Blue Jays belt four homers in 12-0 rout of Athletics

Any lingering thoughts of the offensive woes that hampered the Toronto Blue Jays on their recent six-game road trip vanished over an inning to remember on Thursday night. Ernie Clement and Vladimir Guerrero homered and the Blue Jays batted around in an eight-run second frame en route to a 12-0 romp over the Athletics at Rogers Centre. Bo Bichette and George Springer added homers in the third inning as Toronto won its fourth straight home game and returned to the .500 mark at 28-28. 'It was a little bit contagious today in that second inning,' said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. 'That's about as best as you can draw it up.' The 12 runs scored doubled the team's six-run total output from a 2-4 road trip that saw the Blue Jays go 4-for-45 with runners in scoring position. In the opener of a seven-game homestand, Toronto seemed to hammer the ball at will against a struggling Athletics side (23-34) that extended its road losing skid to eight games. Clement smacked a three-run shot and added a two-run double later in the second inning. Guerrero's two-run rainbow blast left him tied for the team lead with eight homers this season. 'It's just nice to take a deep breath and not [be] fighting [in] a 0-0 game like we were all series [in] the last week or so,' Clement said. 'But I just think we've got to use it as momentum and keep doing it.' It was the most runs Toronto has scored in an inning since a nine-run frame against Tampa Bay nearly two years ago. It was also the 14th time in franchise history that the Blue Jays scored 11 runs over the first three innings. 'What I really liked is not taking your foot off the gas after you score eight, and you continue to add on,' Schneider said. Athletics starter Jacob Lopez (0-3) was chased after recording just five outs. He gave up six hits, a walk and seven earned runs. Bichette scored twice and drove in three runs. Clement and Alejandro Kirk had three hits apiece as Toronto pumped out 18 hits in all. Blue Jays starter Jose Berrios (2-2) was in full control over his six-inning appearance. He allowed two hits, two walks and had nine strikeouts. 'Nothing was bothering me out there,' Berrios said. 'So [I was] just competing, having fun and executing my pitches.' Mason Fluharty and Jose Urena completed the four-hit shutout. Announced attendance was 23,853 and the game took two hours 31 minutes to play. Blue Jays right-hander Max Scherzer is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Friday. The 40-year-old starter, who has been limited to one appearance this season due to a thumb injury, plans to throw 20-25 pitches. Reliever Erik Swanson (forearm) pitched a scoreless inning for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Thursday. After the game, the Blue Jays traded left-hander Josh Walker to the Philadelphia Phillies for cash considerations. He did not record a decision over three relief appearances for Toronto this season. Right-hander Chris Bassitt (4-3, 3.38) is tabbed to start for Toronto on Friday against left-hander Jeffrey Springs (5-3, 3.97). The Blue Jays have yet to confirm their starter for Saturday. Right-hander Kevin Gausman (5-4, 3.68) will get the nod for Sunday's series finale.

Ernie Clement hits walk-off single, Toronto Blue Jays beat Detroit Tigers 2-1

Toronto Blue Jays third base Ernie Clement (22) celebrates after hitting a walk off RBI single off Detroit Tigers pitcher Brenan Hanifee during ninth inning MLB baseball action in Toronto on Saturday May 17, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chris Young TORONTO — Ernie Clement emerged for his post-game session with reporters on Saturday with a massive ice bag on his right throwing shoulder. If a body part required treatment for the Toronto Blue Jays offensive hero, the best bet would have been his left kneecap. Clement was felled in the second inning when he fouled a 96 miles per hour fastball from Detroit starter Reese Olson off his kneecap. Clement stayed down for a lengthy period before staying in the game. Seven innings later he delivered his second career walk-off hit, a single up the middle to score Daulton Varsho in the ninth inning of Toronto's 2-1 win against the Detroit Tigers. 'Yeah, I'm going to sit in the tub for a little bit,' Clement said. Clement made only his second career start at first base to give Vladimir Guerrero a day as the Blue Jays designated hitter. So Clement employed the toughness mentality he gained as a hockey player at Brighton High School in Rochester, N.Y., to stay in the game. 'You got to grind through it,' Clement said. 'Vlad needed to get off his feet a little bit. So I'm staying in the ball game. They'd have to rip me off the field there, take a little hockey player's mentality and just fight through it. You know, fight for your boys.' Clement also led off the eighth inning with a walk and then scored the tying run on Alejandro Kirk's pinch-hit single down the right-field line. 'I think Ernie would have to have a bone sticking out before he'd come out of the game,' Toronto manager John Schneider said. Clement, a third baseman who sees occasional duty at shortstop didn't have much time to prepare for his new position. He took a few ground balls on Friday and just before Saturday's outing. 'I could take a million ground balls over there, and it's still going to be a little uncomfortable,' Clement said. 'I just went in, grinded and tried to help the boys.' Comeback kids The Blue Jays (21-23) are not among the leaders in the standings through 45 games, but they have 12 come-from-behind victories in 2025. The World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers have the most at 16. 'We're never out of a game,' Clement said. 'It's fun to play for this team. Our pitchers are amazing. So, if we can scratch some runs across, we're going to win a lot of ball games.' Relief success After lefty starter Eric Lauer tossed a successful three innings, the bullpen combined to score six shutout innings. Lauer surrendered a second-inning leadoff homer to Spencer Torkelson but struck out the side in the third inning to finish strong. Then Yariel Rodriguez, Brendon Little, Chad Green, Yimi Garcia and Jeff Hoffman (4-2) closed the door. Rodriguez pitched two innings with the others going one. Up next Jose Berrios (1-1) will start the series finale for Toronto, while the Tigers will counter with righty Jackson Jobe (3-0). This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 17, 2025. Blue Jays' John Schneider Sends Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Message After Red Sox Game

The Toronto Blue Jays completed an impressive series win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. Taking two of three from their American League East rivals, the Blue Jays improved to 15-16 on the season. Not only did the Bleu Jays secure a big series victory, but they did it with much more offensive prowess than had been on display for much of the season. After scoring seven runs in Wednesday's victory, Toronto scored just four on Thursday, but three of those came on one swing from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the eighth inning. Also homering in Tuesday's game, the right-handed slugger seems to be finding his power stroke. Speaking with reporters after the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider delivered a message on his All-Star first baseman. 'I said it last night… hopefully that gives you a little bit of momentum," Schneider said. "Vlad just took it a little further." Guerrero signed a 14-year, $500 million extension with the Blue Jays earlier this season. In his seventh MLB season, the 26-year-old has made four All-Star games and has two Silver Slugger awards. Also winning a Gold Glove in 2022, Guerrero has shown off his all-around game in Toronto. Advertisement Committing this money to Guerrero, the Blue Jays hope he can lead them to a deep playoff run. MLB Fans In Disbelief Over Aaron Judge, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. News

Entering Wednesday, the New York Yankees sit in a familiar place atop the American League East standings. With a 20-16 record, New York owns a 2.5 game lead over the second place Boston Red Sox. While they have gotten off to slower starts, both the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays remain in striking distance, sitting just 3.5 games back of New York. Once again, the Yankees have been led this season by two-time AL MVP Aaron Judge. The 6-foot-7 outfielder leads baseball in batting average (.412), home runs (12), RBIs (34), OBP (.503), SLG (.772) and OPS (1.275). New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge (99)© David Dermer-Imagn Images Judge's OPS entering Wednesday would be the 13th best in a single season in MLB history. Only Josh Gibson, Charlie Smith, Barry Bonds, Babe Ruth, Mule Suttles and Ted Williams have exceeded that mark for an entire year. Advertisement These other-worldly numbers from Judge sparked a comparison to Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who owns an OPS just two points better than Judge's slugging percentage. Guerrero signed a 14-year, $500 million extension with Toronto earlier this season, and has been underwhelming for much of the year. The news of his OPS narrowly edging out Judge's slugging percentage has fans in disbelief. "Insanity!" exclaimed one. "don't play me with now!" said another. "Aaron Judge GOAT," claimed a third. "Anyone that says Judge isn't the best in baseball is just flat out WRONG," one added. "Wow!" exclaimed another. "That's an incredible stat. Holy [expletive]!" Advertisement "And guess who is getting paid more," remarked one. "whats really crazy is that a .774 ops is actually a good ops," one pointed out.
