Protest in Ratlam after dead calf found, SIT to probe

Indore: A dead calf, stuffed in a sack and dumped in a garbage pile near a garden by Amrit Sagar lake in Ratlam, led to a major protest by Hindu organisations on Saturday afternoon. The groups protested accusing the local administration of failing to curb illegal cattle rearing and unauthorised meat shops in the city. The protesters placed the calf's carcass at Bajna bus stand crossroads to stage a blockade. After blocking the road for about 45 minutes, they began marching toward civic body corporation office with the dead calf's body. Municipal commissioner Anil Bhana and other officials intercepted the protesters at the Lakkadpeetha area. A tense stand-off ensued with the protesters shouting slogans against the administration. Vishva Hindu Parishad, Gau Raksha, state head Yogesh Chauhan said that the calf's body appeared to be three to four days old and was mauled by dogs. He demanded action against those who abandon their animals in garbage dumps after they die. He also raised concerns about the presence of numerous illegal meat shops in the city, in addition to the 35 licensed ones. CSP Satyendra Ghanghoria said, "We have assured them that their demands will be addressed. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident." After the protest was called off, municipal corporation officials dug a pit near the site, where the calf was found and buried the body after a veterinary doctor examined it. ‘Khalid Ka Shivaji' to be removed from Cannes festival listings; ‘won't allow tampering with history,' says Ashish Shelar

A probe is underway to determine how the film Khalid Ka Shivaji, which allegedly distorts history and hurts public sentiment, was submitted to the Cannes Film Festival, Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar said on Thursday, adding that the movie will be removed from the Cannes listings through legal and administrative action. Right-wing groups have alleged that the film wrongly portrays the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji. The state government has requested the Centre to revoke the film's censor certificate and halt its further screenings. Acting on this, central agencies have already issued urgent notices to the film's producers and director. Shelar assured that the state government stands firmly with Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji's devotees and historians and will not allow any distortion or misrepresentation of history or attack on public sentiments. 'Tampering with history will not be tolerated,' he said. The decision comes days after right-wing organisations, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal and others raised objections against the film. On Tuesday, a protest against the film was held during the Maharashtra State Marathi Film Awards ceremony. Khalid Ka Shivaji, directed by Raj Pritam More, is about a Muslim boy who learns about Shivaji through life experiences. More won the National Film Award in 2019 for his Marathi film Khissa under the 'Best Debut Non-Feature Film of a Director' category. At the heart of the dispute surrounding the film is the long-standing debate in Maharashtra on whether Shivaji was primarily a Hindu warrior-king or a secular, inclusive ruler who stood against oppression regardless of religion.

Kerala nuns arrest: Chhattisgarh woman says statement was coerced, reports ‘The Indian Express'

One of the three women whom two nurses from Kerala have been accused of targeting, allegedly to carry out forcible religious conversion, told The Indian Express that she was coerced by a person associated with a Hindutva group into giving an adverse statement. The nuns – Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis – were arrested at the Durg railway station on Saturday along with a man, identified as Sukhman Mandavi. The first information report against them was registered based on a complaint by a member of the Hindutva group Bajrang Dal, reported The Indian Express on Thursday. The two nuns and Mandavi were accompanying three women from Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district. Sebastian Poomattam, vicar general of the Raipur Archdiocese, said that the nuns were taking the women to Agra, where they had been offered jobs as kitchen helpers at a convent. 'Please release all three [two nuns and Mandavi], they are innocent,' one of the three women told The Indian Express. The woman alleged that she had been threatened and assaulted by Jyoti Sharma, who is associated with a Hindutva group, to give a false statement against the nuns, the newspaper reported. 'They took us to the railway police station,' the woman was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. 'Jyoti Sharma hit me twice on the face. She said that if you do not follow what we say, we will put your siblings in jail and assault them.' She added: 'They wanted us to say that we were brought here forcibly.' The woman said she had told Sharma that she came to the railway station on her own will and with the consent of her parents. 'I said this inside the police station in the presence of two to three policemen,' she said. She added that the Government Railway Police did not record her statement and instead filed the FIR against the three nuns. The three women had been sent to a government-run shelter home after the arrests. The woman who spoke to The Indian Express returned to her home in Narayanpur district on Wednesday after spending five days at the facility in Durg. Rishi Mishra, the Bajrang Dal's Chhattisgarh coordinator, said that Sharma was part of the Vishva Hindu Parishad's women's wing Durga Vahini. The Bajrang Dal and the Vishva Hindu Parishad are among Hindutva groups led by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the parent organisation of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Sharma was quoted by The Indian Express as describing herself as a 'Hindutvawadi who appears wherever Hindutva needs saving'. When asked about the allegation that she had hit one of the women, Sharma told The Indian Express: 'I did not touch any of them.' Sharma claimed that she only met the women inside the police station. 'Will the police allow me to touch them?' the newspaper quoted her as saying. 'I am hearing this for the first time: earlier, they were saying I beat a nun, which is false.' She added that she learnt that the women were at the railway station when 'one of the workers' called her and said that a woman on platform number 1 was crying and wanted to go home. Mishra told The Indian Express that a rickshaw driver associated with the outfit had 'overheard a conversation between the nuns and the women and suspected they were being trafficked'. He added that the Bajrang Dal workers reached the station and filed a complaint with the Government Railway Police. According to The Indian Express, Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Arun Kumar Gautam declined to comment on the Narayanpur woman's allegations, saying the matter is sub judice. The nuns are members of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, a congregation under the Syro-Malabar Church in Alappuzha district's Cherthala town and were working at a hospital in Agra. The nuns and Mandavi were remanded to judicial custody till August 8. They were charged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections pertaining to human trafficking and the Chhattisgarh Religious Freedom Act. A sessions court in Durg has since disposed of their bail petitions, saying that the case falls under the National Investigation Agency Act and should be heard by an NIA court. 'I had never met the nuns before' The woman from Narayanpur told The Indian Express that she lives with her parents and four sisters and earns Rs 250 a day as a daily wage worker. She said that she had learnt about a job opportunity from Mandavi, who attends the same church and is like a brother to her. 'I used to cycle nine km every day for work,' she said. 'I have studied up to Class 10. Mandavi offered me a job as a cook for the nuns and to look after patients [at a hospital in Agra]. They promised Rs 10,000 apart from food, clothes and shelter. I was happy.' According to her, she and two other women from Orcha in Narayanpur district arrived at Durg railway station around 6 am on the day the nuns were arrested. They were accompanied by Mandavi. Around 9 am, the two nuns, whom she said she had never met before, joined them. Soon after, a Bajrang Dal worker and personnel from the Government Railway Police arrived and began questioning them, she told The Indian Express. 'I had met the nuns for the first time,' the woman said. 'When we were being assaulted, one of the nuns told me, 'Do not worry, I am here with you.' She told the person beating us, 'Hit us, but not them.''

Mazar in Haryana's Nuh damaged ahead of ‘jalabhishek' yatra

A mazar was damaged ahead of the Brij Mandal Jalabhishek yatra in Nuh's Tauru town, police said on Monday (July 14, 2025) as security was ramped up in the District to ensure there is no repeat of the clashes that broke out during the religious procession two years ago. The culprits behind the vandalism on Sunday (July 13, 2025) night are unidentified, officials said. After the incident, a large number of police personnel have been deployed at the mazar in Tauru's Sainipura mohalla. "Necessary action is being taken by the administration in connection with the damage to the mazar in Tauru. It will be ensured that the Jalabhishek yatra is organised in a peaceful and harmonious environment in the district," said Nuh Deputy Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena. He said all officials have been instructed to make all necessary arrangements in their areas. Duty magistrates and police officers have been deployed at all places. Devotees are going to temples to perform their prayers. The yatra will start from the Nalheshwar temple in Nuh, about 50 km from Gurugram. "There is an atmosphere of peace in all areas. The general public is appealed to trust only official information," Meena said. On July 31, 2023, six people, including two home guards and a cleric of a Gurugram mosque, were killed in clashes that erupted when a mob attacked a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession in Nuh. To ensure that all goes well this year, around 2,500 police personnel have been deployed. All Government and private schools in the District are closed and internet services suspended. The carrying of all weapons, including licensed arms, firearms, swords, sticks, tridents, rods, knives and chains, have been banned. Only the sheathed kirpan, worn as a religious symbol by members of the Sikh community, has been exempted. The use of DJs, loudspeakers or sound-amplifying devices with content that is religiously provocative or hurts the sentiments of any community are also strictly prohibited during the yatra, the order read. The District Administration has also banned the sale of meat along the yatra route starting Sunday (July 13). Meat shops along the Kanwar route are to remain closed till July 24. The Haryana government on Sunday ordered the suspension of mobile internet, bulk SMS services (excluding banking and mobile recharge), and all dongle services provided on mobile networks, except voice calls, in Nuh district for 24 hours -- from 9 pm on July 13 to 9 pm on July 14.

The security has been tightened in Nuh with the deployment of 2000 police personnel to ensure the peaceful conduct of the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra on Monday, a senior police officer said. Heightened security comes against the backdrop of viloence during the yatra two years back, triggering riots across several districts of south Haryana. The clashes erupted after a mob attacked a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession in Nuh on July 31, 2023. On the fourth day of Shravan today, Jalabhishek Yatra is scheduled to be carried out in the Nuh district. The police have stepped up security measures including drones for surveillance to check any untoward incident. He added that 2,000 police personnel have been deployed to ensure safety and crowd management. "The police have made security arrangements for the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra. Eighteen police companies have been deployed. 2,000 police personnel have been deployed to ensure the safety of the Jalabhishek Yatra and to carry out traffic duties while managing the crowd," SP Kumar told reporters here. "Those who have a record of trying to hinder the Yatra through videos or other means have been restrained from joining the Yatra. Following the court's directives, we are ensuring that no anti-social elements, who can hinder the Yatra by delivering provocative speeches, will be restricted from joining the Yatra. We will also take strict action against those who fail to follow directives issued by the police," he added. Recently, the Haryana government ordered the temporary suspension of mobile internet and bulk SMS services in Nuh district amid apprehensions of communal tension and public disorder. According to an official order issued by the Department of Home Affairs under Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act, 2023 and Rule 3 of the Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024, the suspension will remain in effect from 9:00 PM on July 13 to 9:00 PM on July 14. The order read, "Whereas, it has been brought to my notice by ADGP/CID, Haryana and Deputy Commissioner, Nuh vide their requests dated 13.07.2025 that there is an apprehension of causing tension, annoyance, agitation, damage of public & private property and disturbance of public peace & tranquility in the district Nuh." "There is a clear potential of disruption of public utilities, damage to public assets and amenities and disturbance of public law and order in district Nuh on account of misuse of internet services by way of spread of inflammatory material and false rumours, which are being/could be transmitted/circulated to the public through social media/messaging services on mobile internet services, SMS services and other dongle services," it added. "In order to stop the spread of misinformation and rumours through various social media platforms, such as WhatsApp, Facebook Twitter, etc. on mobile phones and SMS for facilitation and mobilisation of mobs of agitators and demonstrators who can cause serious loss of life and damage to public and private properties by indulging in arson or vandalism and other types of violent activities," the order stated. The state government has also warned that any person found violating the terms of the suspension order will face legal action under relevant provisions of law.
