How did Taylor Swift get control of her masters? Here's a timeline The dispute began in 2019 when Scooter Braun bought Big Machine Records, Swift's former label. That deal gave him ownership of the master recordings for her first six albums. The following year, Braun sold the masters to Shamrock Capital, a private equity firm. In 2020, Taylor Swift stated that she attempted to negotiate with Braun but was instructed to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), which she claimed would silence her. Braun later told Variety in 2021 that he offered to sell the masters back, but her team declined. Swift, who signed with Big Machine Records at age 15, began re-recording her albums in November 2020. She released four re-recorded albums: Fearless (Taylor's Version) - 2021 Red (Taylor's Version) - 2021 Speak Now (Taylor's Version) - 2023 1989 (Taylor's Version) - 2023 Before her May 30 announcement, Swift still had two albums left: her 2006 self-titled debut and 2017's Reputation. In her letter, she revealed she has completed rerecording her debut but is only a quarter through Reputation. 'To be perfectly honest, it's the one album in those first six that I thought couldn't be improved upon by redoing it,' Swift wrote, adding that it includes unreleased tracks from original sessions. Swift credited her fans for their support in helping her buy back her music. 'I can't thank you enough for helping to reunite me with this art that I have dedicated my life to, but have never owned until now,' she said. She also hinted that rereleases of her remaining Taylor's Versions could still happen as a celebration. On Instagram, Swift marked the moment by posting four photos surrounded by vinyl editions of her first six albums with the caption, 'You belong with me.'

Taylor Swift Regains Control of Her Music, Reclaiming Back First Six Albums

Swift announced on Friday that she has regained ownership of her master recordings from Shamrock Capital, the private equity firm that purchased them from Scooter Braun's Ithaca Holdings in late 2020. In a message on her website , Swift says: 'All the times I was this close, reaching out for it, only for it to fall through. I almost stopped thinking it could ever happen after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away. But that's all in the past now… I really get to say these words: All of the music I've ever made… now belongs to me. All of my music videos. All the concert films. The album art and photography. The unreleased songs. The memories. The magic. The madness. Every single era. My entire life's work.' In her announcement, Swift expressed gratitude and praised Shamrock for how they handled the deal, noting they understood the deeply personal meaning behind the transaction. 'My memories and my sweat and my handwriting and my decades of dreams,' she writes. 'I am endlessly thankful. My first tattoo might just be a huge shamrock in the middle of my forehead.' Of the pop superstar's purchase, Braun tells Billboard, 'I am happy for her.' The saga of Swift's masters goes back to June 2019, when Ithaca purchased Big Machine Label Group, which owned the master recordings to Swift's first six albums, for an estimated $300 million. Swift's catalog was worth at least half of that amount, according to estimates at the time. Over the years, the megastar has very publicly declared her displeasure with the shuffling around of her masters and, in 2019, began re-recording those Big Machine albums in order to restore control over her songs from a commercial standpoint. Her re-recording journey began with "Fearless (Taylor's Version)" in April 2021, followed by "Red (Taylor's Version)" in November 2021. In 2023, she released "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" and "1989 (Taylor's Version)". Fans are still anticipating the re-recording of her self-titled debut and her final Big Machine LP, "Reputation". Since leaving Big Machine in November 2018, she's released five additional albums on Republic Records: "Lover" (2019), "Folkore" (2020), "Evermore" (2020), "Midnights" (2022) and "The Tortured Poets Department"(2024). She also embarked upon and completed her career-defining Eras Tour, which rewrote the rules of what a concert tour could be, and massively boosted streams and sales of her entire catalog, including the re-recordings. Swift was not involved in Shamrock's 2020 purchase of her music. 'This was the second time my music had been sold without my knowledge,' she said at the time. Shamrock's 2020 statement about acquiring Swift's catalog from Ithaca emphasized their admiration for her artistry and the value of her music. They described Swift as a 'transcendent artist' with a 'timeless catalog' and said their investment was driven by belief in the long-term potential of her work. While they had hoped to partner with her directly, they acknowledged and respected her decision not to be involved. Shamrock expressed appreciation for Swift's professionalism and conveyed interest in collaborating with her in the future. Although terms of the deal were not disclosed, given that sources close to the negotiations say Swift paid a price close to the $360-million price tag Shamrock paid back in 2021, that would imply Shamrock did not make much, if any, profit off the sale of the assets. However, the financial firm with ties to Disney still made a profit of around $100 million in total over the three plus years it owned the records. The six albums and two live albums that Swift recorded when she was signed to Big Machine generated roughly $60 million a year on average globally from 2022 to 2024, according to Billboard's estimates based on Luminate data. Distribution, marketing and royalty payments to Swift likely consumed about 50% of that revenue, leaving Shamrock with an annual profit of around $30 million a year. In 2023, Billboard reported that the re-recordings of Swift's albums "Fearless (Taylor's Version)" and "Red (Taylor's Version)" were vastly out-streaming their originals since the new versions were released, with the new "Fearless" earning three times the equivalent album units as the original, and the new "Red" as much as 10 times the original. As of May 22 according to Luminate, "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" has racked up 2.3 million equivalent album units to the original's 8.6 million U.S. units, despite the latter having a more than 12 year head start; "Red (Taylor's Version)" has accumulated 5.18 million equivalent album units to the original's 9.16 million U.S. units, despite the latter having been released nearly 10 years prior to the re-recording; "Fearless (Taylor's Version)" has accrued 3.0 million equivalent album units to the original's 11.7 million U.S. units, the latter having had a 13-year head start; and "1989 (Taylor's Version)" has earned 4.87 million equivalent album units to the original's 14.6 million, with a nine year gap in release dates. Overall, Swift's catalog has racked up 116.77 million equivalent album units in the United States over the years, according to Luminate, stretching back to her self-titled debut album in 2006. She has sold 54 million albums in the U.S. and generated 70.746 billion streams. Global Times: China, ASEAN, GCC seek enhanced inter-regional cooperation
BEIJING, May 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Tuesday called on China, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to jointly forge an example in openness, development cooperation and cross-civilization integration, the Xinhua News Agency reported on Tuesday. He made the remarks when addressing the inaugural ASEAN-China-GCC summit held in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. Li called on the three sides to create a model of cross-region openness, noting that the population and economic aggregate of China as well as countries of the ASEAN and the GCC account for approximately one quarter of the world's total, according to Xinhua. China and the ASEAN have fully completed the negotiations on the upgrade of the Version 3.0 China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, Li noted, adding that it is expected that an early completion of talks on the free trade area agreement between the GCC and various parties can be done so as to elevate trilateral trade levels. He urged the three sides to unswervingly expand regional opening-up, and build the related regions into a large shared market where resources, technologies and talents flow more efficiently, and trade and investment enjoy greater freedom and convenience, so as to fully unleash the powerful effect of open development, per Xinhua. China, he said, is ready to deepen strategic alignment with the ASEAN and the GCC on the basis of mutual respect and equal treatment, enhance coordination of macroeconomic policies and strengthen collaboration in industrial specialization. "We should strive to turn our own strengths into those of everyone, and at the same time help each other tackle new challenges emerging in development, create new ways of international industrial economic cooperation, and promote a coordinated development in which their abilities can be fully explored, and benefits can be doubled and shared," he said. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his opening remarks, said the inaugural summit would open up a new chapter of dialogue and cooperation, per The Washington Post. The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the GCC and China collectively boast a combined GDP of nearly $25 billion and a market of over two billion people, offering vast opportunities to synergize their markets and promote cross-regional investment, Anwar said. "I am confident that ASEAN, the GCC and China can draw upon our unique attributes and shape a future that is more connected, more resilient, and more prosperous," he noted, the report said. Addressing the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit in Kuala Lumpur on May 27, according to the VNA, Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said the country pledges to uphold its role as a reliable bridge and responsible partner, ready to accompany and contribute to peace, stability, and shared prosperity for all people and nations of ASEAN, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and China. He proposed establishing a robust financial connectivity network among major centers such as Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Shanghai, Dubai, and Riyadh to create a seamless inter-regional financial ecosystem, which he said will propel ASEAN-GCC-China cooperation to new heights. ASEAN and GCC leaders attending the summit spoke highly of the important role stronger trilateral cooperation plays in advancing their respective development and promoting regional peace and prosperity, according to Xinhua. They said that the summit has opened a new chapter for the three sides to jointly address challenges and pursue development. The leaders pledged to further deepen Belt and Road cooperation, enhance cooperation in such areas as connectivity, economy and trade, industrial and supply chains, agriculture, energy, finance and the digital economy. They also pledged to strengthen mutual learning among civilizations, carry out closer multilateral cooperation, and advance trilateral integration for strong, inclusive, and sustainable development, contributing to the building of a community with a shared future. Unity vs isolationism The inaugural trilateral summit "marks a new chapter of strategic cooperation," said the Malaysian Prime Minister. He also highlighted the GCC's remarkable transformation, describing it as "the most peaceful and fastest-growing economy in the world," driven by new technology and artificial intelligence, per the report. "This is a meeting of minds, people who want to develop their countries, who believe in independence, in rights, in democracy and who want to enhance trade, increase investments," he said, according to Malaymail. With substantial shares of global GDP and population, the three parties of the summit represent major Global South stakeholders and can align positions to reform international trade rules and amplify developing nations' voice on the global stage, Chen added. "China, as well as ASEAN and GCC countries, all share common aspirations in development and global challenges. It therefore makes good sense for us to work more closely than before in multiple sectors," Bunn Nagara, director and senior fellow at the Belt and Road Initiative Caucus for Asia-Pacific, an independent think tank based in Kuala Lumpur, told Xinhua in a recent interview. Energy, food security and supply chain resilience offer the greatest potential for trilateral cooperation, Nagara said. The GCC leads in oil and gas, China in renewables and electric vehicles, and ASEAN is a key consumer market and production hub. Cross-civilization integration According to Xinhua, during the summit, the Chinese premier urged the three sides to create a model of cross-civilization integration, noting that the three sides are home to vibrant civilizations and share Asian values of peace, cooperation, openness and inclusiveness. He called for deeper cultural and people-to-people exchanges and a stronger foundation of mutual trust, and called on the three sides to effectively manage differences through mutual understanding, foster mutually beneficial cooperation through the exchange of ideas and explore a new path for the inclusive advancement of diverse civilizations. The Chinese side, he said, actively supports the initiative of Confucian-Islamic civilizational dialogue proposed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, per Xinhua. China is ready to work with the ASEAN and the GCC to implement the Global Civilization Initiative, promote mutual learning among civilizations and build greater consensus and momentum for peace and development, Li added. Premier Li on Tuesday met with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of the trilateral summit. Li said that China is ready to work with Cambodia to promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation to further expand economic and trade cooperation, according to Xinhua. China is willing to work with Cambodia to accelerate the synergy between high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and Cambodia's Pentagonal Strategy, speed up the implementation of the cooperation plans for the Industrial Development Corridor and the Fish and Rice Corridor, and create more new highlights of cooperation and foster new areas for growth, Li noted. On Monday, Li met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, during which he said China is ready to work with Malaysia to deepen exchanges and collaboration across various fields, and jointly usher in a new "Golden 50 Years" for bilateral ties guided by the principles of mutual respect and trust, equality and mutual benefit for win-win outcomes. China, Li said, is also willing to offer greater visa facilitation to ASEAN and GCC countries. Looking globally, the three sides should strengthen communication and coordination under the UN and other multilateral frameworks, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, resolutely oppose hegemonism and power politics, and push for a more just and equitable global governance, Li said. ASEAN and GCC leaders attending the summit spoke highly of the important role stronger trilateral cooperation plays in advancing their respective development and promoting regional peace and prosperity. They said that the summit has opened a new chapter for the three sides to jointly address challenges and pursue development. The leaders pledged to further deepen Belt and Road cooperation, enhance cooperation in such areas as connectivity, economy and trade, industrial and supply chains, agriculture, energy, finance and the digital economy. They also pledged to strengthen mutual learning among civilizations, carry out closer multilateral cooperation, and advance trilateral integration for strong, inclusive, and sustainable development, contributing to the building of a community with a shared future. The meeting adopted the joint statement of the ASEAN-China-GCC Summit.
