Vizio TVs will now be sold exclusively at Walmart — but they'll have a new name

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Vizio TVs are in line to become a private-label brand on Walmart store shelves by year's end, which means they'll exclusively be sold out of the retailer's two mega storefronts, including Walmart and Sam's Club. Bloomberg broke the news late last week after reviewing an internal company memo. Walmart will fold Vizio into its assortment of 90 other store brands, though it's unclear if it will be renamed onn, Walmart's already existing TV brand. Vizio's move into the private-label sector is in accordance with Walmart's $2.3B acquisition of the TV maker, officially sealed in December of last year. Cheap(er) Walmart TVs on the horizon It's no secret that some of the best Vizio TVs are also some of the best budget TVs on the market, and they're bound to get even cheaper as a Walmart private-label brand. Bloomberg's reporting provides no indication of pricing or the expected rollout date, except for a late 2025 timeframe. Various models, like the Vizio Quantum Pro and Vizio V-Series sets, are available to purchase at alternative retailers outside of Walmart, including Target and Amazon. But it's not just the physical TVs themselves that Walmart is after. Where other TV makers, like Hisense, TCL, and Sony, rely on Google TV or Roku OS, Vizio is a unicorn. It makes and runs its own TV interface, called Smartcast, which Walmart bet $2.3B on in its push into the TV shopping experience. So, while Walmart moves Vizio into a private-label brand, Vizio's Smartcast, which is already being integrated onto existing Walmart onn displays, will be the beating heart of the buyout's success. Increased advertising and shoppable TV experiences, wherein consumers purchase goods straight from their displays, will be the real breadwinners for Walmart. More ads and in-your-face shopping experiences might not be the most exciting turn of events, but at least this will inevitably lead to the advent of cheaper TVs from Walmart. Onn TVs, while some of the worst displays on the market, can cost as much as $90 to $300. With Vizio's performance gains, they'll be worth considering. Media Empire That means its smart TVs would not be sold on Amazon (AMZN) and Target (TGT). Walmart bought Vizio and its SmartCast Operating System back in February 2024 for $2.3 billion. The memo states that by making Vizio's hardware and advertising capabilities exclusive to Walmart retail channels will help the company fortify and differentiate its growing media empire from that of its competitors. It also states that over 20 of its 90 private-label brands generate at least $1 billion in annual sales. It is understood that Walmart is launching a new lineup of smart TVs under the in-house Onn brand, powered by Vizio, later this year for the holidays season. That should open up another valuable revenue stream for the group. Holiday TV The operating system on Walmart's Onn smart TVs and Vizio TVs will reportedly be indistinguishable, with both offering access to popular apps like Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon's Prime Video. Walmart will stop licensing the Roku operating system for its Onn smart TVs and will shift to using SmartCast on an exclusive basis. In an analyst note today, focused on Roku (ROKU) rather than Walmart, Daniel Kurnos of Benchmark said that one of its main challenges was the U.S. retail giant's new TV range. 'The ongoing narrative around potential share loss to Walmart is going to be tough to dispel given how far out that event might be, never mind how long it will take Walmart to transition their ONN TVs,' he wrote. Walmart takes popular brand away from Amazon and Target

Exclusives used to be a major driver of retail traffic. It's a tactic that isn't used as much, but can still be used quite effectively. Target, for example, has done a number of exclusive offerings with big brands. Its collaboration with Kate Spade and its partnership with Taylor Swift, for exclusive versions of some of her albums have been very effective. Related: Bankrupt home goods chain cancels store location closings Nike might offer certain sneaker brands as an exclusive to its bigger retail partners like Dick's Sporting Goods. Target has also worked to build out the ultimate exclusives by having its own owned and operated brands. These are brand names created by the retailer that they manufacture themselves. That allows for lower prices as there is no third-party to share the revenue with, and it means that the brand can never be pulled. This isn't Target offering glorified generics like Costco's Kirkland originals brand. It's the company trying to build out actual brands that are unique to it stores. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter It takes time to build equity in lines like this, but the retailer has had a lot of success. That gives it whole product lines that rivals like target and Amazon cannot sell. Walmart has taken that further by buying a well-known brand and making the decision to stop selling it to other retailers. Instead, the popular electronics brand will become an exclusive product line for Walmart and Sam's Club. Walmart closed on the purchase of Vizio late last year. It did not make any quick changes to the brand or its partners. "Vizio offers great products at great prices that customers love. They've always put customers at the center of their business – and that's core to Walmart's values and the omnichannel experiences we're excited to roll out," said Walmart Chief U.S. Growth Officer Seth Dallaire. "Viziohas also expertly changed their business over time, like building and quickly scaling a profitable advertising business. Pairing it with Walmart Connect will be impactful and allow us to invest in our business even further on behalf of our customers." Walmart spent $2.38 billion to acquire the company. Vizio makes some of the best, most affordable TVs on the market, according to many reviewers. It also has a proprietary interface through which Walmart believes it an now introduce advertising. The television brand, perhaps under a new name, will also become exclusive to Walmart and Sam's Club. Increased advertising and shoppable TV experiences, wherein consumers purchase goods straight from their displays, will be the real breadwinners for Walmart," Tom's Guide reported. Buying Vizio and making it an exclusive Sam's Club and Walmart offering is about growing the company advertising business. That's something that has been a growing area for the brand. "Our advertising business across markets increased 50%, including Vizoo. Walmart Connect in the US, which doesn't include Vizio, grew 31%. Sam's Club U.S. ad business was up 21%, and we saw 20% growth in our International markets, led by Flipkart," Walmart CFO John David Rainey said during the chain's first quarter-earnings call. Walmart President John Furner was also bullish on advertising and Vizio during the call. It's a great operating system, very frictionless, easy to sign up, and we're looking forward to the contributions of the Vizio team going forward," he added.
