David Moyes on Everton transfers – Time is ‘running out' to build fans a ‘team to be proud of'

Everton manager David Moyes has warned that time is 'running out' for his club to get signings through the door as he seeks to rebuild his squad to challenge in the Premier League this season. Moyes has made clear over the past week that he wants as many as ten signings this summer having lost senior players such as Dominic Calvert-Lewis, Abdoulaye Doucure, Ashley Young and Jack Harrison, among others, due to the expiry of contracts and the end of loan deals. Advertisement Everton have so far signed young French forward Thierno Barry, 22, from Villarreal, the 19-year-old left back Adam Aznou from Bayern Munich and back-up goalkeeper Mark Travers from Bournemouth, as well as making Carlos Alcaraz a permanent signing after joining on loan from Flamengo last season. The club have an interest in 20-year-old Malick Fofana from Lyon but Moyes has also made clear he wants a mixture of more experienced Premier League-ready players aged 25 or over, as well as youngsters with potential. Moyes told The Athletic in an interview published on Monday that his club had been repeatedly rejected by players who preferred clubs competing in UEFA club competitions next season and the challenge for Everton is made more difficult by the fact nine Premier League clubs will be competing in Europe in the coming campaign. He said on Tuesday he wants to sign players capable of getting Everton in contention to challenge for European places in the coming seasons. During a press conference in Chicago on Tuesday before their Premier League Summer Series game against West Ham, Moyes reiterated that Everton were 'hoping to have done more business' by now and said 'we're just stalling a little bit in some departments.' He said: 'The truth is we are not getting them over the line at the moment, so that's a fact. We're not getting a lot of the deals done that we were hoping to do, we're continually reassessing and moving on if things are not coming to fruition. So we will keep doing it and we'll keep trying to get the best players as we can. We want to challenge ourselves to get good players if that is possible, and we're trying to do that but we're finding it quite difficult.' Asked if he had been surprised by the setbacks, Moyes said: 'My first thought was 'yes, I was surprised' because Everton is such a big club. Great traditions, what the club has stood for over the years, the new stadium is an exciting new move for us. But then you have another thought and you think again — 'we have been around the relegation positions the last five years and not far off the bottom.' Advertisement 'The fact of the matter is we've got to rebuild trust in people who should come to Everton and show that the club is going in the right direction and that we've got a new future. We're all desperate to give the supporters something again. Let's hope we can pull it together for them and get them a team to be proud of by the start of the season.' Moyes continued: 'The one thing I'll do is tell Evertonians immediately when I can give them information. I'm telling them straight at the moment. We are having a bit of a struggle getting ones in quickly enough, but we're trying to do players who could give us a chance of challenging to be one of those teams in Europe.' Asked by The Athletic if the —issue in getting players into the club is external or internal, he said: 'We want to get it done. I don't know if I can answer your question as clearly as that. We're desperate to get everything moving on, we know that time's running out, we've probably had five weeks, six weeks certainly, probably more since the end of last season. We got to start getting moving on because it will not be long till the window starts to get a bit closer to the end.' He added: 'Hopefully things will start to fall into the place. We are just beginning (to think) 'my goodness we are just not getting enough over the line.' We are actively working on it. It's not like we are a club waiting to sell a player in order to bring ones in. We are actually in the market. I would like to say it's a big pot of money because that would be great thing for Everton. But that is not really the situation. What we do have is money to spend but we have to spend it wisely.' Moyes, who declined to comment on reported interest in Manchester City's Jack Grealish, also urged caution about new full-back Aznou. He said: 'This boy's a young boy. Maybe not quite ready yet, but we hope he will be shortly. We see a lot of good things in him, technically very good, he is athletic. He might just need a little bit to get himself built up and ready for the Premier League so. Advertisement 'We won't be putting him under any pressure and we won't be giving any guarantees to the supporters of seeing him right away. 'We will be observing him ourselves. We've heard lots of good things about him – what we've seen we liked.'

Alex Baena and Atletico Madrid duo raise the bar – ‘I'm here to win titles'

It was taken with a pinch of salt when President Enrique Cerezo declared that Atletico Madrid were aiming for titles next season, while manager Diego Simeone is almost obligated to say as much. However the message from the Atletico dressing room has been clear: there is a belief that they can go all the way in one of the three major competitions next season. Making eight signings this summer for a total of €149m not including variables, Atletico have spent big for a second summer in a row, and the scent of ambition is in the air at the Metropolitano. Alex Baena – 'I'm here to win titles' None more expensive than Villarreal playmaker Alex Baena, who was presented on Monday, costing €42m. Cerezo thanked Baena for turning down other others in order to sign for Atletico. 'I've always wanted to come to Atleti: I held out as long as I could to come here. I'm here to show everything I've shown at Villarreal, and I'm here, above all, to win titles,' he told Diario AS. Image via EFE 'We are going to tattoo more than one,' Baena told his new boss, referencing the fact that he has a habit of tattooing every trophy he has won, so far the Europa League, Olympics and Euro 2024. 'We don't lack ambition' – Pablo Barrios Meanwhile midfielder Pablo Barrios, in line to take a prominent role in midfield alongside new signings Johnny Cardoso and Baena, explained to AS that they were desperately trying to avoid a third-place finish. 'It's not just because six [discounting Clement Lenglet and Juan Musso] new signings have arrived. We train every day, not to finish third. No one goes out onto the pitch with the ambition of finishing third; we go out with the ambition of being champions. This year is looking very good; many players have arrived, and I hope it can be so.' With Atletico failing to take the any of the three competitions they were in going into March by the scruff of the neck, and in the case of La Liga, struggling to beat Getafe, Las Palmas and Espanyol, Los Rojiblancos have been accused of settling for third. 'I know a lot of people say that, but it's not true. When we go out to play, we don't have that mindset; we have the mindset of trying to win every game, giving our all, and then it may or may not go well.' 'We have to win titles' – Giuliano Simeone If the messaging was not clear, Cholo Simeone's own son was not afraid of adding pressure for his team and his father. Giuliano Simeone was unequivocal that the entire squad were aiming for trophies. Image via Diario AS 'Everyone, without a doubt. I think we now know what Atletico Madrid is, what we've been doing throughout the process over the years, and now we have to win titles. But I think to achieve that, the essence of the club is to go day by day, to improve in every training session, to go game by game, and to always be able to get the three points.' 'The Champions League. Without a doubt. Absolutely. Without a doubt,' he told Marca, when asked which trophy he would most like to win.

Barcelona Director of Football interested in move for Chelsea man on loan

Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson has had two years of ups and downs at Chelsea since moving from Villarreal. However after bringing in Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, the Senegalese international is now looking for an exit, with a return to La Liga a possibility. After signing for €37m in 2023, Jackson has made 81 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 30 goals and giving 12 assists. Yet his inconsistency in front of goal has led to Chelsea seeking alternative options, and Caught Offside say that they have set the asking price at €50m. Barcelona interested in loan move for Jackson The same outlet go on to explain that Barcelona are interested in a potential loan deal for Jackson, and Director of Football Deco is expected to discuss the matter in the coming days. The Catalan giants would be one of the leading contenders for a loan with an option to buy deal, where he would be an alternative to Robert Lewandowski. Image via Getty Images Interest from Serie A and Premier League For his part, Jackson is set to prefer to remain in the Premier League. Newcastle United could look to him if Alexander Isak moves on, while Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has worked with him in the past. Manchester United are also credited with an interest, although Chelsea are wary of selling to rival teams. A more appealing option for Chelsea could be a move to Serie A, but Jackson has turned down a move to AC Milan. Napoli have shifted their attention elsewhere, and Juventus have enquired about him. The perspective on Barcelona moving for Jackson While Jackson might have been a logical alternative before Marcus Rashford's arrival last week, a move for the 24-year-old seems highly unlikely. Rashford is slated to play off the left, but it solidifies Ferran Torres' role through the middle, and unless Barcelona plan to cash in on Torres – and convince him of a move – a move for Jackson would be a strange use of resources.

Canadian winger Tajon Buchanan completes permanent move to Spain's Villarreal

Social Sharing Canadian international winger Tajon Buchanan made his loan move to Villarreal CF permanent Tuesday, signing a five-year contract with the Spanish club. The 26-year-old from Brampton, Ont., joined Villarreal on Feb. 1 from Italy's Inter Milan on a season-long loan with an option to make the move permanent. Buchanan joined Inter in January 2024 from Belgium's Club Brugge but found playing time hard to get in the star-studded squad with 17 appearances in total. A broken leg suffered in training with Canada at last year's Copa America did not help. Still Buchanan made history as the first Canadian goal-scorer in Serie A when he scored off the bench in May 2024 in a 5-0 win over Frosinone. The permanent move should help Buchanan get playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The elusive winger has already made 13 appearances for Villarreal, scoring one goal and adding two assists. Villarreal, which plays at the 23,00-capacity Estadio de la Ceramica, finished fifth in the 20-team Spanish top tier last season at 20-8-10. "I just really enjoyed my football last season and really felt a part of this team. And I want to be part of it moving forward," said Buchanan. "It's an amazing club," he added. "It's a club that's going back to the Champions League, I think a club that deserves to be playing in the Champions League." Founded in 1923, the team is known as the Yellow Submarine because of its yellow home kit. The Spanish side won the Europa League in May 2021 in dramatic fashion, defeating Manchester United 11-10 in a penalty shootout after the two teams drew 1-1. Fellow Canadian Cyle Larin (Mallorca) also plays his club football in La Liga. Buchanan underwent surgery in July 2024 to repair a fractured tibia, returning to the Canada squad last November for its CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal against Suriname. Analyzing Jesse Marsch's Gold Cup tournament, plus Jonathan David's transfer to Juventus 21 days ago A member of Canada's 2022 World Cup squad, Buchanan has made 51 appearances (including 36 starts) for Canada with eight goals and seven assists. When healthy, he is a key part of Jesse Marsch's squad. Buchanan was taken in the first round (ninth overall) by the New England Revolution in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft. He was runner-up to FC Dallas forward Ricardo Pepi as the 2021 MLS Young Player of the Year after finishing with career highs in games played (27), starts (19), goals (eight), and assists (five) in his third MLS season. Buchanan, named best young player at the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, joined Belgian champion Club Brugge after the 2021 season. He made 50 regular-season appearances for New England with 10 goals and nine assists.
