‘AR Rahman will get a song out of you at 3 am,' says Sukhwinder Singh: ‘He shines like the moon'
As a composer, AR Rahman is one of the most important figures of the Indian music industry, and singer Sukhwinder Singh, who has sung several of Rahman's songs, is right up there with him. In a recent interview, Sukhwinder talked about his relationship with Rahman and commented on the several idiosyncrasies the composer is famous for, like making music in the middle of the night. During an episode of Mashable India's Bombay Journey, Sukhwinder shared his opinion on the Roja composer and revealed that the introverted genius is actually quite a hoot with the right company, and according to Sukhwinder, he is the right company. He said, 'I was the one who started making Rahman laugh. He is an introverted person, and he gets joy from his work, but laughing in general is also important. Punjabi jokes are only funny in Punjabi, and trying to translate that to English for him was very difficult. There are some slang words that you can't convert, so I developed a special language for him.' ALSO READ: AR Rahman sang 'Vande Matram' at 2 am, filmmaker recalls wanting to keep it 'romantic': 'I was in tears…vohi recording aaj gaane mein hai' Sukhwinder Singh further shared that he even has a special name for AR Rahman and appreciated Rahman's ability to inspire the singers he is working with. 'When someone gives you a break in films or music, we call him the Godfather. I call Rahman my 'godfriend.' With the kind of lifestyle I had, I used to party at night and then work in the morning. With him, you have to be on the mic at 3 in the night, and somehow he will pull that song from you. Suddenly you feel as energetic as him while recording the song. Right in the middle of the night, he shines like the moon,' said Sukhwinder. Rahman, who is believed to be a very simple man, is often seen rocking many out-of-the-box outfits, including bedazzled suits during live performances. Sukhwinder commented on the same and said, 'He is very fond of clothes, and that too ones with all the strange colours. He will wear them for shows, and the reason why people don't see him like that in general is because by the time he gets ready, it is 12 am in the night and everyone is sleeping.' The duo have collaborated on several iconic songs that have transcended their films and eras, including 'Chaiyya Chaiyya,' 'Ramta Jogi,' 'Ghanan Ghanan,' and of course, 'Jai Ho' from Slumdog Millionaire, which earned AR Rahman Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

AR Rahman sang ‘Vande Matram' at 2 am, filmmaker recalls wanting to keep it ‘romantic': ‘I was in tears…vohi recording aaj gaane mein hai'
AR Rahman's 1997 rendition of 'Vande Matram' remains an iconic track to this day. . In a recent interview, filmmaker Bharat Bala, who directed the music video of the song, revealed that Rahman recorded the track at 2 a.m. He also reminisced about the organic and natural approach they took while filming 'Vande Mataram'. During a conversation with The Lallantop, Bala shared that he wanted the song to have a 'romantic' vibe, instead of purely patriotic. 'I wanted to make an idea called Vande Matram, not just a music video. Worked on it for six months. Uss zamaane mein vo All India Radio mein aata tha, ek puraana sa scratch tha. There was no feeling as such, I wanted to change that. Even though we took the idea of creating that for India, but we wanted to keep it romantic. It should be like a love song, not patriotic or jingoistic. It's a love song for your country, your mother. That's why it's much deeper and stays like that even today,' he said. AR Rahman had made a separate studio to record the track. 'He made a separate studio on the second floor for this project. We were trying but nothing was working out till six months. We used to sleep on the floor in his studio. He suddenly woke up at 2 am. He makes everything spiritual. He lit a candle that comes from Ajmer dargah and woke me up. He asked me to call the sound engineer, but there was no one,' he shared. 'He asked me to sit with him and work on the song. I didn't want to take responsibility of the recording in those 15 minutes. But, nobody was there, it was quiet, everything started moving. He went in the recording studio and started singing 'Maa Tujhe Salaam'. That emotion…I was in tears! Merko nahi pata kya hua, he finished singing. That is the very recording jo uss gaane mein hai. We didn't refine it,' he revealed. The filmmaker continued, 'There wasn't any storyboarding or planning. I was clear about one thing, I will film with real people, there will be flags and people of every village and landscape will be filmed artistically. We identified the location, kahin recce nahi kia tha. It was filmed within 20-25 days, I got the video out in another ten days. Jahan bhi jayenge, ek bada jhanda rakhenge, logon ko ikkattha karenge and we will shoot it. No makeup, no choreography, but it should be epic.'

‘India is eternally grateful': What PM Modi said after visiting Adampur Airbase?
On Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Adampur airbase in Punjab, where he engaged with air force personnel who have been actively involved in the recent conflict with Pakistan. PM Modi said on X, 'Earlier this morning, I went to AFS Adampur and met our brave air warriors and soldiers. It was a very special experience to be with those who epitomise courage, determination and fearlessness. India is eternally grateful to our armed forces for everything they do for our nation' The Prime Minister's visit follows several days of intense conflict between India and Pakistan, triggered by Indian strikes on terror sites in the neighbouring country on 7 May as part of Operation Sindoor. On 10 May, India and Pakistan agreed to cease military actions. However, India has made it clear that it has only paused its operation, and any future measures will depend on Pakistan's behaviour. Chants of Bharat Mata ki Jai and Vande Matram echoed at the Adampur Air base in Punjad as PM Modi interacted with the Air Warriors and other soldiers' days after India launched Operation Sindoor targetting terrorists in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. PM Modi was also briefed by Air Force personnel at the Adampur base, which was one of the key airbases active during Operation Sindoor. On Monday, Air Marshal AK Bharti, Director General of Air Operations, clarified that the objective of Operation Sindoor was to target terrorists specifically, and not to engage with the Pakistan military or civilians. Air Marshal Bharti emphasised that the Indian Armed Forces executed precise strikes on terrorist infrastructure across multiple locations, achieving all designated objectives with accuracy. He stated that the operation was not intended to 'body bags' but to neutralise terrorist threats effectively. Regarding aerial combat, Air Marshal Bharti confirmed that several Pakistani aircraft were downed during the operation, although exact numbers were withheld pending technical verification. He noted that Pakistani planes were prevented from entering Indian airspace, and all Indian pilots involved in the operation have safely returned home. On Monday, PM Modi said the forces had been given full freedom to wipe out terrorists. In his address to the Nation, PM Modi said, 'Every terror organisation now knows 'ki hamari behano, betiyon ke maathe se Sindoor hatane ka anjaam kya hota hai.' PM Modi said Indian Air Force, Army Navy, Border Security Force and India's paramilitary forces are constantly on alert. "After the surgical strike and air strike, now Operation Sindoor is India's policy against terrorism. Operation Sindoor has carved out a new benchmark in our fight against terrorism and has set up a new parameter and new normal," he said. Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 to strike multiple terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir in retaliation for a deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22 in which 26 tourists were killed.
