Police use water cannon to disperse Cong, NSUI workers march to Vidhan Sabha
'We had put up barricades at the Raja Pul crossing noticing that a procession was on its way. Some of the processionists tried to cross the barricades and in the ensuing scuffle, a few police personnel sustained minor injuries. Finally, we had to use water cannons to disperse them. A few have also been detained and an FIR is being lodged', SP, Patna Central, Diksha, told PTI. The procession commenced from the historical Sadaqat Ashram, the BPCC headquarters, and was stopped at the Raja Pul crossing, barely half a kilometre away, to prevent entry into 'restricted area', a police officer said. Patna, Jul 24 (PTI) Police on Thursday used water cannons to disperse leaders and workers of the Congress, and its students' wing NSUI, who were staging a 'Vidhan Sabha march' to highlight issues including the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. Earlier, state Congress president Rajesh Kumar, who is also a sitting MLA, had spoken to journalists, while marching out of Sadaqat Ashram. He said, 'We are opposing SIR from the House to the streets (sadan se sadak tak). The day before yesterday, the Election Commission wrongly struck off the names of 35 lakh voters. As of now, 98 lakh voters cannot find their names in the electoral rolls. As suspected, the exercise is turning out to be a move to wrongfully disenfranchise people in order to benefit the BJP-led NDA'. He added, 'Besides, there are a number of issues relating to the youth which the NSUI wishes to highlight. These include joblessness, which has been leading to migration on a large scale, and question paper leaks during competitive examinations. We wish to draw the attention of the government to all such issues through the Vidhan Sabha march'. The Congress is the second largest constituent of the INDIA bloc in Bihar, after the RJD, with 19 members in the 243-strong state assembly. The opposition coalition here also includes three Left parties, CPI(ML) Liberation, CPI(M) and CPI. PTI PKD NAC RG This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Prashant Kishor's protest runs into police wall 2 kilometres from Bihar assembly
Three workers of Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party were injured as police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse a protest march outside the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Wednesday. Though Kishor, who was leading a march to the House for the first time since he founded the party in October 2024, was stopped almost two kilometres away from the Vidhan Sabha, he succeeded in making his presence felt, daring police to hit him and saying that officers had no right to use lathi charge on a peaceful demonstration. Slogans of 'Nitish Kumar hosh me aao (Nitish, come to your senses)' and 'Nitish Kumar murdabad (down with Nitish Kumar)' rang loud during the protest before it was dispersed. The week-long monsoon session of Assembly, the last session before 2025 polls, concludes this Friday. Kishor had started the protest march from his Shekhpura house along Bailey Road. The Vidhan Sabha is five kilometres away. He has been demanding that the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government fulfil its promises, such as giving Rs 2 lakh each to 94 lakh poor families, distribution of three decimal land to each Mahadalit family, and completion of the land survey. 'We are only reminding CM of his old promises,' he said. Later, JSP state president Manoj Kumar Bharti led a team to meet state chief secretary Amrit Lal Meena to put forth the party's demands. JSP has set a deadline of a week to implement its promises, failing which the party would resume the protest. Santosh Singh is a Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express since June 2008. UP Cabinet Approves 1% Stamp Duty Exemption For Women On Property Worth Up To Rs 1 Crore
Lucknow: In a landmark Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Lok Bhawan, the Uttar Pradesh government approved several key proposals aimed at boosting women empowerment, youth digital access, infrastructure, and education. The session cleared a total of 37 proposals and announced the commencement of the Vidhan Sabha's Monsoon Session from August 11. One of the most significant decisions made was the expansion of the stamp duty exemption for women property buyers. Previously limited to properties worth Rs 10 lakh, this exemption has now been extended to properties valued up to Rs 1 crore, offering a 1 per cent reduction in stamp duty. This can translate into savings of up to Rs 1 lakh per property registration in the name of women. State Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar said that this move targets middle-class women, helping them become property owners, boosting their confidence, financial independence, and social respect. The policy complements the Mission Shakti initiative and aligns with the Union Government's recent proposal to reduce stamp duty on property deeds, favouring women. In an effort to enhance digital empowerment among the youth, the Cabinet approved distributing feature-rich tablets under the Swami Vivekananda Youth Sashaktikaran Yojana. The tablets, superior to smartphones in screen size, battery life, and multitasking capabilities, will support education, skill development, and job preparedness. The five-year scheme has a budget allocation of Rs 2,000 crore for the financial year 2025-26 and will be fully funded by the state government without any financial burden on the Centre. The government also sanctioned the construction of the Chitrakoot Link Expressway, a Rs 939.67 crore infrastructure project to be executed via the EPC model. The 15.172-kilometre, initially four-lane expressway will connect Bharatkoop in Chitrakoot to Ahmadganj village, linking the Varanasi-Banda National Highway and NH 135 BG. This expressway is expected to improve regional connectivity and boost tourism in Chitrakoot by providing faster, smoother travel for pilgrims and visitors. The project includes a five-year maintenance period post-construction and is anticipated to generate around 38 lakh man-days of employment. To align technical education with industry standards, the Cabinet approved a Rs 6,935.86 crore project in partnership with Tata Technologies Limited (TTL) to upgrade 121 government polytechnic institutes. TTL will invest Rs 6,034.20 crore, while the state government will contribute Rs 1,063.96 crore plus an additional Rs 858.11 crore for infrastructure and facilities. The initiative will establish Tata Technology Excellence Centres to enhance diploma-level education and skill development. The first phase will focus on upgrading 45 polytechnic institutes as a pilot project. The Cabinet announced that the Monsoon Session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature will begin on August 11. This session will comply with constitutional mandates requiring a maximum six-month gap between sessions. The government plans to present bills to replace ordinances issued after the last session and conduct other vital legislative business.
