Highly paid contractual docs to be barred from pvt practice

Panaji: Health minister Vishwajit Rane on Monday said he has moved a file to bar highly paid govt doctors hired on a contractual basis, from carrying out private practice. He said those earning a monthly salary of more than Rs 8-10 lakh will not be able to take up private practice when new rules are brought in. There are many Goan doctors working outside the state who want to return, he said. 'A doctor working on a contractual basis at the GMC earns Rs 14 lakh a month. That's why I have moved a file to bring in new rules to ensure that those earning more than Rs 8-10 lakh monthly don't take up private practice. They will have to devote all their attention to the MC. If one earns Rs 14 lakh and practices privately too, what will happen to the common man who seeks services at the GMC?' Rane asked. All non-contractual govt doctors in Goa receive a non-practising allowance, yet several of them also indulge in private practice. Rane also said govt has decided to increase the OPD timings at the GMC. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Finance row: SGPDA seeks to bypass MMC for waste collection

Margao: A bitter financial dispute over garbage collection erupted between the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) and the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) recently and is yet to be resolved. The SGPDA is now seeking to engage alternative agencies for waste collection, effectively bypassing the MMC altogether. A written reply tabled in the House in the just-concluded monsoon session of the state legislative assembly revealed the extent of the problem. At the heart of the dispute lie two substantial claims: the MMC's demand for Rs 1.8 crore for waste management services provided to the SGPDA's retail market, and the SGPDA's counterclaim of Rs 3.4 crore dues in unpaid rent for the MMC's operation of a bio-methanation plant on SGPDA property. The financial tussle has been brewing for months, with both bodies sticking to their positions, though garbage collection resumed functioning as usual after a brief hiatus. According to the reply by minister for town and country planning Vishwajit Rane, SGPDA officials claimed that the MMC unilaterally increased daily garbage collection charges from Rs 550 to Rs 5,500 per trip — a staggering 900% increase implemented 'without any notice'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo This fee hike has been termed 'unjustified' by the SGPDA, which has questioned the sudden increase in costs for what was previously a routine municipal service. The MMC, however, has maintained, the reply added, that it has 'no dispute' with the SGPDA, but has pointed out that the SGPDA is not providing waste in a segregated manner required under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, creating problems for the onward disposal. The council conveyed its concerns to the SGPDA even as it continued lifting garbage from SGPDA markets on a daily basis. However, with the standoff showing no signs of resolution, the SGPDA approached the Goa Waste Management Corporation, urging it to appoint alternative agencies for garbage collection, the minister's reply said. Donald Trump Tariffs News: Goa Minister Echoes Modi's 'India First' Stance, calls United States' move...

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday slapped an additional 25 per cent tariff, raising it to 50 per cent, on goods coming from India as penalty for New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil, a move that is likely to hit sectors such as textiles, marine and leather exports hard. The United States has imposed this additional tariff or penalty for Russian imports only on India while other buyers such as China and Turkey have so far escaped such measures. The 30 per cent tariff on China and 15 per cent on Turkey is lower than India's 50 per cent. Reacting to this development, a senior minister from Goa has aligned closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'India First' approach, reaffirming the government's firm commitment to protect the interests of farmers, even as the United States escalates trade pressure with a massive 50% tariff. Vishwajit Rane echoed Modi's defiant tone. India's top leadership has slammed the move as 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' vowing to take necessary steps to safeguard national priorities. In a statement delivered in Panaji, Vishwajit Rane emphasized that farming communities, dairy workers, and fishermen remain at the heart of government policy. 'We will not compromise their welfare, regardless of external pressures,' he declared, echoing PM Modi's earlier sentiment that he's 'ready to pay a heavy price' to ensure their well‑being. India on Trump's additional tariff In a statement, the MEA pointed out that several other countries are also making such procurements to protect their own national interest and hinted its disappointment for singling it out on the issue. The US president issued the executive order hitting India with an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods citing its continuing procurement of Russian crude oil. The additional tariff, to come into effect after 21 days, will increase the duties on some Indian goods to 50 per cent. The tariffs are likely to hit sectors such as textiles, marine and leather hard. 'We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' the MEA said. It said the US has in recent days 'targeted' India's oil imports from Russia. 'We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India,' it said. 'It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,' it added.

No need for separate law on widow discrimination: Goa govt tells assembly

Agency: PTI Panaji, Aug 7 (PTI) The Goa government on Thursday ruled out enacting a separate law to protect widows from various forms of discrimination and told the assembly existing support mechanisms are adequate to deal with such practices. The government has not received any representations about widow discrimination in the state, said Women and Child Development Minister Vishwajit Rane. In a written reply tabled in the house to a starred question by MLAs Altone D'Costa, Carlos Ferreira, and Yuri Alemao, the minister informed that no memorandums, appeals, or letters have been received by the government regarding widow discrimination, abuse, or isolation in the state. Responding to the legislators' query about steps taken to end unjust funeral-related customs targeting women, Rane pointed out that no such cases have been reported so far in Goa. Issues related to widow abuse or discrimination can be addressed through the dedicated women helpline (181) under the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) and through the network of One Stop Centres (OSCs) set up across the state, he told the house. 'The helpline offers immediate and emergency response to women affected by violence, including widows facing discrimination," the reply stated. 'One Stop Centres provide integrated support, including psychological, legal, and medical aid, and act as a single point of contact for women seeking help," Rane maintained. Existing mechanisms are adequate to deal with cases of widow abuse or discrimination and there was no need for a new law to address such issues, the minister opined.
