Juliet & Romeo review: Never was a story more woeful

Juliet & Romeo      Director : Timothy Scott Bogart Cert : 12A Starring : Jamie Ward, Clara Rugaard, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Nicholas Podany, Derek Jacobi, Martina Ortiz Luis, Rupert Graves Running Time : 2 hrs 2 mins It's a small point, but one of the more bizarre oddities – among many – in this hopeless musical variation on Shakespeare 's most kissy play is the stubborn visibility of the actors' breath, even when indoors. The original work is set in balmy Verona towards the end of July. Could someone not have bunged an auld Superser into the shooting space? Jason Isaacs , Rupert Everett and (god bless him) Derek Jacobi deserve better. Anyway, one needs something to divert oneself when sitting through two hours of dreary sub-boyband ballads sung in unending transatlantic warble. What we have here, courtesy of the brothers Timothy Scott Bogart and Evan Kidd Bogart, is the alleged opening third of a trilogy based around 'the real-life [sic] 1301 story that inspired Shakespeare's greatest tale'. Trilogy? No reader of The Irish Times will need to be told that the title characters died at the end of Shakey's version. Are they really going to spend 122 minutes on the first act and a half? Will parts two and three work as prequels? For fear of spoilers, we'll deliver the answer parenthetically at the end of the review. To be fair, the Bogarts – sons of Neil Bogart, late founder of renowned disco label Casablanca Records – are not without ambition. Juliet & Romeo makes some attempt to address Verona's complex relations with Rome in the early 14th century. There is an admirable aside about the pressures then put on the Jewish communities. READ MORE Otherwise the story, delivered in flat modern vernacular, sticks reasonably closely to the familiar text. The Danish actor Clara Rugaard is rather good as Juliet. The Australian Jamie Ward doesn't fall over as Romeo. They become entangled despite being from warring families. They flirt on balconies. 'What's a name, really?' one actually says. [ Dangerous Animals review: Jaws meets Wolf Creek in this watery Ozploitation movie Opens in new window ] The thing is unremittingly dull and bland (not to mention cold, apparently). If it is good for anything it is good for providing deserved paid holidays to venerable older actors and their long johns. Jacobi is a wonder. Not only, at 86, is he leaping around like a young thing, but, in the role of Friar Lawrence, he manages to make the dialogue sound like something other than spiritless pabulum. Whatever they paid him it was not nearly half enough. (Parenthetical spoiler: the lovers don't die at the end any longer. The friar had a plan all along.) In cinemas from Friday, June 11th

Cklamovski says his side gained valuable minutes despite Cape Verde defeat

Tan Cheng Hoe (left) and Peter Cklamovski pose for the cameras after announcing the centralised camp squad at the FAM Headquarters. PETALING JAYA: National football coach Peter Cklamovski (pic) has refused to call the 0-3 defeat to Cape Verde in a closed-door friendly on Tuesday as a failure. After holding Cape Verde 1-1 at the Cheras Football Stadium on May 29, some quarters have come up to say that Harimau Malaya were humbled by the African nation team in their second friendly. Cklamovski explained that it was a training match to provide valuable minutes for several players who have not played for weeks. 'With some of them having gone nearly six weeks without competitive football, this training match served a key purpose – providing minutes across the entire squad to focus on match sharpness, conditioning, and improve physical intensity, said Cklamovski. 'The match was played in 3×30-minute periods to ensure all players saw action – an important part of the national team's build-up to the 2027 Asian Cup third-round qualifier against Vietnam on June 10.' In the closed-door friendly on Tuesday, Cape Verde striker Dailon Livramento, who plies his trade for Serie A club Verona, was the hero, scoring two goals in the 35th and 48th minutes. The other goal was scored by Heriberto Tavares in the 55th minute. Tavares also plays in Europe for Israeli club Maccabi Netanya.

Franchón Crews-Dezurn faces Citlalli Ortiz on Friday in world championship bout

Franchón Crews-Dezurn will defend her WBC super-middleweight title on Friday against Mexican-American challenger Citlalli Ortiz. Crews-Dezurn, 9-2 (2), will be defending her title over ten rounds at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino in Verona, New York, in a bout that will be broadcast live and exclusive on DAZN. The event will take place as part of this weekend's induction at the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2023, Crews-Dezurn made her way to England where she lost a majority decision at the Manchester Arena to Savannah Marshall. After that, she made her way back to the US, where she won the vacant WBC title in December 2023 against Shadasia Green. Catch all the latest boxing action on DAZN Crews-Dezurn's other loss came when making her debut against Claressa Shields in 2016. That fight saw her lose a unanimous decision over four rounds. This weekend's fight marks the first defence of her title. Her opponent, Ortiz, 4-1 (1), last fought in July 2023 when she outpointed Jordanne Garcia in Albuquerque, New Mexico. So far, Ortiz's only loss has been an eight-round split decision against Diana Tapia Castro in their 2022 rematch. A professional since 2021, Ortiz won her first three fights before that loss to Tapia Castro in March 2022. She then fought her most-recent fight, against Garcia, in July 2023. Ortiz's Instagram profile indicates that she was a six-time Mexican national champion during her amateur career, alongside being a seven-time US national champion. She also won medals at the Pan-American and Central American Games and was a world youth champion in 2017. Her amateur record is indicated to have been 27-6 (3). According to the WBC's official rankings, Ortiz is currently ranked eighth within the organisation behind Raquel Miller, Lani Daniels, Shadasia Green, Melinda Watpool, Lina Tejada, Bolatito Oluwole, and Elin Cederroos. Interestingly, neither Crews-Dezurn nor Ortiz are ranked within BoxRec for their weight class due to inactivity. The top-ranked female at super-middleweight, according to the site, is Shadasia Green, 15-1 (11), followed by Hanna Gabriels, 22-2-1 (13); Melinda Watpool, 7-1 (2); Adriana Dos Santos Araujo, 6-3 (1); and Wendy Gcado, 4-1-1 (0). Humble Cape Verde not looking down on Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: It's said that many top footballing nations are reluctant to play lower-ranked sides like Malaysia. Maybe, it doesn't benefit them at all, maybe it doesn't serve any purpose. Maybe they don't want to waste their time on us. But Cape Verde don't mind doing so. Terima kasih. The West African team, ranked 72nd in the world, much higher than any Southeast Asian teams, are in town to play two international friendlies against world No. 131 Malaysia this week. Cape Verde coach Pedro "Bubista" Brito said that his team's objective is to collect meaningful match experience rather than chase world ranking-related results. "It doesn't matter the rankings of the other teams. The more matches you play, the more experience you have. This is what brings us closer to our target, to qualify for the World Cup." This is Cape Verde's first visit to Malaysia, and Brito welcomed the opportunity to be in "a far country" as part of their journey toward global recognition. "It's very important for us to be here so people can know where Cape Verde is," said Brito. An island nation with a population of only 596,000, Cape Verde has produced stars like Logan Costa (playing for La Liga side Villarreal), Dailon Livramento (Serie A club Verona) and Bryan Teixeira (Bundesliga's Magdeburg). Brito made it clear that they are not taking lower-ranked Malaysia lightly. "No, it's never easy. I have all the respect for Malaysia. We are a small country, and this kind of matches are essential for our growth and experience." Brito is counting on their Selangor player, Alvin Fortes, to help them beat Malaysia in tomorrow's international friendly at KLFA Stadium.
