Can crunch hits United Breweries' growth as demand for canned beer surges
India's largest beer manufacturer, United Breweries Ltd is facing an unprecedented challenge -- shortage of cans leading to frequent stock outs when consumers now prefer to drink canned beer. The company has lost at least 1-2 points of growth due to this over the last six months, said managing director Vivek Gupta . "The shortage of cans is a challenge. Cans as a segment is growing at a certain pace, and there is no quick fix for the supply of cans. So that is a little bit of something for us, in the next quarter. This is definitely (an issue) for us, and for the industry as well. The premium portfolio, in particular, grew at 46%. Gupta said there is a fixed supply of cans in the market, whether it's for the beer industry, or some of the other industries. Even within beer industry, there is a fixed quota while the demand is more than that, he said. "So we definitely have stock outs, because we are not being able to supply cans. Or that we cant get cans,' he said. The MD said importing cans will also take time. "The government of India, along with multiple associations are working on that, but that also will take time, the backward integration in the beer industry needs a lot of work. Whether it's bottles or cans. We are actually actively working with international suppliers for long term on that. We would have atleast lost, I would say, 1-2 points growth because of lack of cans over a 6-month period," said Gupta. Last year the company imported new bottles as supplies remained tight. "The recycled bottle supply chain was very much disturbed by high cullet demand," the company said in its latest annual report. United Breweries has posted its standalone profit after tax for the first quarter ending June 30th at Rs 184 crore which grew by 6% on a year-on-year basis, and the net sales for the period grew by 16% to reach Rs 2,862 crore. The company invested Rs 136 crore in the first quarter as compared to Rs 89 crore during the same period last year. The investments were primarily focused on commercial and supply chain initiatives. On Wednesday, United Breweries' shares closed at Rs2,020 a piece on the BSE, down by 0.78%.

Doctor booked for facilitating illegal stay of two Uzbek women, performing plastic surgery without formalities
A case has been registered against a Lucknow-based doctor for allegedly facilitating the illegal stay of two women from Uzbekistan and performing plastic surgery on them without completing the required formalities, police said. The women did not possess valid passports or visas, the police said, claiming they lost the documents two years ago. Besides Dr Vivek Gupta, the police have filed the FIR against Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana, a native of Kerala residing in Lucknow on rent, for also allegedly arranging accommodation for the two women. The matter came to light following a tip-off from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Lucknow, after which the police raided a flat and found the two Uzbekistan women staying illegally. Dr Gupta is accused of performing plastic surgery on the women to help alter their identity, allegedly without completing the necessary documentation and legal formalities. An FIR has been lodged against Dr Vivek Gupta and Thrijin Raj alias Arun Rana at the Sushant Golf City police station. The case has been filed under section 318 (4) (cheating) of the BNS. Police also invoked the Foreigners Act against accused, said a police officer. When contacted, Sushant Golf City Station House Officer Upendra Singh said that no arrests have been made in the case so far. According to police, they received a tip-off from the FRRO, Lucknow, on Friday, stating that foreign nationals were staying illegally in a flat without informing the FRRO, local police, or administrative authorities. A police team raided the flat and found two foreign women living there. The women identified themselves as Holida and Nilofar and claimed that their passport and visa documents were lost after they arrived in India. Police have not ruled out the possibility of the foreign nationals being involved in illegal or suspicious activities. When asked to provide a copy of the lost documents, the women claimed they had informed their associate, Lola Kayumova, to file a complaint but had no knowledge of whether she actually did so. They further alleged that Lola, who has been living in India for some time, had facilitated their and others' arrival in the country. They also stated that it was through Lola that they were introduced to Dr. Vivek Gupta, who runs hospitals at two locations and had performed plastic surgery-related procedures on them. The women claimed Lola later introduced them to Arjun Rana, who lives in a separate rented accommodation. They alleged that both Arjun Rana and Dr. Vivek Gupta were responsible for arranging their stay in Lucknow.

Two Uzbek women undergo plastic surgery in Lucknow to avoid detection, detained
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) has detained two Uzbekistan women residing in Lucknow without passports and visas. In order to conceal their identities and avoid detection, both women underwent plastic surgery at a local clinic. The two women, Holida and Nilofar, were detained by FRRO from a flat in Omaxe City located in the Sushant Golf City area. Both underwent plastic surgery at the clinic of Dr Vivek Gupta in Lucknow. advertisementDuring interrogation, both women confessed that they had come to Lucknow two years ago. The surgery was conducted by Dr Gupta at his clinic on the instructions of Trijin Raj alias Arjun Rana for a huge sum of money. An FIR has been registered against Dr Vivek Gupta and Trijin Raj under sections of the Foreigners Act in Sushant Golf city and a hunt is on to nab the accused.

LUCKNOW: Just half a kilometre away from the Signature Building — the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters in Lucknow — whispers of scandal swirled around a flat in Omaxe R1, where Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana (33), posing as a journalist with GTS News, lived with his Uzbek live-in partner, Lola Kayumova (48). Their seemingly ordinary life by day turned sinister under the cover of night. Originally from Alappuzha, Kerala, Thrijin had rented apartment Orchid B104, where two other Uzbek women, Holida and Nilofar, also resided. 'All the occupants of the apartment are allegedly involved in a sex racket, whose kingpin is a plastic surgeon practicing in Lucknow for over 11 years. The FRRO team first developed ground intelligence on the accused and later roped in the Sushant Golf City police of the Lucknow Commissionerate to investigate further. Another person named in the FIR is Thrijin Raj alias Arjun Rana. All these women were then forced into prostitution,' added the source. In the FIR, Holida and Nilofar claimed their passports and visas were stolen two years ago. They have further informed police that over the years, several other foreign nationals also entered India with Lola Kayumova's help, and many of them had visited Dr Vivek Gupta's clinic for plastic surgery. 'Their apartment became a hub of nocturnal activity, with frequent visits from foreign women. Cloaked in secrecy, these women were ferried around the city in local cabs, disappearing into the night. Thrijin was running much more than a news desk,' said a local resident of Omaxe R1. Police have recovered Thrijin's Aadhaar card, bank documents, journalist ID card, his father Rajan's Aadhaar, and both the passport and Aadhaar card of Lola Kayumova. Interestingly, Thrijin's Aadhaar lists the address as Baldev Vihar, Telibagh — about 13 km from Omaxe R1. 'The role of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) of Omaxe R1 must also be investigated — how was such a flat rented to this group despite glaring irregularities?' the resident added. Further legal sections are expected to be invoked as the investigation progresses, according to official sources.

Oswal Pumps gains on debut
Shares of Oswal Pumps were currently trading at Rs 641.20 at 10:14 IST on the BSE, representing a premium of 4.43% compared with the issue price of Rs 614. The scrip was listed at 632, matching the initial public offer (IPO) price. The stock was currently up 2.93% over its listing price. So far, the stock has hit a high of 646.25 and a low of 625.20. On the BSE, over 6.96 lakh shares of the company were traded in the counter so far. The initial public offer of Oswal Pumps was subscribed 34.42 times. The issue opened for bidding on 13 June 2025 and it closed on 17 June 2025. The price band of the IPO is fixed between Rs 584 and 614 per share. The issue comprised both a fresh issue of equity shares upto Rs 890 crore and an offer for sale up to 81,00,000 equity shares by Vivek Gupta, one of the promoters of the company.
