James Van Der Beek cast in 'Legally Blonde' prequel 'Elle'

James Van Der Beek is joining the cast of the upcoming " Legally Blonde" prequel " Elle." The " Dawson's Creek" actor's new role in the highly anticipated series was announced Thursday. According to Amazon, he will be playing the city's new mayoral candidate and current school district superintendent, Dean Wilson. Van Der Beek, 48, took to Instagram to share his excitement over the news. "So, this is exciting… I'm going back to work for a bit," he captioned a post. "Super excited to join this awesome cast in such a fun project." He added, "Almost as excited as my wife and girls are that I'm doing this 😍." The new role comes months after Van Der Beek announced he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer. The actor first shared news of his diagnosis on Instagram in November. Van Der Beek said at the time that he first received the diagnosis in August 2023, adding that he was getting treatment and focusing on his health. "I was honestly in shock," Van Der Beek recalled to "GMA" in December last year, speaking about his diagnosis. "I was doing what I thought I needed to do by getting a colonoscopy, which obviously, I did need to do." "I was in amazing cardiovascular shape. I was eating what I thought was healthy, and I had a whole agenda for what I thought my year would be and what I thought my priorities would be in the next couple of weeks and months," he continued. "And the reality that all of that was going to change and take a different trajectory -- it felt like a nightmare, honestly, at first, that I couldn't quite wake up from. And yeah, it's a lot." Van Der Beek will star in "Elle" alongside Lexi Minetree, June Diane Raphael, Tom Everett Scott, Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney and Zac Looker. The upcoming prequel will follow Elle Woods (Minetree) in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first "Legally Blonde" film, according to a logline. Laura Kittrell is the co-showrunner and executive producer on the series alongside Caroline Dries.

James Van Der Beek Recalls the Specific Moment When He Realized 'Dawson's Creek' Was Going to Change His Life: 'Whoa'

James Van Der Beek took a stroll down memory lane. On Saturday, April 5, the actor, 48, reunited with Kerr Smith for a Dawson's Creek panel at Steel City Con in Pittsburgh, where they shared memories from their time on the set of the beloved '90s show. At one point, Van Der Beek recalled the exact moment when he realized that Dawson's Creek was going to change his career — and life — forever. "I made a movie when I was 17, and everybody said, 'Are you ready for this to change your life?' And I was like, 'Oh, yeah!' I remember going to that movie with my college friends, and there was only one other person in the theater," he said. "I was like, 'I don't think this is going to change my life.' And it didn't at all." "So when I was in Dawson's Creek, we were in North Carolina — we were far, far, far from Hollywood, we were on the WB Network, which, at the time, was a network that I didn't even get on my closed-circuit cable in my dorm room — so some people were saying, 'Are you ready for this to change your life?' [I was] like, 'I've been down this road before. This is not going to change anything.' And they said, 'Oh no, they're buying billboards,' and I said, 'Whatever,' " Van Der Beek continued. "And then they flew me to L.A., and I saw a billboard with my face, like, blown up a thousand times bigger than my head already is, and I saw my name on the billboard." "It was just hilarious to me because I've had to type my name my whole life, like, shift, capital J, space, shift, capital V, space, shift, so the fact that somebody else had to press that shift button four times was the most hilarious thing," he added. "It struck me as so funny, and I started laughing." "Two weeks in, I was doing an appearance in Seattle, and they said, 'There are going to be 100 people here.' And I said, 'There are not going to be 100 people.' And there were, like, 500, and they were screaming, and I was like, 'Whoa, this thing is going to be way bigger than I ever thought it was going to be.' " Smith, 53, for his part, recalled, "For me, because I got there a little later, the beginning of season two, I remember it was my first week and Joshua [Jackson] said to me, he goes, this was after everything that James had experienced, and he said, 'Are you ready for your life to change?' I go, 'What do you mean?' He goes, 'We are a h-i-i-it.' And sure enough, he was right." Added the actor: "It was a life-changing experience." Dawson's Creek ran from 1998 to 2003 and followed the lives of Van Der Beek's Dawson, Katie Holmes' Joey Potter, Joshua Jackson's Pacey Witter and Michelle Williams' Jen Lindley. Smith and costar Meredith Monroe joined the series in season 2 as new students Jack and Andie McPhee. Dawson and Jack first butted heads, after Jack took interest in Joey after she and Dawson broke up. But he later came out as gay, which strengthened his friendships with Dawson and Jen, among others. It was a groundbreaking moment for TV, making him just the second openly gay character on a teen network drama after Rickie on 1994's My So-Called Life. James Van Der Beek is in 'healing phase' of cancer battle

James Van Der Beek explained this week that he is now in the "healing phase" of his cancer battle. "I feel like I can see the finish line," he told "Extra" after being revealed as the Griffin on "The Masked Singer" on Wednesday. "I'm in a healing phase, which is great. I'm going back to work next month. I'm taking this month really to just kind of relax." The actor told "Extra" that he appreciated being able to wear the mask on the show. "Especially with everything I was going through, and I just announced the health issues I was dealing with, so to be able to put on the mask and connect with an audience without that being a part of the equation was actually a really beautiful thing," he explained. The "Dawson's Creek" star revealed last November that he was undergoing treatment for colorectal cancer, and earlier this month, as he turned 48, he talked about the "hardest year" of his life. "When I was younger, I used to define myself as an actor, which was never all that fulfilling, and then I became a husband… it was much better and then I became a father… that was the ultimate," he said to his 1.6 million followers on Instagram on March 8. Van Der Beek shares six children with his wife, Kimberly: Olivia, 14; Joshua, 13; Annabel, 11; Emilia, 8; Gwendolyn, 6; and Jeremiah, 2. "I feel like I can see the finish line. I 'm in a healing phase, which is great. I'm going back to work next month. I'm taking this month really to just kind of relax." The father-of-six pointed out that during his cancer battle he was forced to "look my own mortality in the eye." "I had to come nose to nose with death," he remarked. "And all those definitions that I cared so deeply about were stripped from me." "I was away for treatment, so I could no longer be a husband who was helpful to my wife," Van Der Beek continued. "I could no longer be a father who could pick up his kids and put them to bed and be there for them. I could not be a provider because I wasn't working." During his cancer journey, the actor admitted he began to question if he was "just a too-skinny, weak guy, alone in an apartment with cancer… what am I?" The "Varsity Blues" star said at that moment he leaned on his faith. "I am worthy of God's love simply because I exist," Van der Beek shared. "And if I'm worthy of God's love, shouldn't I also be worthy of my own?" "As I move through this healing portal toward recovery," Van Der Beek said, "I wanted to share that with you because that revelation that came to me was in no small part to all the prayers and the love that had been directed toward me." He went on to say, "I certainly don't claim to know what God is or explain God, my efforts to connect to God are an ongoing process that is a constant unfolding mystery to me. "But, if it's a trigger that feels too religious, you can take the word God out in your mind and it can simply be 'I am worthy of love.' Because you are."

James Van Der Beek opens up about stage 3 cancer battle and staying optimistic: "I'm feeling good"

James Van Der Beek has opened up about his battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer, sharing his journey with honesty and hope. The Dawson's Creek star, 48, first revealed his diagnosis in November 2024, expressing gratitude for his family's support as he undergoes treatment. 'Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis. And I'm one of them,' Van Der Beek shared in an Instagram post, assuring fans that he was 'in a good place and feeling strong.' Recalling his initial diagnosis, he explained that a routine colonoscopy in the summer of 2023 led to the discovery. 'As I was coming out of the haze, the gastroenterologist said in his most pleasant bedside manner, 'It is cancer,'' he said, admitting he was in shock. Despite the challenges, Van Der Beek has remained resilient. 'I really didn't feel like this was gonna end me,' he shared. 'This is gonna be the biggest life redirect. I'm gonna make changes that I never would have made otherwise.' His wife, Kimberly, has been his rock throughout the journey. 'I'm more grateful than ever to my superhuman wife who has shown up on levels I never knew possible,' he wrote in a heartfelt Instagram tribute. The couple, who married in 2010, share six children, all of whom have shown unwavering support. Photo: Instagram Van Der Beek also used his journey to raise awareness, selling limited editions of his Varsity Blues jersey to support families affected by cancer. He also participated in The Real Full Monty to encourage early testing and research funding. Looking ahead, he remains cautiously optimistic. 'When I've been out of the woods completely for what feels like a responsible amount of time, I'll circle back and let you know,' he said. 'I have a lot to live for.'
