92 Mercury Drug stores to accept guarantee letters from AICS, AKAP beneficiaries

Several Mercury Drug stores nationwide will accept guarantee letters (GL) from the beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development's (DSWD) Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) and Ayuda para sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP) starting June 2. According to Isa Avendaño-Umali's report on Super Radyo dzBB on Thursday, 92 branches of the pharmacy brand will recognize the letters issued by the DSWD to help beneficiaries save money in purchasing medicines. The participating outlets will accept GLs issued by the DSWD Central Office and field offices in the National Capital Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Central Visayas, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, SOCSKSARGEN, and Caraga. AICS is targeted to individuals or families who are experiencing crisis, tragedy, or severe poverty. SWS: 87% of Pinoys want new Senate to prioritize education

Eighty-seven percent of Filipinos want the newly composed Senate to prioritize reforms on education in the upcoming 20th Congress, the latest survey by Stratbase and Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed. The survey conducted on May 2-6 asked respondents which issues the upper chamber must prioritize after the midterm elections, which was conducted last May 12. A large number of respondents said that the Senate should definitely prioritize improving accessibility of education by strengthening the public education system, distribution of scholarships, and expansion of vocational training programs. A recent study by the Philippine Statistics Authority found that 5.58 million Filipinos who have at least graduated junior high school are considered functionally illiterate. The SWS poll also showed that 83% believe that senators must support agricultural development with subsidies, training, and market access for farmers to boost food security. There were 82% who said that the Senate must prioritize investing in healthcare systems and 79% said that senators should push for expanding social welfare programs for low-income families. Further, 74% of the respondents are expecting the upper chamber to deal with the calls to increase the minimum wage and 73% said that promoting job creation must definitely be prioritized. The survey showed that 71% agree that senators should work on the implementation of price control measures to stabilize the cost of essential goods and services. There were 67% who said that the Senate must strengthen governance reforms to ensure transparency and accountability in government's spending. The survey commissioned by the Stratbase Group was done through face-to-face interviews of 1,8000 registered voters (aged 18 years and above) nationwide: 300 in Metro Manila, 900 in Balance Luzon, 300 in the Visayas, and 300 in Mindanao. The sampling error margins are ±2.31% for national percentages, ±3.27% for Balance Luzon, and ±5.66% each for Metro Manila, the Visayas and Mindanao. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BM, GMA Integrated News

Woman arrested at NAIA 3 for attempting to transport illegal drugs

A 62-year-old woman was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 for allegedly attempting to transport illegal drugs on Wednesday afternoon, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said. The suspect was bound for Bacolod City when authorities found two kilos of white crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine hydrochloride, or shabu, worth P13.7 million, in her hand carry baggage. 'At approximately 1 p.m., operatives of the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group (IADITG) conducted an operation at the Final Security Screening Checkpoint in the International Departure Area, leading to the apprehension of the suspect, who was scheduled to board a flight bound for Bacolod City,' said PDEA in a statement. 'Also seized during the operation were a cellular phone, a digital weighing scale, travel documents, and identification cards,' it added. Rescued 10-feet-long King Cobra released into wild in Palawan

Rizal, Palawan Facebook page An endangered 10-feet-long King Cobra that was found inside a house in Sitio Libtong, Barangay Iraan in Rizal, Palawan was released into the wild after its rescue. According to Super Radyo Palawan's JB Juanich on Thursday, the snake also has a width of 5 inches and weighs 10 kilograms. The reptile was discovered underneath a bed and was immediately reported by residents to authorities. Personnel from the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Offices (MENRO) and the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) rescued the King Cobra and released it into the wild. MENRO advised the public to always report to authorities if they found animals out of the wild so they could properly be rescued. Meanwhile, the PCSD said that King Cobras are among threatened species, hence the a need to protect them. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
