Match report: Watford 2-1 Queens Park Rangers

Luca Kjerrumgaard's brace was enough to earn Watford a 2-1 win, their first of the season, against QPR Vicarage Road. Having sprung a surprise by leaving out Kwadwo Baah and selecting a 3-5-2 shape, Paulo Pezzolano's side were on the front foot from the off and did the damage in the first half. Kjerrumgaard concerted the excellent Nestory Irankunda's cross to open the scoring on 20 minutes before adding another three minutes later from Imran Louza's delivery. Kieran Morgan pulled a goal back before the break, causing a few second-half jitters, particularly when Imran Louza was sent off in added time. After defending one final corner, though, the hosts held on to collect three points. Watford started the game quickly, Kjerrumgaard heading over and Kayembe forcing a save from 20 yards within five minutes of kick off. The system was causing QPR lots of problems, with Irankunda enjoying the freedom of a central role as Watford created space all over the pitch. The Australian did brilliantly to win a header and tee up Edo Kayembe for a long-range shot that swerved wide but it wasn't long until he produced his first assist for the club. Kayembe clipped the ball into space down the left channel and Irankunda was onto it, racing away from the QPR defence and squaring for Kjerrumgaard to tap home on 20 minutes. Three minutes later, it was two. Irankunda drove Watford up the pitch again and the ball was eventually worked to Louza on the right side of the area, the Moroccan picking out Kjerrumgaard at the back post to head in his second. Imran Louza on the ball (Image: Alan Cozzi/Watford FC) Marc Bola cleared a Sam Field header off the line at the other end but Pezzolano's side continued to enjoy themselves, Louza leading a 4-v-2 break before misplacing his pass and Ngakia firing over from close range after being found by Kayembe. Just as they looked set to be able to pat themselves on the backs after solid first half, however, Morgan crashed in a fine strike from the edge of the box to make things nervy. The second half did not generate the same momentum, with QPR fractionally on top as the game went scrappy. Sam Field headed wide and Rayan Kolli mishit a volley for the visitors, while Pezzolano brought Baah off the bench on 55 minutes. The introduction of Richard Kone as a substitute brought more life to the visitors and the striker soon had a header cleared off the line by Bola. At the other end, Baah went close with two 83rd-minute shots as the Hornets closed in on a first win of the season. QPR continued to push and Louza was sent off in added time as a high boot was punished. The Hornets held on without him, though, to scenes of celebration at Vicarage Road. Watford: Selvik; Abankwah, Keben, Kyprianou; Ngakia, Sissoko, Louza, Kayembe, Bola (Andrews, 74); Kjerrumgaard (Doumbia, 74), Irankunda (Baah, 55) Unused subs: Baxter, Alleyne, Dele-Bashiru, Ince, Vata, Semedo

Five talking points after Watford knocked out of Carabao Cup

Watford's involvement in the Carabao Cup is over at the first hurdle after they were beaten 2-1 by Norwich City's in Paulo Pezzolano's first competitive game at Vicarage Road. Josh Sargent and Marcelino Nunez were the beneficiaries of poor defending and an Egil Selvik howler in the first half but the visitors could easily have been further ahead at the break. Second-half substitute Kwadwo Baah gave the Hornets hope of turning the game around, but they were unable to score a second despite their threat level improving. Here are five talking points we've picked out from tonight's game. You can tell us what you think by using the comments facility on this page. From bad to better but not good enough Watford were fortunate to still be in the tie after a dreadful first half in which they conceded twice, could easily have been further behind and produced a 45-minute display in which so much was fundamentally wrong. They improved after the break – they simply had to – and got back into the tie when Baah scored midway through the half but were unable to find an equaliser. What was your view of Watford's display over the full 90 minutes? First-half nightmare Being 2-0 down at half-time in your first game of the season is bad enough, but it was the manner of the performance that was much more concerning because there was so much fundamentally wrong. Watford were unable to retain possession, were devoid of ideas when they did have the ball and had the appearance of a team with little conviction in how it should be going about its task in general. How concerned were you by the display in the opening 45 minutes? Adding some bite It was perhaps surprising that Pezzolano didn't act sooner but the head coach did make a triple change at the start of the second half – and switched to a back three. Although it did not lead to an immediate improvement in the scoreline, the substitutions did add some bite to a performance that had been lacking that trait beforehand. How did you assess the impact of Watford's second-half substitutes? Impact off the bench It was to be the fourth change that Pezzolano made that had the most decisive impact and gave Watford hope. It was trademark stuff from Baah, attacking Kellen Fisher with pace and power before driving a shot through Daniel Grimshaw to score his side's first goal of the season. How did you view Baah's display? Encouraging first start It will inevitably take some of Watford's crop of new signings to settle quicker than others but the signs are Nestory Irankunda is wasting no time taking to his new life in England. Having made his debut off the bench at Charlton on Saturday, the Australian caught the eye within a minute of kick off, turning out of a tight situation in his own half before showing fine dribbling skills to take on and beat three opponents. He also showed a willingness to shoot when the opportunities arose in what was a positive first start in yellow and red. How did you think Irankunda did on his full debut?

Football club scraps printed matchday programmes

A football club has scrapped its printed matchday programme to focus on digital content due to poor sales. Watford FC said the number of copies sold peaked at 1,045 during the game against rivals Luton Town but dropped as low as 455 for the fixture against Swansea City. In a statement on its website, the Vicarage Road-based side said: "The appetite for a matchday programme is sadly no longer there." It thanked sellers for their work "in all weathers" and added their efforts would be "fully acknowledged and rewarded". a change to English Football League rules meant clubs were no longer obliged to print a programme for every game. Watford Gold, a website dedicated to the club's memorabilia, said the oldest known programme was from a 1907 Fulham match at Cassio Road, though it is unclear when the club began issuing them. The club said: "It is evident as a progressive and forward-thinking club that we need to be agile and keep evolving our output in line with the rapidly changing content consumption habits of our supporters." Future visitors to Vicarage Road will instead find a "bite-size matchday digital digest", activity book for children and A5 squad list. Teamsheets branded with sponsors will be offered to those in hospitality. The club said it could now focus on creating digital content for social media and on stadium screens during matchday.
