Henry is king as century maker helps steer Ventnor to victory

AN EXCELLENT Henry Edwards century helped Ventnor remain in second place in the Southern Premier League Division 1 table. Ventnor registered their third win from the opening four fixtures, by beating Hook and Newnham Basics at Steephill yesterday (Saturday). The visitors batted first, with Thomas Southcott leading the Ventnor bowling attack with figures of 3-45. Ventnor bowled Hook out for 259. Henry Edwards celebrates his fine century for Ventnor (Image: Dave Reynolds) Ash Brett hit an unbeaten 88 for Newport (Image: Hugh Griffiths) However, Ventnor started poorly, reeling at 49-5 at one stage. But a superb partnership between Daniel Cox (89) and Edwards (108) ensured a three-wicket victory, with eight balls to spare. The seconds also had a superb day, cruising to a 196-run victory over Hythe and Dibden away, in Hampshire League 2B. Martin Blackman, in great nick already this season, hit 125 in their mammoth 295-8. He was well supported by Toby Noyes, who hit 53. The hosts struggled throughout, with Ventnor's bowling attack looking lethal — spearheaded by Charlie Calloway (5-25), well supported by Aussie paceman Ethan Short (2-13) and Noyes (2-1). However, Ryde went down to their first loss of the season, at home to Havant seconds. Ryde were skittled out for 174, and the visitors wrapped it up for the loss of just three wickets in 27.1 overs. Gareth Bricknell batted well for Newport (Image: Hugh Griffiths) Both Island sides are well placed at the top, with Ventnor second and Ryde dropping down to third. Shanklin and Godshill were suffered a loss for the second weekend running, this time at the hands of Purbrook, by two wickets. The Islanders could only amass a fairly modest 212-5, with Olly Niemiec (69) and Seb Read (45 not out) top scoring. In response, Shanklin were generally quite economic with the ball, but the hosts got home with an over to spare. In the Isle of Wight Senior Cup, Group A, Ryde seconds and Northwood won comfortably. Freshwater were bowled out for 63, with Graham Gosden hitting 40 not out and extras (13) comprising the majority of the total. Ryde lost one wicket to wrap up victory in 7.2 overs. Wight Whizzers put Northwood into bat and restricted them to 211-7, Gary Cooper hitting 53 and Steve Keates 43, while R. Gangather grabbed 3-21. But in reply, the Whizzers top order started well, but could not progress to big scores, and were eventually bowled out for 156. In Group, Newport beat St Helens (156-6) by nine wickets. St Helens opener Marc Allen hit an unbeaten 86, with Newport reaching the run target in 29.3 overs — Ash Brett (88 not out) and Gareth Bricknell (48 not out). And Ventnor thirds beat Shanklin seconds (215-6) by eight wickets. Steve Egerton-Read hit and unbeaten 103 for Shanklin and Mark Price (108 not out) and Souvak Sanyal (62 not out) led the way for Ventnor. In the Fred Winter Cup, Ventnor VI beat Northwood II by 35 runs, and Arreton defeated Shanklin by 20 runs.

Empty beach but booming business in Ventnor for start of Memorial Day weekend

The Brief It's a cool and breezy start to Memorial Day weekend in Ventnor. Few people braved the beach Friday evening. Businesses are off to a good start with crowds due to the weather. VENTNOR, N.J. - The week has been cooler than normal and rainy and not the perfect start to Memorial Day weekend, but conditions are promising to improve, sending many people to the Jersey shore to start their summer. What they're saying "It's very relaxing and you can meditate as you walk," said Henry Lewkowicz. He is getting in his steps taking a three-mile walk on the beach Friday evening in Ventnor. "The weather has been changing. It just rained maybe about 30 to 40 minutes ago. Then it stopped. So, I put this on so I did not soaked," he said. Now it is the wind, cloudy skies and cool temperatures keeping him out of the ocean. "Yesterday there were five fellas surfing over there. It was pretty far out. It was cold," said Lewkowicz. Memorial Day weekend It is not a perfect start to Memorial Day weekend but it is still the unofficial start to summer. Brett Segleman and Abbey Taub plan to make the best of it. "We're going to find a way to enjoy the weekend," said Segelman. He and Abbey Taub were on a romantic beach stroll. They are looking forward to the weather improving over the next few days so they can take a run on the board walk, ride bikes, play pickle ball and hopefully take a dip in the ocean. But not Friday night. "No cold plunge for you? No cold plunge here," said Segelman. A dog and adorable little kid were the only brave ones on the mostly empty beach splashing around. But the ocean is not the only attraction. Shore business is good Businesses like Ventnor Social are busy regardless of the weather. There's live entertainment, an arcade for kids like seven-year-old Nora visiting with family and friends and of course lots of food. "It's always a good time. No matter the weather, it's always a good time," said Marivette Hinds, who is visiting with family and friends. They will be doing a little bit of work and a little bit of play. They have a home in Ventnor. "We plan on fixing up some things around our place to get it ready for the summer," she said. Friday night they are inside but tomorrow they are hoping to really start the holiday and hit the beach. "My son is ready to touch his feet in the sand so I think tomorrow, regardless of the temperature, we're just going to go out there," she said.

Fiery Ventnor bowlers ensure an early trip back home to Island

VENTNOR claimed their second Southern Premier League Division One victory of the season in extraordinary fashion at Old Tauntonians and Romsey on Saturday. The home side batted first, but were unceremoniously demolished by the Ventnor pace duo of Chris Russell and George Watts. Working in tandem, the pair produced inspired spells to rout the hosts for just 41 in just 9.5 overs and 50 minutes. Russell, the former Worcestershire bowler, took 6-15 while Watts claimed 4-18 as the Sports Centre team narrowly avoided an unwanted record. Continuing the theme of the game, Ventnor lost five wickets in pursuit of the meagre target, but with Dineth Thimodya hitting 30 and Josh Carpenter 12 not out, a 20-point victory was secured with the match done and dusted inside 22 overs. Ryde continued their flying start to the Hampshire League season in Division 2B — notching up their third win out of three by beating Lymington seconds in an exciting game across The Solent. Ryde set a below par 219-8 from their 45 overs — opener Ian Hailes top scoring with 55 and Mark Oatley pitching in with 43 not out. In reply, Ryde's bowlers did a fine job of containing Lymington's batsmen, to win by just four runs. Jack Powell blasted 58 for Ventnor seconds. (Image: Dave Reynolds) Meanwhile, their Island rivals, Ventnor seconds, also returned to winning ways, hosting Burridge seconds in a high-scoring contest at Steephill. After Mark Fletcher and Ben Attrill fell cheaply, Martin Blackman played an outstanding innings, underpinned by 15 boundaries and a six, as the home side set a total of 270-7. Blackman's momentum was aided by a 120-run stand with Jack Powell, who scored 58. Ethan Short and Sam Read made early inroads, but Burridge fought back before two crucial wickets saw Ventnor clinch victory by just two runs. Ventnor II's Hugh Calloway took a fine slip catch off Sam Read's bowling (Image: Dave Reynolds) In Division 3B, Shanklin and Godshill were beaten by Gosport Borough seconds at Westhill, losing by 46 runs after being skittled out for 176. In Division 1 of the Island League, Ventnor thirds (191 all out) beat St Helens (184 all out) by seven runs at The Green, with Souvak Sanyal (73) and Gary Legg (62) contributing to the Ventnor total. Defending champions Newport (257-8) beat new team Wight Whizzers (180 all out) by 77 runs at Whitecroft, with Gareth Bricknell (58), Tom Dye (52), and Kev Winchcombe (39) among the runs for Newport. Newport seconds beat Shanklin and Godshill seconds by one wicket, while Ventnor IV beat Arreton by 71 runs.
