Police do have video of the suspects and now neighbors are becoming more aware. "You're on Ring cameras, it's not hard to figure it out," she said. The hope is the suspects themselves will realize the gravity of the situation and turn themselves in. "We have to find something more productive," Roberts said. "We played games as kids but we didn't put our lives in danger like that." The Source Information from the Van Buren Township police and an interview with a resident contributed to this report.
