'One of the best biopics ever' streaming on Prime Video director says is greatest war movie

The acclaimed director was choosing some of his favourite films An Oscar-nominated director has revealed his pick for one of the greatest war films ever produced. Earlier this year, Denis Villeneuve had the opportunity to visit the Criterion Closet and share his favourite films and recommendations with fans. His selection included films that have inspired him as a filmmaker, as well as his favourite works from renowned directors. ‌ Villeneuve is recognised for directing films such as Sicario, Arrival, Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049, and Dune Parts One and Two. His work has earned him numerous Oscar and BAFTA nominations, including a Best Director nod for Arrival, reports the Express. ‌ The Criterion Closet is a physical or sometimes mobile space created for events, housing every title distributed by The Criterion collection. Reportedly home to at least 1,700 films, celebrities are often invited to select their favourites while being filmed. During his visit earlier this year, Villeneuve's picks included The Three Colours trilogy directed by Krzysztof Kielowski, Lars von Trier's Europa, Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai, Satyricon by Fellini, and Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Wages of Fear. The director also expressed his appreciation for documentaries, recommending Le Mystère Picasso from Henri-Georges Clouzot. Additionally, he highlighted a film about a historical figure which, in his opinion, ranks among the best war movies. He remarked: "Che, with the great Benicio del Toro. For me, it's by far one of the best movies about war, about what it is to be a leader of men." ‌ Expanding on his thoughts, he stated: "The research behind this movie is astonishing, and I absolutely adore the directing. I think it's a movie that is underrated. Honestly, it's a masterful work by Soderbergh. My favourite movie from Soderbergh." Intriguingly, he hinted as well at a possible source of inspiration for his own monumental interpretation of the Dune novels when examining the double DVD boxset, noting: "Part one, part two. Maybe there's an influence there. I don't know." The 2008 epic biographical flick Che unfolded the story of Argentine Marxist revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara and came in a nearly five-hour-long two-part format. For those intrigued to delve into what Villeneuve extolled, they will be pleased to find both chapters available for streaming on Prime Video. ‌ Under the directorial prowess of Steven Soderbergh, the film starred Benicio del Toro as Che and strayed from the conventional linear storytelling, instead opting to weave together various segments from Che's life journey. One enthusiast hailed the film, asserting: " One of the best biopics ever. It should have won Oscar." A separate individual praised it further saying: "Gorgeously shot, superbly acted, and poignantly relevant." For those inclined to watch, 'Che Parts One and Two' are streamable now via Prime Video.

Friday on My Mind: A Queen musical, a mini ska fest and a roller-skating bash

Friday on My Mind is a highly subjective, curated rundown of five of the cooler things happening in Montreal on the weekend. We Will Rock You Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at Théâtre St-Denis Steve Bolton is a big Queen fan and apparently he is far from the only Quebecer who really digs this iconic British rock band. We Will Rock You, a brand-new Québécois adaptation of the hit jukebox musical that opened in London's West End in 2002, has already sold more than 25,000 tickets for its Quebec run. It continues at Théâtre St-Denis until May 18 and then moves down the highway to Théâtre Capitole in Quebec City, where it runs from June 20 to July 13. It will also be playing in the fall at Amphithéâtre Cogeco in Trois-Rivières and Théâtre du Casino du Lac-Leamy in Gatineau. Bolton, who is the director of the show, has loved the band fronted by the late Freddie Mercury since he was a kid. 'I'm a classic-rock fan,' said Bolton, who has worked extensively as a choreographer and director, with the Cirque du Soleil and for numerous TV shows, including So You Think You Can Dance Canada. 'So it worked out that I got this opportunity, because I love classic rock. I grew up on Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Zeppelin, Queen, Genesis, you name it. With my dad, when I was growing up, that's all we listened to. Like Chris de Burgh and Gowan. On road trips, it was Pink Floyd.' Annie Villeneuve portrays the Killer Queen in the show, and yes, she does belt out the Queen song that inspired her character's name. She said she's become a Queen fan because of the musical, admitting that she only discovered many of the deep-catalogue Queen tracks when she began working on the project. 'Every song has its own special particularity, often inspired by different musical genres,' said Villeneuve. We Will Rock You features 25 Queen songs, including all of their biggest successes, notably Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody to Love, Another One Bites the Dust, We Are the Champions, Under Pressure and Don't Stop Me Now. Villeneuve's Killer Queen, as the name suggests, is the villain, 'a character who is so far from my own personality,' said Villeneuve. 'She's always raging and is super egotistical. It's really not me. But she's a character that's really fun to play.' It's set in a world where music has been banned but there's a rebel group, the Bohemians, fighting to keep the musical spark alive. 'It's about the quest to not be drowned out by what's artificial,' said Bolton. 'It's to appreciate and not forget our past. It's to not forget music, to not forget things that make us feel.' Roller skating All weekend at Esplanade Tranquille During the winter, ice skating's the thing at Esplanade Tranquille, the cool public space on Clark St. just above Ste-Catherine St. in the Quartier des spectacles. But with the warmer weather, it's time to ditch your ice skates and grab a pair of roller skates. Saturday night at 7, it's Skating Back in the Eras, a roller dance party for skaters of all levels. There will be a performance by the students from the Skate With Marly roller dance school and lots of old-school music. On Sunday at 4 p.m. there will be a roller derby demonstration with the folks from Montréal Roller Derby. On Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m., there will be roller-skating lessons for beginners. Skates will be loaned out for free, but you are encouraged to bring your own protective gear. Centre Greene carnival Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. at Centre Greene The Westmount community centre will be throwing a big 35th birthday bash Saturday, with arts, crafts, face painting, a silent auction, bake sale, line dancing and a Zumba session. Free entry. Puces POP Friday 3 to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Église St-Denis Head down to the church right by the Laurier métro station to check out POP Montreal's coolster artisanal fair and maybe snare your last-minute Mother's Day gifts. There will be booths selling jewelry, ceramics, body-care products, food, clothes and art. Free entrance. Information: The Planet Smashers Saturday at 7 p.m. at Théâtre Beanfield Astonishingly enough, the Planet Smashers have been rocking their high-energy ska thing for over 30 years now. The Montreal band will be headlining a major punky ska bash Saturday at the place I still call the Corona Theatre, with fellow ska disciples Mustard Plug from Grand Rapids, Mich.; Big D and the Kids Table from Boston; and Faintest Idea from the U.K. So yeah, ska is alive and well (and this is a good thing!).

Robert Pattinson Eyed for "Dune: Messiah" Role

Yara Sameh Denis Villeneuve has his sights set on another A-lister to join the starry ensemble cast of 'Dune: Messiah'. As Villeneuve puts the finishing touches on the script for the next 'Dune' entry ahead of a summer shoot, sources say that there's interest in having Robert Pattinson join the project, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. While no offer has been made yet, Pattinson is being eyed for the chief villain role in the film, potentially Scytale from Frank Herbert's books, a Face Dancer of the Bene Tleilax and eventually one of the Masheikh, the ten rulers of the Tleilaxu empire. Pattinson recently co-starred with Zendaya in the A24 film 'The Drama,' and is currently filming Christopher Nolan's adaptation of 'The Odyssey.' He's also the star of Warner Bros.'s 'The Batman,' with a sequel set to open in theaters in 2027. Last year, Legendary confirmed that development on 'Dune 3' was underway following the blockbuster success of 'Dune: Part 2.' The first two films have earned a combined $1.12 billion at the global box office and won eight Oscars from 15 nominations, with both earning best picture nods. Villeneuve's 'Dune' movies have also proven to be a magnet for top talent, including Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Oscar Isaac, Stellan Skarsgard, Léa Seydoux, Charlotte Rampling, Dave Bautista and Christopher Walken. Florence Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy are among the stars expected to return for the third installment, which takes place a dozen years after the events of 'Part 2.' Jason Momoa also recently revealed that he'll reprise his role as Duncan Idaho. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Jason Momoa Sets His Return as Duncan Idaho in ‘Dune 3': ‘I'm Making a Comeback'

As director Denis Villeneuve inches closer to starting production on 'Dune 3,' actor Jason Momoa has made his future with the sci-fi franchise known. During a Monday interview with 'Today', Momoa confirmed that he will be reprising his role as Duncan Idaho in Villeneuve's sequel to 2024's 'Dune: Part Two.' When asked by host Craig Melvin if he's 'gotten a call' about the film, Momoa responded, 'Well, I'm not sure if I'm going to get in trouble or not, but it's the same thing like 'Game of Thrones,' you know what I mean? If you didn't read the books, it's not my fault, right?' 'Yeah, there's going to be… I'm going to be coming back,' he continued. 'I'm making a comeback! You heard it first, right here with you, baby.' Laughing, Momoa added, 'You just got me in trouble!' In 2021's 'Dune: Part One,' Momoa's Duncan, the swordmaster of House Atreides and an influential mentor to Timothée Chalamet's Paul Atreides, willingly sacrifices himself in order to give Paul and his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) enough time to escape a deadly ambush. Duncan dies in a similar fashion in author Frank Herbert's original 'Dune' novel. However, the character is brought back to life in Herbert's third 'Dune' book, 'Dune Messiah,' as a clone-like replica of his original self. 'Messiah' takes place 12 years after 'Dune: Part Two' and it explores the fallout of Paul's bloody rise to ultimate power. Duncan, for his part, goes on to be the only character featured in all six of Herbert's original 'Dune' books. Villeneuve's 'Dune 3,' oft prematurely referred to by fans as 'Dune Messiah,' is expected to be, like its two predecessors, a largely faithful adaptation of its Herbert-penned source material. Momoa's confirmation of his return is not, therefore, a particularly shocking revelation. It is, however, noteworthy that Momoa has chosen to announce his return so early. 'Dune 3' is not expected to begin filming until later this year. It is a move reminiscent of Josh Brolin's insistence that 'Dune: Part Two' be added to his IMDb page shortly after the release of 'Dune: Part One,' despite the fact that the fate of his character, Gurney Halleck, is left purposefully ambiguous at the end of the first film. Villeneuve's 'Dune' movies continue to inspire a level of excitement from their cast members the likes of which is rarely seen these days in Hollywood's expensive franchise world. It is not hard to see why, though, as both 'Dune: Part One' and 'Dune: Part Two' garnered considerable critical praise, financial success and awards recognition following their respective releases. 'Dune 3' is expected to hit theaters in 2026. The post Jason Momoa Sets His Return as Duncan Idaho in 'Dune 3': 'I'm Making a Comeback' | Video appeared first on TheWrap.

Liam Lawson pays price for ‘arrogance' after Red Bull axe, says former F1 champion

Jacques Villeneuve believes Liam Lawson has paid the price for being 'very arrogant' after the New Zealander was dropped by Red Bull following just two races. Lawson, 23, endured a torrid first two races this season, crashing out in Australia and qualifying last on the grid, twice, in China. The Kiwi acknowledged he did 'not have time' on his side as he looked to turn around his form. Yet Red Bull have acted swiftly, dropping Lawson to junior team Racing Bulls and promoting Yuki Tsunoda ahead of his home race in Japan next week. Speaking after news of the shock early-season driver swap, 1997 F1 world champion Villeneuve said: 'You have to bear in mind that he [Lawson] came into F1 very arrogant. 'He came into F1 last year saying how amazing he would be and he had an attitude. When the results don't come, it makes everybody react even stronger. 'It's actually the worst result ever in a Red Bull car. So, he's paying his own price there. He set himself up in a way.' However, Villeneuve did say he thought Red Bull would at least give Lawson the next four races – in Japan, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Miami – to prove his worth. 'When you start with Red Bull you have to be on it right away,' Villeneuve added, in conversation with NZCasino. 'And that's the price to pay for being put in the best team. 'You want to take that risk? Good. But then the opposite side is you'll pay a dear price if it doesn't work out. 'That's just the way it is, and that's OK. That's how it should be. I thought they might give him another three races when they come back to Europe so they could then make a considered decision.'
