No malice in Adoor Gopalakrishnan's remarks, says Minister Vasavan
Cooperation Minister V.N. Vasavan said that filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan's remarks on the State government's projects to promote filmmakers from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, as well as women filmmakers, at the recent Cinema Conclave should not be interpreted as malicious. The Minister was speaking to the media at the inauguration of a programme at AKG Hospital in Kannur on Monday (August 4). Mr. Vasavan said that the government's scheme aimed at uplifting women and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities would continue as planned. 'The Minister for Culture has already clarified the government's position,' he said, adding that certain comments were being distorted to create unnecessary controversy. Mr. Vasavan alleged that, despite several films from Kerala being deserving of national recognition, the jury had 'insulted the Kerala government' by granting the award to The Kerala Story. Meanwhile, Assembly Speaker A.N. Shamseer criticised Adoor's statement, terming it inappropriate. 'This is a statement that should never have come from someone like Adoor,' Shamseer told the media on the sidelines of an event in Kannur.
