NCW seeks report from DGP on Dombivli girl's abduction, rape, prostitution

MUMBAI: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo-motu (on its own) cognisance of the alleged abduction, repeated rape and prostitution of a 15-year-old girl from Dombivli. NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has directed Maharashtra's director general of police (DGP) to conduct a thorough investigation into the case and submit a report on the action taken within three days. In a post on X on Tuesday, the NCW said it had directed the DGP to ensure a swift and fair investigation. 'Immediate arrest of the main accused and strict action under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, and other applicable laws is paramount. Victim support and rehabilitation must be ensured,' the post read. The 15-year-old girl was allegedly held captive in a house in a rural area near Dombivli for two months, repeatedly raped, forced to undergo an abortion and also forced into prostitution by a man known to her family, the police said. Four people, including a woman, have been arrested in the case, although the main accused is still at large, the police added. The girl's ordeal came to light after some workers learnt about it and alerted the police. The police then raided the house where the girl was confined and rescued her. According to the police, the girl had walked out of her house after a fight with her mother over her Class 10 exams. The main accused, who knew the girl and her family, then cajoled her into coming with him. He then confined her in a house for two months and sexually assaulted her, following which she became pregnant. The man then took her to another individual for an abortion, after which the girl was kept at a couple's house, where she was forced into prostitution, the police said. A case was registered under sections 137(2) (kidnapping), 65(1) (rape in certain cases), 88 (causing miscarriage), 143 (trafficking of person), 144 (exploitation of trafficked person) of the BNS and relevant sections of the Pocso Act. Four people, including the couple in whose house the girl was held captive, were arrested.

NCW seeks immediate probe into sexual harassment case against DMK youth leader; BJP welcomes move

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of alleged sexual coercion and harassment involving a youth wing office bearer of the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu and urged the state police to ensure prompt action. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar termed the allegations as 'disturbing' and of 'grave nature' in a letter urging the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police to ensure an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation. The statutory body asked the state police to register a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and submit a detailed Action Taken Report along with a copy of the FIR within three days. It also stressed the need to ensure the safety of the survivor, prevent any political interference in the case and form an independent investigation team. The DMK youth wing, led by deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, in a release on Tuesday, said the accused, R Deivaseyal, has been removed from the post of deputy organiser at the Arakkonam Central Union. The BJP slammed the ruling DMK over the case and welcomed the intervention by the NCW. The saffron party and its alliance partner, the AIADMK, have been alleging a lack of women's safety in the state in the run-up to the state assembly election in 2026. Former BJP state president K Annamalai welcomed the NCW for taking up the case and said it is the 'duty of the DMK government to fully cooperate' with the statutory body and 'ensure the safety of women in Tamil Nadu.' In a post on X in Tamil, he also alleged that the state police did not act on her complaint. 'The police, which claims to have registered a case on the 10th itself based on the student's complaint, have not yet arrested the DMK youth wing executive. On the contrary, the student has also alleged that the DMK has published the evidence given to the police on social media,' he alleged. 'This shows that the DMK's despicable actions in attempting to intimidate and release personal information about the student in the case of the Anna University student who was sexually assaulted continue in all sexual crimes committed by the DMK,' he added.
