How Noida plans to catch the rain

1 2 3 Noida: District magistrate Manish Kumar Verma held a meeting with stakeholders on Monday and directed officials to ensure maximum rainwater conservation during the coming monsoon and to prioritise the Catch the Rain campaign under the Jal Shakti Mission. The DM directed officials to install rooftop rainwater harvesting systems on all govt and semi-govt buildings. He also emphasised the need to renovate and reuse traditional waterbodies, recharge borewells, develop watersheds, intensify tree plantation, rejuvenate small rivers, and other water conservation-related activities relevant to the district. Verma further asked the officials to ensure that all obstructions in the path of water flow to Amrit Sarovars are removed. Emphasising the need for effective rainwater harvesting in all parks and public places in urban areas, he added, "Office buildings, primary schools, Anganwadi centres, community health centres, panchayat buildings, and high-rise societies should check if the installed water harvest structures are working properly, and those not yet fitted should complete it. " Minor irrigation department officials were also instructed to coordinate with forest department officials to conduct extensive tree plantation campaigns along ponds and the Hindon river. The DM also stressed the importance of ensuring that information on tree plantations conducted by other departments is fed into the Jal Shakti Abhiyan portal. "Install water treatment plants to purify the dirty water from drains that flow into ponds, to prevent groundwater pollution," Verma told officials at the meeting. Additionally, officials from the education department, groundwater department, and Nehru Yuva Kendra were instructed to promote the 'Catch the Rain' campaign across the district through public awareness programmes, so that water conservation becomes a people's movement. He also said that the related progress should be fed into the Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) portal. Officials were directed to ensure that the progress of completed tasks on the JSA portal is uploaded with personal attention.

Govt May Roll Out Scheme To Address Inflated Water Bills

New Delhi: Delhi govt is likely to roll out a scheme to address the issue of inflated water bills, minister Parvesh Verma said on Monday. "We plan to introduce a bill waiver scheme soon under which all the domestic bills will be addressed and reduced by around 90%. The billing system is going to be restructured. Software for this is being developed and some technical issues are being worked out," he said. Delhi Jal Board (DJB) maintains about 27 lakh registered consumers. Several residents have raised concerns about inaccurate billing. According to an estimate, nearly 16 lakh out of 27 lakh consumers received inflated bills in the last few years. Many stopped paying the bills, reducing the water utility's revenues. In the Oct-Nov 2022 period, over 10,000 complaints were received about faulty water bills on the DJB portal. The previous AAP govt had promised to bring a one-time settlement scheme last year but could not execute it. A senior official said the scheme would be a one-time amnesty. If the person fails to pay even then, they will not get another chance. "Past arrears and late payment surcharge added to the current bills was one of the main reasons for the high bills. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? A one-time settlement scheme is anticipated to not only provide considerable relief to consumers, but also expected to significantly benefit the board, with projected earnings of about Rs 2,500 crore. A key feature of the initiative will be the automatic recalculation of bills, eliminating the need for customers to visit DJB offices for individual bill corrections, said the official. The streamlined process will enhance user convenience and encourage the settlement of outstanding payments, he added. Meanwhile, Verma announced that all unauthorised colonies will have sewer lines by 2027. "DJB is planning a master plan to address the problems of sewerage infrastructure and future needs of the city. A global tender will be issued soon," he said. Highlighting details of the projects undertaken in departments under him in the first 100 days of BJP govt, Verma, who also holds the PWD portfolio, said, "We have taken steps to address the waterlogging issue, such as installation of additional pumps at hotspots. About 35% of PWD drains have been desilted. For the remaining work, we have set a deadline of June 15." "Around 15 lakh metric tonnes of silt has been removed from large drains under the control of the irrigation and flood control department," he added. He said Delhi govt is working towards the mission of "one city, one control room, one number" for the monsoon, and a unified control room will be established at New Delhi Municipal Council Command Centre.

Man Beaten To Death Over Suspicion Of Mango Theft In Gujarat, 5 Arrested

Surat: Five persons were arrested on Monday for allegedly beating a farm labourer to death over suspicion of theft of mangoes worth Rs 50,000 from an orchard in Gujarat's Surat district, a police official said. Suresh Verma (48) was brutally assaulted by the five accused, who then dumped his body in a canal on May 21, Bardoli Deputy Superintendent of Police HL Rathod said. "Ashfak Rayan, Vinod Agrawal, Mohammed Umar, Dashrath Maurya and Yakub Abdul Gaffar have been arrested for murder. Ashfaq and others had taken a mango orchard on lease in Akoti village of Bardoli some time back and hired Verma and another villager as labourers. Recently, the accused grew suspicious that Verma had stolen mangoes worth Rs 50,000 from the farm and sold them in the market," Rathod told reporters. "On the night of May 21, they tied Verma to a tree in the farm and thrashed him till he fell unconscious. Later, Ashfaq called Verma's wife on phone and demanded Rs 50,000 for the loss her husband had caused to them by stealing mangoes. On realizing Verma had died due to the beating, the accused transported the body in their car and dumped it in a canal in Kamrej taluka," he said. When Verma did not return home, his family approached Bardoli police and lodged a missing person complaint and also told police about Ashfaq's demand of Rs 50,000, the Deputy SP informed. "An unidentified body was recovered by Kamrej police from the canal. After Verma's family confirmed it was his, a murder case was registered on May 31, leading to the arrest of the five persons," Rathod said

Pakistan espionage case: Thane engineer's police custody extended till June 5

A court on Monday extended till June 5 the police custody of mechanical engineer Ravindra Verma, arrested for alleged spying and sharing sensitive information about warships and submarines to Pakistan after the prosecution submitted that his colleagues need to be questioned. The 27-year-old junior engineer who worked with a defence technology firm was arrested by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) last week. He is a resident of Kalwa in neighbouring Thane. Verma was produced before a court in Thane on Monday at the end of his previous remand. Police requested the extension of Verma's custody explaining to the court the need to conduct a probe at Verma's workplace and question his colleagues. According to police, Verma was lured into passing classified information after being honey-trapped by a Pakistani agent posing as a woman on Facebook. Police had said that Verma shared sensitive information about warships and submarines to the Pakistani intelligence operative through sketches, diagrams and audio notes, and received money from various bank accounts in India and abroad in return. On Monday, defence lawyer Rajhans Girase contended that Verma was implicated and that police didn't possess concrete evidence against him. He claimed that Verma's arrest was illegal as the ATS didn't follow the legal guidelines. The lawyer submitted that the court had not seen any solid proof and that the blue diary recovered from him only contained work-related notes. Regarding the large transactions in his bank account, the defence lawyer stated that ₹2,000 was sent by a girl named Preeti for his niece's expenses. Arguing against the extension of police custody, he submitted that documents had already been recovered from Verma. Verma worked as a junior engineer with a defence technology firm and by virtue of his work, he had access to the Naval Dockyard in south Mumbai. He would also go on board naval ships and submarines, the ATS had said. The ATS suspects that he also shared the names of submarines and warships with the Pakistani agent.
