Vishal Jethwa reveals 'mother cleaned houses' for a living; he 'had doubts' about attending Cannes due to poor English
Actor Vishal Jethwa recently marked his Cannes debut with the premiere of his film Homebound at the prestigious film festival. In a candid conversation with Zoom, Vishal reflected on his humble beginnings and revealed that just days before walking the red carpet, he had serious doubts about attending Cannes. (Also Read: Vishal Jethwa takes mom to Cannes Film Festival, shares pics from business class air travel: 'Bachpan se sapna tha') Vishal admitted feeling extremely nervous ahead of his trip to the Cannes Film Festival. He was apprehensive about communicating in English and found the environment unfamiliar and intimidating. Surrounded by experienced professionals, Vishal felt overwhelmed and under pressure. Just a day before leaving for Cannes, the anxiety weighed so heavily on him that he contemplated not attending the event at all. When asked if he could relate to his character in Homebound, Vishal revealed, "I also come from a poor family. I was so confident at Cannes because my sister told me, 'Don't be so stressed,' because in a literal way, I am the son of a domestic help. Main ek kamwali bai jo hoti hain, unka beta hun (I am the son of a woman who worked as a domestic worker). Meri mumma ne logon ke ghar pe jhaadu pochha kiya hai (My mother used to sweep and mop people's homes), she used to sell sanitary pads in a supermarket. My father used to sell coconut water. I have seen all of this. And I could relate all this to it. But not now, now my life has moved beyond that. But privilege is such a big thing — I never knew that." He added, "Also, we tend to think privilege is only a positive word, that it only brings benefits. But that's not true. With privilege comes more responsibility. Like my co-actors, Ishaan and Janhvi, they've had privilege in their lives. We tend to think that the opportunities they've received mean their lives are sorted — but that's not true. They have to work just as hard. Many directors' and producers' kids have come and gone, but not all have succeeded. It's about who the audience accepts. So, just having privilege doesn't guarantee anything. They might get the opportunity, sure. We won't get those same opportunities. We have to deliver extraordinary performances. That's the difference. But this is not a complaint, just a fact." Helmed by Neeraj Ghaywan, the film is backed by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta and Somen Mishra. The film stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa and Janhvi Kapoor in lead roles. Homebound follows the story of two childhood friends from a small village in North India who dream of becoming police officers, hoping the job will bring them the respect they never had. However, as they come closer to their goal, pressure and struggles begin to test their friendship. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, where it received a nine-minute standing ovation.

Homebound actor Vishal Jethwa says mother cleaned people's homes, father sold coconut water: ‘I was so low about going to Cannes, I don't know English'
Actor Vishal Jethwa, who is currently riding high after the premiere of his film Homebound at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, recently opened up in an interview about the emotional turmoil he faced before attending the event. Vishal revealed that he almost skipped the festival due to fear and self-doubt. He said, 'I was really scared… even before I reached there, I was extremely nervous… because I've always had this weakness, how will I talk to people in English? I was completely unfamiliar with the environment, and everyone I was going with was very experienced. I was really scared about how I would present myself in front of everyone. In fact, I was feeling so low before going to Cannes, the pressure was so intense that I thought of backing out.' He continued, 'I wasn't worried about what I might lose. I had made up my mind. But after talking to a few people who counselled me, I automatically gained a lot of confidence. Once I reached there, there was this energy that was driving me. I was wearing my confidence before I wore my attire, and that was the most important thing. That's why, when I got there, I was enjoying myself, I was living the moment… because I had nothing to lose.' Speaking further about how he went from presenting his film at Cannes to now working with leading production houses like Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions, Vishal opened up about his humble beginnings. 'I come from a very poor family… and I was actually confident there because my sister told me before I left, 'Don't stress so much… because you are the son of a domestic help.' She literally cleaned people's homes, did jhadoo-pocha… she sold sanitary pads in a supermarket. My father sold coconut water and I've seen all this.' He further added, 'Today, of course, my life has moved beyond that. And I don't even realise how big a thing privilege is. Also, we tend to think privilege is only a positive word, that it only brings benefits. But that's not true. With privilege comes more responsibility.' We tend to think that the opportunities they've received mean their lives are sorted — but that's not true. They have to work just as hard. Many directors' and producers' kids have come and gone, but not all have succeeded. It's about who the audience accepts. So just having privilege doesn't guarantee anything. They might get the opportunity — sure. We won't get those same opportunities. We have to deliver extraordinary performances. That's the difference. But this is not a complaint — just a fact. Because when you work hard and move ahead, that's when people want to take photos with you.' He also added a powerful thought on legacy and privilege: 'We feel like their problems are different, but that doesn't mean their problems are lesser. I want to say something about privilege — if I have a son tomorrow, he'll get the Jethwa surname, and that will bring him both benefits and disadvantages. So privilege works like that too.'

Was Vishal Jethwa Rude To Homebound Co-Star Ishaan Khatter? Former Speaks Out
Vishal Jethwa is on cloud nine! His new film Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, just got a huge round of applause, a full nine minutes, at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. But while fans were busy praising the film, a short video from an interview started going viral. In the clip, Vishal and Janhvi Kapoor are seen chatting with each other, while Ishaan Khatter sits quietly, focused on answering a question. Some people on social media felt that Vishal and Janhvi were being 'rude" and ignoring Ishaan. Now, Vishal has spoken up to clear the confusion. In an interview with Zoom, Vishal reacted to allegations of being rude towards Ishaan. He clarified, 'Aisa bilkul bhi nahi hai. Uss waqt Ishaan mujhe help kar raha tha kyunki main voh question understand nahi kar pa raha tha. Vahan language issue yeh bhi hai ki log French mein baat karte hai. Uska translation English mein aur English mein bhi kaise baat karni hai main samajh nahi pa raha tha. Ishaan ne answer dena shuru kiya till the time I was talking to Janhvi to understand what they were asking me. Aisa zara bhi nahi hai main Ishaan ki bohot respect karta hu. Main bohot thankful hu kyunki main usse bohot kuch seekhta hu." (That's not true. Ishaan was trying to help me understand the question they were asking me. Since we were in France, they [the reporters] were talking in French. Due to that language issue, I had to understand what they said in French and what it meant in English and how I should answer it correctly. Ishaan started answering first. Meanwhile, I was talking to Janhvi to understand what they were asking me. I respect Ishaan immensely. I am thankful to him for always guiding me.) Homebound, produced by Karan Johar, had its big premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025. The film hasn't got a release date for theatres yet. Homebound recently faced controversy when the film's cameraman, Pratik Shah, was accused of bad behaviour and misconduct. After the news came out, he deleted his Instagram account, which made people start guessing what was going on. The production team shared a statement later. 'Mr. Pratik Shah was a freelancer on the project Homebound and was working on it for a limited period. His engagement with us has been completed. During this limited period, our internal committee for POSH didn't receive any complaints against him from any cast or crew on our film Homebound," read the statement.
