Henry is king as century maker helps steer Ventnor to victory
AN EXCELLENT Henry Edwards century helped Ventnor remain in second place in the Southern Premier League Division 1 table. But a superb partnership between Daniel Cox (89) and Edwards (108) ensured a three-wicket victory, with eight balls to spare. The seconds also had a superb day, cruising to a 196-run victory over Hythe and Dibden away, in Hampshire League 2B. Martin Blackman, in great nick already this season, hit 125 in their mammoth 295-8. He was well supported by Toby Noyes, who hit 53. The hosts struggled throughout, with Ventnor's bowling attack looking lethal — spearheaded by Charlie Calloway (5-25), well supported by Aussie paceman Ethan Short (2-13) and Noyes (2-1). However, Ryde went down to their first loss of the season, at home to Havant seconds. Ryde were skittled out for 174, and the visitors wrapped it up for the loss of just three wickets in 27.1 overs. Gareth Bricknell batted well for Newport (Image: Hugh Griffiths) Both Island sides are well placed at the top, with Ventnor second and Ryde dropping down to third. Shanklin and Godshill were suffered a loss for the second weekend running, this time at the hands of Purbrook, by two wickets. The Islanders could only amass a fairly modest 212-5, with Olly Niemiec (69) and Seb Read (45 not out) top scoring. In response, Shanklin were generally quite economic with the ball, but the hosts got home with an over to spare. In the Isle of Wight Senior Cup, Group A, Ryde seconds and Northwood won comfortably. Freshwater were bowled out for 63, with Graham Gosden hitting 40 not out and extras (13) comprising the majority of the total. Ryde lost one wicket to wrap up victory in 7.2 overs. Wight Whizzers put Northwood into bat and restricted them to 211-7, Gary Cooper hitting 53 and Steve Keates 43, while R. Gangather grabbed 3-21. But in reply, the Whizzers top order started well, but could not progress to big scores, and were eventually bowled out for 156. In Group, Newport beat St Helens (156-6) by nine wickets. St Helens opener Marc Allen hit an unbeaten 86, with Newport reaching the run target in 29.3 overs — Ash Brett (88 not out) and Gareth Bricknell (48 not out). And Ventnor thirds beat Shanklin seconds (215-6) by eight wickets. Steve Egerton-Read hit and unbeaten 103 for Shanklin and Mark Price (108 not out) and Souvak Sanyal (62 not out) led the way for Ventnor. In the Fred Winter Cup, Ventnor VI beat Northwood II by 35 runs, and Arreton defeated Shanklin by 20 runs.

Empty beach but booming business in Ventnor for start of Memorial Day weekend
The Brief It's a cool and breezy start to Memorial Day weekend in Ventnor. Few people braved the beach Friday evening. Businesses are off to a good start with crowds due to the weather. VENTNOR, N.J. - The week has been cooler than normal and rainy and not the perfect start to Memorial Day weekend, but conditions are promising to improve, sending many people to the Jersey shore to start their summer. What they're saying "It's very relaxing and you can meditate as you walk," said Henry Lewkowicz. He is getting in his steps taking a three-mile walk on the beach Friday evening in Ventnor. "The weather has been changing. It just rained maybe about 30 to 40 minutes ago. Then it stopped. So, I put this on so I did not soaked," he said. Now it is the wind, cloudy skies and cool temperatures keeping him out of the ocean. "Yesterday there were five fellas surfing over there. It was pretty far out. It was cold," said Lewkowicz. Memorial Day weekend It is not a perfect start to Memorial Day weekend but it is still the unofficial start to summer. Brett Segleman and Abbey Taub plan to make the best of it. "We're going to find a way to enjoy the weekend," said Segelman. He and Abbey Taub were on a romantic beach stroll. They are looking forward to the weather improving over the next few days so they can take a run on the board walk, ride bikes, play pickle ball and hopefully take a dip in the ocean. But not Friday night. "No cold plunge for you? No cold plunge here," said Segelman. A dog and adorable little kid were the only brave ones on the mostly empty beach splashing around. But the ocean is not the only attraction. Shore business is good Businesses like Ventnor Social are busy regardless of the weather. There's live entertainment, an arcade for kids like seven-year-old Nora visiting with family and friends and of course lots of food. "It's always a good time. No matter the weather, it's always a good time," said Marivette Hinds, who is visiting with family and friends. They will be doing a little bit of work and a little bit of play. They have a home in Ventnor. "We plan on fixing up some things around our place to get it ready for the summer," she said. Friday night they are inside but tomorrow they are hoping to really start the holiday and hit the beach. "My son is ready to touch his feet in the sand so I think tomorrow, regardless of the temperature, we're just going to go out there," she said.

Fiery Ventnor bowlers ensure an early trip back home to Island
VENTNOR claimed their second Southern Premier League Division One victory of the season in extraordinary fashion at Old Tauntonians and Romsey on Saturday. The home side batted first, but were unceremoniously demolished by the Ventnor pace duo of Chris Russell and George Watts. Working in tandem, the pair produced inspired spells to rout the hosts for just 41 in just 9.5 overs and 50 minutes. Russell, the former Worcestershire bowler, took 6-15 while Watts claimed 4-18 as the Sports Centre team narrowly avoided an unwanted record. Continuing the theme of the game, Ventnor lost five wickets in pursuit of the meagre target, but with Dineth Thimodya hitting 30 and Josh Carpenter 12 not out, a 20-point victory was secured with the match done and dusted inside 22 overs. Ryde continued their flying start to the Hampshire League season in Division 2B — notching up their third win out of three by beating Lymington seconds in an exciting game across The Solent. Ryde set a below par 219-8 from their 45 overs — opener Ian Hailes top scoring with 55 and Mark Oatley pitching in with 43 not out. In reply, Ryde's bowlers did a fine job of containing Lymington's batsmen, to win by just four runs. Jack Powell blasted 58 for Ventnor seconds. After Mark Fletcher and Ben Attrill fell cheaply, Martin Blackman played an outstanding innings, underpinned by 15 boundaries and a six, as the home side set a total of 270-7. Blackman's momentum was aided by a 120-run stand with Jack Powell, who scored 58. Ethan Short and Sam Read made early inroads, but Burridge fought back before two crucial wickets saw Ventnor clinch victory by just two runs. Mixed fortunes for Island cricket as big scores and bold spells mark weekend
VENTNOR'S promising start to their 175th-anniversary campaign in Division 1 of the Southern Premier Cricket League suffered a setback on Saturday (May 10), as they were beaten by 39 runs at home to Rowledge. Winning the toss, the visitors elected to bat first at Steephill and posted a competitive total of 261 for five from their allotted 50 overs. Ventnor's bowlers toiled hard in warm conditions, with Daniel Cox the pick of the attack. He claimed three crucial wickets for 48 runs from his ten overs to halt Rowledge's momentum. George Watts and Archie Lucy also chipped in with a wicket apiece, but tidy spells from Dineth Thimodya and Hugh Calloway went unrewarded in the wickets column. Sri Lankan all-rounder Dineth Thimodya in action for Ventnor (Image: Dave Reynolds) Chasing 262 for victory, Ventnor got off to a steady start but lost skipper Ben Woodhouse for 22. Once again, it was Thimodya who led from the front with the bat, striking 42 from 49 balls – including three sixes. Cox mirrored his bowling performance with a fluent 42, while Joshua Carpenter top-scored with a patient 43 off 65 deliveries. However, a flurry of middle-order wickets saw the Islanders lose momentum at a crucial stage. Despite contributions from Sam Mills (17) and Devon Pollard (13), Ventnor were eventually bowled out for 222 in their final over. The result leaves Ventnor with six points from the encounter – four for batting and two for bowling – and hungry to bounce back next weekend as their landmark season continues. Ryde continued their bright start in Division 2B of the Hampshire Cricket League with a hard-fought 33-run victory over Winton at Partlands. The home side won the toss and chose to bat first, posting a competitive 245 all out in their 45 overs. Leading the way was Tom Durman, who produced a sparkling innings of 97 from 87 balls — a knock that included 12 fours and three sixes and proved to be the backbone of Ryde's total. Support came from Ashley Goldsmith (29) and Benjamin Shannon (20), while Tom Roscoe chipped in with a quickfire 26. Extras proved valuable again, with 29 gifted runs helping push Ryde to a defendable total. In reply, Winton made steady progress but were gradually pegged back by disciplined bowling. Star of the show with the ball was Durman once more, this time returning remarkable figures of six for 39 from his nine overs. Ashley Goldsmith also claimed a wicket in a lively three-over spell, and the rest of the attack kept things tight to see the visitors dismissed for 212 in 42 overs. The win keeps Ryde's momentum going early in the season, securing them 24 valuable points as they aim for a strong campaign. Ventnor 2nd XI endured a punishing afternoon in Division 2B of the Hampshire Cricket League, falling to a 172-run defeat at the hands of a dominant Portsmouth 2nd XI at the St Helens Ground. Portsmouth won the toss and opted to bat first, making full use of the favourable conditions to post a daunting 333 for four from their 45 overs. Ventnor's bowlers were put to the sword in a relentless display, struggling to make breakthroughs as Portsmouth piled on the runs. In reply, Ventnor's innings never truly got going. Benjamin Attrill offered some early resistance with a fluent 34, supported by Ben Davies who contributed a useful 31 in the middle order. Rafe Hawkins added an unbeaten 18 at the tail, but the Islanders were bowled out for 161 in 39.4 overs. Despite the heavy defeat, Ventnor claimed six points from the match and will be keen to bounce back when they return to Steephill next weekend. Shanklin & Godshill continued their winning start to the Division 3B season with a hard-earned 13-run victory away at Emsworth, thanks to a superb unbeaten century from George Niemiec. Winning the toss and choosing to bat first at Emsworth's Coldharbour Lawn, Shanklin posted a formidable 253 for six from their 45 overs. Niemiec anchored the innings with an outstanding 103 not out from 126 deliveries, stroking 16 boundaries along the way. He was well-supported by Sean Phillips, who hit a brisk 51 not out, and Ben White, who chipped in with a fluent 45. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Shanklin and Godshill's batters maintained momentum, aided by 30 extras conceded by the hosts, including 17 wides. In response, Emsworth fought back strongly but were restricted to 240 for eight in their 45 overs, falling short by 13 runs. Shanklin's bowlers held their nerve under pressure, and some tidy spells at the death ensured the visitors collected 23 points for their efforts. In the Island League Division 1, Northwood (77-1) made light work of Wight Whizzers (76 all out), winning by nine wickets. Simon Goldsmith ripped through the visitors with a brilliant 5-10, well-supported by Shane Keates (2-11). Gary Cooper led the reply with a fluent 45 as Northwood wrapped up the chase in under 15 overs. Meanwhile, Newport were awarded a full 24 points after St Helens conceded their opening fixture. The match was due to be played at The Green but did not go ahead. In Division 2, Arreton (213-7) proved too strong for Shanklin and Godshill thirds (75 all out), winning by 138 runs. Louis Vanassche led with 62, and Tony Blaize blasted 47 not out, backed by 48 extras. Alastair Gates (3-2) and Peter McClelland (3-12) did the damage with the ball. Freshwater (148-4) overcame Ventnor fourths (144-8) to win by six wickets at School Field. Ben Fry stood out with a battling 50 for Ventnor, but Harry Charlesworth (3-13) turned the tide with the ball. Holliday then anchored the chase with 60 as Freshwater secured the points Porchfield (299-3) overwhelmed Newport 2nd XI (147-8) to win by 152 runs in their Fred Winter Cup Group B clash. Marriott was the star, smashing an unbeaten 142 from just 106 deliveries, including 11 fours and six sixes. He was well supported by Billy Clarke (85) and T Wells (41), with the trio taking Porchfield to a formidable total. Newport's chase started poorly, slipping to 10-3, and despite resistance from James Haydon (24) and Paul Attrill (33), they never recovered. Porchfield's bowlers shared the spoils, with Owain Hooper, Toby Corbin, Callum Capon and Drake-Knight each taking two wickets.
