F1 EARTHQUAKE: Max Verstappen's Red Bull Exit Looms with ‘Astronomical' Price Tag as Mercedes Goes All In

Sportsnaut The F1 paddock is abuzz, and not just with the roar of engines at this weekend's British Grand Prix. Whispers have turned into full-blown speculation about a potential blockbuster move that could send shockwaves through the sport: Max Verstappen to Mercedes. Advertisement This isn't just idle chatter, as the discussions picked up steam at the Austrian Grand Prix, with reported concrete talks to bring the reigning World Champion to Mercedes being 'ongoing.' Even Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitted he's in conversations with Verstappen's camp, though he gives it 'very little probability' for 2026, he doesn't rule out a long-term partnership. Also Read:: F1 2025 British Grand Prix: Top 5 Storylines for Silverstone Max Verstappen and His 'Out' at Red Bull Credit: F1 Despite being under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, Verstappen reportedly has an exit clause that could allow him to leave earlier, particularly if his team's performance isn't top-notch. With McLaren currently dominating the 2025 season and Verstappen trailing championship leader Oscar Piastri by a significant 61 points, Red Bull is facing what most observers consider a competitive decline. Adding to the complexity, Red Bull is splitting with power unit supplier Honda next year and will develop its engines in partnership with Ford. At the same time, Honda will supply Aston Martin, a team with which Verstappen was also linked, especially with Adrian Newey now on board. Advertisement Related: Verstappen to Aston Martin? For Mercedes, landing Verstappen would be a massive coup. Martin Brundle suggests that it would not only give them the fastest driver on the grid right now but also leave their rival, Red Bull, in a pretty dire situation. Even Mercedes-Benz Group Chairman Ola Kallenius publicly stated that the best drivers want to drive the best cars and that Max would look good in silver. However, such a move isn't without its challenges. Mercedes has a carefully planned long-term strategy involving their current drivers, George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Bringing in Verstappen could mean sacrificing Russell, despite his strong performance, and pairing Antonelli, their future star, with a driver known as the 'team-mate killer.' Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports Signing Verstappen would also come with an astronomical price tag. He's currently the highest-paid driver on the F1 grid, with a reported salary of $75 million for the 2025 season. Reports indicate that a buyout of his Red Bull contract could cost the team that does it more than $136 million. For Toto Wolff, the high cost might not be a hindrance given his keen interest. Verstappen, on his part, might also be using this Mercedes interest as leverage to push for changes within Red Bull's leadership structure. Regardless of the outcome, the saga highlights that no team can realistically hold on to a driver who wants to leave. Advertisement If Max Verstappen were to bolt Red Bull for either Mercedes or Aston Martin, the impact on the F1 world would be seismic. Perhaps the greatest driver in the history of the sport moving in that direction would demonstrate the power he yields — both economically and competitively — in the sport. How much does it cost to go to the Miami Grand Prix?

The Miami Grand Prix is one of the most expensive to go watch on the F1 calendar - just behind Las Vegas. A ticket to Sunday's race will cost you between £262 (general admission) to £621 (grandstand seating) - although, there are, of course, pricier options. "I have heard that Miami is expensive as a race. But Miami is expensive full stop. As is Las Vegas," said BBC F1 correspondent Andrew Benson. If you'd like a pass for the full three-day package then prices range from £322 up to £1,384. For the Las Vegas Grand Prix, it ranges between £621 and £1,500. McLaren have their own dedicated grandstand this year, a full weekend ticket to join the Papaya fans starts from £617. How to follow Miami Grand Prix on the BBC F1: Chequered Flag Ticket prices depend on the location of your seat. The start/finish grandstand is the most expensive, while the cheapest is the beach grandstand, which offers the best view of the Turn 11 hairpin. Friday tickets are slightly cheaper, fans can watch the first practice and sprint qualifying, with prices ranging from £52 to £97. Saturday features the sprint race and the qualifying session, tickets for those range from £164-£280. If you can afford it, the most desirable three-day paddock (VIP) pass will cost you between £6,720 and £373,344. Other upper-end tickets include the start/finish suites and the Vista at Turn One, with food and drinks included. "Well you are in Miami," is what the BBC Sport F1 commentary team were told last year when they mentioned the cost of meals at a restaurant. A social media post of a menu went viral because the pricing had fans outraged. Miami Grand Prix chief executive Tom Garfinkel defended it. He said: "We're just trying to provide options across that spectrum. "Sometimes people are going to point one thing out and say 'that's really expensive' without providing the context that it's actually a lobster roll for a suite for 10 people. "There are inexpensive options as well as that, which is important to us." The menu was from the Hard Rock Beach Club, where access for a party of 10 cost almost £50,000 with a minimum spend of £22,500. Food prices included £142 for a fruit pot and £209 for a lobster roll, each dish served four people. The exclusive club has trackside viewing, multiple bars, a pool and past performances from big name musicians like Ed Sheeran, Jonas Brothers and Post Malone. Fortunately for fans, there are more modest places to dine, an image shared at a stall showed pizza being sold for around £2.50 and pasta £8. As Miami Grand Prix Approaches, F1 Still Without A New U.S. Media Rights Deal

The Formula 1 global racing series is still seeking a media rights partner starting with the 2026 ... More season. (Photo by Wang Haizhou/Xinhua via Getty Images) Formula 1 has seen incredible growth in the U.S. over the last five years, but the global racing league's desire for a substantial bump in media rights remains in neutral. The 2025 race season ends in Abu Dhabi on December 7, and at that time, ESPN's contract to air Sky Sports broadcasts in the U.S. expires. The deal covering 2022-25 is valued at $75-$90 million annually. Multiple reports have shown that Liberty Media-owned F1 is seeking between $150 and $180 million for its new deal. ESPN has reportedly balked at this price tag, citing viewership numbers that were ostensibly flat in 2024 compared to 2023. ESPN initially picked up rights in 2018 for a slim $4 million after NBC passed on renewing, a sign of just how popular the series has grown since then. For a media rights partner, one of the challenges for viewership is the range of start times, given the global nature of the series. Many see 9 am E.T. Sunday morning starts, with some such as Azerbaijan, at 7 am E.T. Trying to balance leaving the Las Vegas strip open as long as possible to traffic, Liberty, the promoter of the Vegas Grand Prix, had a 1 am E.T. Sunday start for the race the last two seasons, but is moving it to 11 pm E.T. on Saturday in a nod to trying to reach more of a U.S. audience while balancing early morning viewership in Europe. The numbers for not only this weekend's Miami Grand Prix but also the U.S. GPs in Austin, Las Vegas, and Mexico City, where time zones are favorable, will be of big interest. The 2025 season has been highly competitive, which, in theory, should bolster viewership. The big question is, who will win the rights at the end of the season, and for how much? Walt Disney-owned ESPN has been opposing increasing rights fees for some high-profile sports properties. The Worldwide Leader has already said it would need to renegotiate with Major League Baseball, and it appears to be doing so again with Formula 1. The new players in the mix would appear to be the streamers, who have grown interest in live sports content. On the surface, Netflix might seem a good fit, given that the growth in the U.S. for Formula 1 is directly tied to the Drive To Survive docuseries. Pairing live races with DTS seems a logical marriage. However, for Netflix, just how many new subscribers would they pull in airing races? Netflix might view a media rights deal for live races as more about retaining subscribers than pulling in new ones. While Amazon Prime is a possibility given their deal with the NFL for Thursday Night Football, the one streamer that might be the best fit would be Apple. The Apple Originals Films 'F1' movie starring Brad Pitt hits theaters this summer. Formula 1 gave unprecedented access to the grid for the movie, sees Lewis Hamilton as a producer, and sees several current drivers with small roles in it. While it took some time for Apple to viewers to flock to the platform, series such as Ted Lasso, Severance, and Silo, along with feature films such as Martin Scorsese's Killers Of The Flower Moon, show that while Apple's incredible market capitalization of nearly $3 trillion may make Apple TV+ a bit of a toy, it shows that they are calculated and serious about content. While Apple isn't about throwing money away, $150-$180 million annually for a deal ranging from 3 to 5 years could bolster their live sports offerings. Currently, Apple hosts Friday night MLB games and MLS League Pass. Finally, while ESPN has been pushing back on some sports properties as of late, they could still be in play, although that would require F1 to pull back from their target range. That won't come into play unless Formula 1 is still sitting months from now without a deal in place for 2026 and beyond.

Brad Pitt's F1 Movie Has a New Action-Packed Trailer

Ahead of the Super Bowl on Sunday, a new trailer for Brad Pitt's F1 dropped; with only one sentence of dialogue, the commercial focuses solely on the sounds of Formula 1 racing. This trailer provided very little new information, but it did show the crash of Brad Pitt's protagonist, Sonny Hayes, which was filmed at the Las Vegas Grand Prix last fall, and it also gave a closer look at the racing. During one clip, where Hayes is in a fight with his teammate, played by Damson Idris, you can see on the TV screen in the background Max Verstappen leaping from his car in victory. With nine victories last season, one was bound to be included. The trailer ends with one line from the announcer's booth, "Hayes attacks around the outside." While passing in F1 is, albeit at a minimum compared to other series, it feels like a weirdly small racing call to hang the weight of a trailer on, but for all we know, this could be the pass for the lead that gives Hayes the championship or leads to a pivotal crash. After years of production, F1 will be released this summer in theaters on June 27th.
