Amazon's AI coding agent was hacked - update now to avoid possible risks, users warned

On July 13 2025, the malicious commit from 'lkmanka58' on GitHub included a prompt to delete system and cloud resources, with Amazon unknowingly publishing the compromised version (1.84.0) on July 17. With suspicious activity noted on July 23 and Amazon developers quickly springing into action, a clean version was released on July 24 without the malicious code, so users are being advised to update to 1.85.0 as a matter of urgency. Amazon missed some malicious code in its Q Developer Extension Despite the apparent threat, Amazon noted the code was malformed and wouldn't execute in user environments, but some researchers have disputed this, saying that the code had executed, but hadn't caused any harm. Regardless, version 1.84.0 has been removed altogether from distribution channels. Still, users have expressed concerns that such a potentially dangerous snippet of code could have been missed by Amazon, taking to online communities like Reddit to criticize Amazon for silently editing the git history and being slow to disclose the mistake. Amazon's incident isn't unique, though, with a 2024 academic survey of nearly 53,000 VS Code extensions revealing around 5.6% have suspicious elements like arbitrary network calls, privilege abuse or obfuscated code. Ultimately, developers are being advised not to unconditionally trust IDE extensions and AI assistants, however many have been left disappointed that Amazon let this one slip through the net. Developers adopt AI tools but trust issues persist, survey finds
Stack Overflow has released the results of its 2025 Developer Survey, detailing the perceptions and habits of more than 49,000 technologists across 177 countries. The AI trust gap The survey indicates a significant disparity between AI adoption and trust among developers. While 84% of respondents use or plan to use artificial intelligence tools in their workflow, nearly half (46%) report that they do not trust the accuracy of AI-generated output. This marks a substantial rise from 31% indicating a lack of trust in the previous year. This year's expanded artificial intelligence section included 15 new questions, addressing topics such as the utility of AI agent tools, the impact of AI on developers' jobs, and the phenomenon of "vibe coding". "The growing lack of trust in AI tools stood out to us as the key data point in this year's survey, especially given the increased pace of growth and adoption of these AI tools. AI is a powerful tool, but it has significant risks of misinformation or can lack complexity or relevance. With the use of AI now ubiquitous and 'AI slop' rapidly replacing the content we see online, an approach that leans heavily on trustworthy, responsible use of data from curated knowledge bases is critical. By providing a trusted human intelligence layer in the age of AI, we believe the tech enthusiasts of today can play a larger role in adding value to build the AI technologies and products of tomorrow," said Prashanth Chandrasekar, CEO of Stack Overflow. The survey found that 75% of users do not trust AI-generated answers, and 45% find debugging AI-generated code time-consuming. Ethical and security concerns are prevalent, with 61.7% citing these as reasons for hesitancy, while 61.3% wish to maintain full understanding of their code. AI use and productivity Despite low overall adoption, AI agents are associated with productivity improvements. Only 31% of developers currently use AI agents, but among those, 69% report increased workplace productivity. Meanwhile, 17% are planning to adopt such tools, while 38% are not planning to use them at all. A majority (64%) of developers do not see AI as a threat to their employment, though this figure has declined slightly from the previous year's 68%. Platforms and tools Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio remain the most used Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). New AI-enabled IDEs have entered the market, with Cursor at an 18% usage rate, Claude Code at 10%, and Windsurf at 5% among respondents. Among large language models (LLMs), OpenAI's GPT series is the most popular, used by 81% of developers surveyed. Claude Sonnet received 43% usage, and Gemini Flash 35%. Vibe coding and new ways of learning 'Vibe coding', defined as generating software from LLM prompts, was explored for the first time. While AI tools are being adopted for learning and development, nearly 77% of developers indicated that vibe coding is not part of their professional workflow. The trend is more relevant for less experienced developers seeking a rapid start, but it comes with a trade-off in the level of trust and confidence in the output. Community platforms continue to play an important role. Stack Overflow is the most common platform, used or planned to be used by 84% of respondents, followed by GitHub at 67%, and YouTube at 61%. Notably, 35% of respondents reported consulting Stack Overflow when confronted with AI-related issues. The survey shows that 69% of developers have learned a new technology or programming language in the past year, with 36% focusing specifically on AI-enabled tools. Usage of AI tools for learning to code has risen to 44%, up from 37% last year. Top resources remain technical documentation (68%), online resources (59%), and Stack Overflow (51%). For those learning AI-specific skills, 53% used AI tools. Gen Z developers (aged 18-24) are more likely to engage with coding challenges, with 15% participating compared to an overall average of 12%. Additionally, a higher proportion of this age group prefers chat-based and challenge-based learning approaches than other cohorts. International responses and technology adoption The United States, Germany, India, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Ukraine, Poland, Netherlands, and Italy were the top ten countries by survey participation. Trust in AI tools differs by region; India saw the highest proportion of developers expressing some or significant trust in AI at 56%, followed by Ukraine at 41%. Other countries showed lower levels of trust, including Italy (31%), Netherlands and United States (28%), Poland (26%), Canada and France (25%), United Kingdom (23%), and Germany (22%). Python continues to gain in popularity, with a seven percentage point increase since 2024. JavaScript (66%), HTML/CSS (62%), and SQL (59%) remain popular programming languages. Docker usage grew by 17 percentage points to 71%, marking it as a widely adopted tool in cloud and infrastructure development. PostgreSQL holds the position as the most sought-after database technology, with 47% planning to use it in the next year or continuing usage, marking its third year at the top in this category. For documentation and collaboration, GitHub leads at 81%, followed by Jira (46%) and GitLab (36%).

A programmer beat an OpenAI tool at coding. He says the AI made him push himself to win.
AI hasn't yet killed the coding star. On Wednesday, a programmer from Poland, Przemysław Dębiak, beat an OpenAI tool at the AtCoder World Tour Finals 2025 Heuristic Contest in Tokyo, which is sponsored by the company. "I was so tired. I actually felt at some point that I should take a break," Dębiak, who competed under the name "Psyho," told Business Insider over a video call on Friday. "But at the same time, I was very close to getting a score comparable to the model," he added. That pushed him to dig deep, using "all the remaining energy" to beat the AI. "I'm trying to give 100% of what I have and try to stay alive," he said, adding that without OpenAI's model, his score "would be much, much lower." Dębiak's victory drew the attention of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. In a post on X on Wednesday, Altman wrote, "good job psyho." When reached for comment, OpenAI directed BI to a post on X, where it had written, "Our model took 2nd place at the AtCoder Heuristics World Finals! Congrats to the champion for holding us off this time." The contest is held annually and run by AtCoder, a Japan-based competitive programming site. Yoichi Iwata, the competition's administrator, told BI that OpenAI's model outperformed those who used similar approaches, but Dębiak "arrived at a completely different solution." "We expected a human to win, and were rather surprised that the AI was able to secure second place," Iwata added. "While the AI surpassed humans in terms of optimization ability, we believe it still fell short of human creativity." The competition's results page shows Dębiak prevailing over competitors from Japan, Georgia, and France. On Friday, Dębiak shared a results page on X that showed him as the competition's victor and OpenAI in second place. He told BI he flew from Warsaw to Tokyo for the competition. The programmer wrote on X that he did not use AI tools, just "regular" Visual Studio Code, a software development platform, with "some basic autocomplete to speed up repetitive stuff." Dębiak, 41, told BI he only found out about OpenAI's entry a week before the contest. "No one knew that this would be, to some extent, an exhibition match between humans and AI," he said. The stars aligned for the human AI will win in cases that require straightforward engineering — implementing algorithms, solving the problem, and optimizing code — because it's simply faster, Dębiak told BI. But in longer contests where programmers "do everything from scratch," he said, AI has a harder time keeping up. "The longer the contest is, the more chances for humans and less chances for AI," he said, adding that he overtook OpenAI's tool near the end of the 10-hour competition. Dębiak said he competed in "algorithmic optimization," where the goal was to write the most efficient solution to a complex problem. In this competition, he had to code a program that guided robots across a 30x30 grid using the fewest moves possible. Reflecting on the competition, Dębiak said the variables lined up in his favor. "It's easy to imagine a different problem where AI would win and all the humans would be like far, far away," he added. AI has famously beaten humans in other high-profile competitions. In 1997, IBM's Deep Blue AI machine beat chess grandmaster Gary Kasparov, and in 2016, Google DeepMind's AlphaGo beat Go world champion Lee Sedol. In February, Altman said that by the end of the year, OpenAI could surpass humans in coding competitions. AI is already writing big chunks of code at Microsoft, Google, and Meta, the companies' CEOs have all said in recent months. Altman has said that demand for software engineers could eventually dip. "My basic assumption is that each software engineer will just do much, much more for a while. And then at some point, yeah, maybe we do need less software engineers," he said in March, referring to OpenAI's hiring strategy.
