Four-day Uttar Pradesh legislature session to run till August 14

The Monsoon Session of the Uttar Pradesh legislature will commence on Monday (August 11, 2025), with Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana chairing an all-party meeting on Sunday (August 10, 2025) to seek the cooperation of all political parties. Both Houses — the Vidhan Sabha and the Vidhan Parishad — will sit for four days, till August 14, with some key Bills expected to be tabled. 'We requested for the cooperation of leaders from all the parties during the Assembly session,' Mr. Mahana said. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the Vidhan Sabha premises, where he inaugurated the renovated dome at the entrance of the Vidhan Bhavan, Assembly Room No. 15, and the VVIP dining hall. He also participated in the all-party meeting ahead of the session. The Samajwadi Party (SP), the principal Opposition, said it would raise issues such as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the context of the Bihar polls, the merger of government schools, law and order, and floods. 'We will raise key issues like the SIR, school merger which are fundamental to the survival of democracy and the future of our country,' SP spokesperson Ameeque Jamei said. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said any attempt to portray the SIR as politically motivated was 'misleading and baseless'. 'The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar is a routine, transparent, and constitutionally mandated exercise carried out under the direct supervision of the Election Commission of India. Its objective is simple - to ensure that every eligible voter's name is included, errors are corrected, and duplicate or ineligible entries are removed. This process strengthens democracy and empowers citizens, especially first-time voters. Any attempt to portray this as politically motivated is baseless and misleading,' said Pushkar Mishra, a senior BJP functionary based in Uttar Pradesh.

86,000 engineers, 4,800 doctors and 18,800 MBAs among over 25.68 lakh job seekers in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: More than 25.68 lakh registered job seekers, including over 86,000 engineers, 4,800-plus MBBS doctors and 18,800 MBAs, are eyeing government sector jobs in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, according to official data. The figures were revealed in the Vidhan Sabha during the recent monsoon session, in the state government's reply to a question by senior Congress MLA and former home minister Bala Bachchan. Bachchan had sought from the government details about job-seeking youth across qualifications, ranging from Class X pass-outs to post graduates and professionals. Minister of State for Skill Development and Employment Gautam Tetwal told the House that, as on June 30, 2025, graduates formed the largest group among registered job seekers on the MP Rojgar Portal (8.3 lakh), followed by Class XII pass-outs (6.22 lakh) and post-graduates (2.38 lakh). Government data shows 10.46 lakh aspirants belong to the OBC category, 6.34 lakh to the general category, 4.69 lakh to the SC category and 4.18 lakh to the ST category. OBCs form over half of the state's population, while tribals account for around 22% and SCs about 16%. The minister said the highest number of registrations was in 2023 (33.13 lakh), followed by 31.54 lakh in 2019 and 30.64 lakh in 2022. The number stood at 26.18 lakh in 2024 and 25.68 lakh so far in 2025. Placement figures peaked in 2018-19 with 1.76 lakh offer letters issued, followed by 1.21 lakh in 2021-22 and 78,800 in 2024-25. The lowest was in 2019-20 with just 4,219. Tetwal told reporters that many registered youths are already employed and are seeking better opportunities, which is why the government has shifted from calling them 'unemployed' to 'aspirational, ' the aspirants include highly qualified professionals, including doctors, engineers, and MBAs, are lining up for posts. They included as many as 4811 MBBS doctors, 86,000 engineers and 18,800 MBAs. According to figures shared by the state government during the Vidhan Sabha's recent monsoon session, as many as 80 private engineering colleges and 46 private polytechnics have shut down in Madhya Pradesh over the past decade, possibly due to waning interest among youths in engineering courses. Congress spokesperson Bhupendra Gupta, however, alleged the numbers show 'the grim state of development,' pointing out that highly qualified professionals were among the job seekers. He also questioned why registered applicants fell from 33.13 lakh in 2023 to 25.68 lakh in 2025 despite over 62.75 lakh registrations between 2018 and 2025. According to figures shared by the state government during the Vidhan Sabha's recent monsoon session, as many as 80 private engineering colleges and 46 private polytechnics have shut down in Madhya Pradesh over the past decade, possibly due to waning interest among youths in engineering courses.

Delhi Minister Calls AAP Chief "Dumbest Chief Minister" Over 'Phansi Ghar'

New Delhi: "This Vidhan Sabha can issue a certificate that we have had the most dumb Chief Minister" -- with that cutting remark, Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa sparked a political firestorm in the Delhi Assembly on Wednesday, accusing former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal of distorting history by turning an old service room into a fabricated British-era execution chamber. The structure in question -- called a "Phansi Ghar" or 'Hanging house' on the Delhi assembly premises -- was inaugurated by then AAP government in 2022 at a cost of nearly Rs 1 crore. But this was declared "historically baseless" by the current government, which has now ordered that it be dismantled ahead of the All India Speakers' Conference scheduled later this month. From Gallows to Tiffin Room? The memorial, inaugurated on August 9, 2022, was built to resemble a jail, complete with iron gates, small bricks, and statues of freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev installed inside what was presented as an execution chamber. It also included lift-operated nooses and original prison artefacts. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, however, told the House that the site was never an execution chamber and called the entire project a "gross distortion of history." "This portion of the Assembly was a service staircase used by British officers, mainly for tiffin service. The real site of the Delhi jail was where Maulana Azad Medical College stands today," she said. She called for the removal of all misleading signage referring to the "Phansi Ghar," saying the Assembly's image must not be tarnished before the coming conference. "Man Who Went to Jail Giving History Lessons" Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa went further, saying the former Chief Minister had "insulted national martyrs" by converting a tiffin room into a fake memorial. "Mr Kejriwal has developed such a bad habit of spinning fanciful stories that he called the tiffin room a hanging chamber for martyrs, hurting the patriotic sentiments of this country," Mr Sirsa said. He mocked the structure's design, which featured two lift rooms. "They are claiming that executions were carried out on one side while food came up on the other. What an incredible display of foolishness," he said. Project Cost Questioned "If something cost Rs 10 lakh, they claimed it was over Rs 1 crore. That's their main art. Even if a large party did it, the cost wouldn't go beyond Rs 20 lakh," Mr Sirsa said. Raising suspicions of political motives behind such symbolism, he said: "They brought Tipu Sultan's photo here earlier, there was a motive. Now they say Bhagat Singh dropped a bomb here? There's definitely an agenda." Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra joined in, alleging that the erstwhile AAP government had "tampered with history" for political theatrics. "The martyrdom of martyrs has been insulted. The Kejriwal government spent crores to build fake gallows. This was a staged drama in the name of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru," he said. "This is not just misuse of funds, it's emotional betrayal," he said. AAP Defends Memorial, MLAs Marshalled Out AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha defended the memorial, saying historical records from that period are not always complete. "Many such execution sites were never officially documented. The 1912 map shows this as the only double-storey structure consistent with a hanging chamber... Are we whitewashing British tyranny just to target Kejriwal?" he argued. He urged the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to assess the structure before any final decision is made. As the debate escalated, Speaker Vijender Gupta ordered the marshalling out of Leader of Opposition Atishi and several AAP MLAs from the House. What Next? With the Assembly ordering the removal of the "Phansi Ghar" structure and associated signage, the controversy has opened a deeper conversation about the politics of memory and representation. While the BJP-led government calls it an "insult to martyrs," AAP insists it was a symbolic tribute to India's freedom fighters, albeit in the absence of concrete historical records. As questions arise about the use of public funds, historical authenticity and political showmanship, the episode underscores a larger concern: how history is remembered, who gets to tell it, and whether facts are being shaped to fit narratives, or vice versa. Whether the structure was a tribute, a distortion, or simply political theatre, one thing is clear -- ghosts of the past continue to cast long shadows in Delhi's corridors of power.

Himachal industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan highlights corruption in panchayats of remote, tribal areas

Shimla: Industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan on Wednesday highlighted the massive corruption in village panchayats across the far-flung, hard and tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh, including his own legislative constituency of Shillai in Sirmaur district. "Corruption level is very high in panchayats of far-flung, hard areas and tribal blocks. Whether it is Sangrah, Shillai or Tilordhar in Sirmaur district or Chamba and other hard areas," said Chauhan. He claimed that in his own assembly constituency of Shillai, panchayat pradhans had even engaged in corruption amounting to Rs 90 lakh. Chauhan also pointed out that the blame for corruption was often placed on the panchayat pradhan, but these irregularities could not be executed without the connivance of panchayat employees such as panchayat secretaries, technical assistants, and the block junior engineer. "I also asked rural development minister Anirudh Singh that they should file criminal cases against such panchayat employees for irregularities like other govt employees," he said. The minister reasoned that the technical assistance was actually provided by the technical assistant and the block junior assistant, but they go scot-free. "We should immediately suspend such panchayat employees and thereafter terminate their services and initiate criminal action against them to send across a strong message against corruption," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2 BHK homes starting at ₹ 72.6 Lakh at Mahindra Happinest Tathawade . Chauhan said he had been highlighting these issues even during the previous BJP govt in the state, both inside and outside Vidhan Sabha. Interacting with the mediapersons, he also assured that there would be strict action against the pradhan of Rampur Bharapur panchayat in Paonta Sahib of Sirmaur district, where a case had been highlighted in which the panchayat showed the transportation of tonnes of construction material, including cement, gravel, and sand, on a two-wheeler.
