Editor's Letter: Celebrating Saudi Women, Creativity, and Cultural Evolution

Welcome to our annual Saudi issue, a themed edition of Vogue Arabia that pays homage to the Kingdom. If you might recall, our inaugural issue was published in June 2018, the month that women were allowed to start driving. Our cover – featuring HRH Princess Hayfa bint Abdullah Al Saud behind the wheel of a red convertible in the desert of Jeddah – was talked about globally, and it is still a favourite of mine. But so many things have changed since then… Saudi Arabia has done an incredible job in establishing its creative industries, and supporting art and fashion. While doing so, new policies and changes in mentalities have finally placed women at the centre of this cultural zeitgeist. I recently heard an impressive intervention by HRH Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud, the Saudi ambassador to the United States, that I believe sums it up perfectly: 'The women of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, we're not tokens. We're not boxes to tick. We're women who are dedicated to the development, not just of our country, but of our families, and our neighbourhoods. And if we thrive, ladies and gentlemen, I promise you the women of the world thrive, because we all deserve the path forward.' With a country bursting with talent – and spectacular landscapes – putting together this issue was an exciting creative challenge. We started at the Red Sea, against the scenic beauty of the Desert Rock Resort, where we profiled three young Saudi models taking Arab beauty to international runways. In Taif, we met Nora Alharthi, the female entrepreneur breaking glass ceilings and establishing her business in the male-dominated world of the rose industry. In Riyadh, we caught up with fashion designer Ahmed Hassan, cofounder of KML, one of the semi-finalists for the world-renowned LVMH Prize. And, we stopped by London to photograph the latest pre-fall trends on DJ Nooriyah, whose accolades include a historical performance at Glastonbury. Although I still remember visiting Saudi years back when the country didn't offer tourist visas, things now have changed drastically, with the Kingdom eager to welcome guests and proudly display its legacy and history. Personally, I was always greeted with a smile, as Saudis are known for their generous hospitality. Surely, this was the same level of welcome experienced by Georgina Rodríguez and Cristiano Ronaldo, the country's news-making residents. For our cover story, we joined Rodríguez as she got ready for her first-ever Met Gala in New York City, and invited football's biggest icon to conduct the intimate interview. Between coffee and hairspray, they discuss family life and the pros and cons of being in the spotlight, and look back at two eventful years of living in the Kingdom. I hope you enjoy reading.

‘What keeps me balanced is…': Deepika Padukone on 'dealing with difficult situations' amid feud with Sandeep Reddy Vanga

Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone talked about how she deals with difficult or complicated situations in a new interview from Sweden. She said in such situations she is able to listen to her inner voice which leads her towards peace. Her comments arrive amid her fallout with filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga over his film Spirit. Sandeep recently shared an angry tweet which many assume is for Deepika who has now been replaced by Triptii Dimri in the film. Amid this, Deepika was asked about what keeps her balanced in her interview with Vogue Arabia. She replied, 'What keeps me balanced is just being truthful, authentic. Whenever I'm faced with complicated or difficult situations, to be able to listen to my inner voice and just stand by decisions that really give me a lot of peace is when I feel most in equilibrium.' 'I just listen to my gut, to what feels right. I think it's easier said than done but I think it's when you shut out the noise around you and just listen to your gut. I think the answers are always there. Wanting to collaborate with people I know I'm going to have a good time working with, surrounding myself with family and friends, and being authentic is how I feel I'm able to find my balance,' also added the new mom about balancing personal and professional life. Deepika was at a Cartier event for its High Jewelry collection 'En Équilibre' in Stockholm, Sweden. While she did not comment directly on her fallout with Sandeep Reddy Vanga, many believe she dropped a subtle hint after Vanga's post went viral. On Monday, Vanga shared an angry tweet, without mentioning anyone's name, he also accused an actor of playing "dirty PR games". "When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) between us. But by doing this, You've 'DISCLOSED' the person that you are.... Putting down a Younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for? "As a filmmaker, I put years of hard work behind my craft & for me, filmmaking is everything. You didn't get it. You won't get it. You will never get it. Aisa karo.... Agli baar poori kahani bolna... kyunki mujhe jarra bhi farak nahi padtha. (Let's do one thing... next time tell the whole story... because I don't even care a bit) #dirtyPRgames," Vanga shared. Spirit stars Prabhas in the lead.

Video of matcha rave in Dubai sparks confusion online: 'I thought this was AI-generated'

A video of a rooftop matcha-themed dance party set against the Dubai skyline has gone viral, sparking questions. In the clip, a group of partygoers can be seen gently swaying to music, sipping matcha drinks, and sampling matcha ice cream, all while a live DJ spins tunes in the background. The video's caption read: 'And you thought matcha was boring?" It described the dance party overlooking Dubai's stunning skyline as 'electric' and asked viewers if they would "hit up the next one?' A post shared by Time Out Dubai (@timeoutdubai) has reached out to the organisers of the event. This story will be updated when a response is received. While the clip racked up thousands of views on Instagram and X, not everyone was sold on the 'rave" aspect of the party. Many users poked fun at the mellow vibes and questioned whether the hype matched the energy of an actual rave. 'I honestly thought this was AI-generated,' wrote one user. 'This is definitely not a rave, and I know this as an old-school raver,' a third added. Overall, most commenters seemed baffled by the concept of a matcha rave. "How are you making a rave around matcha? It's just a green tea," asked another confused viewer. Others were surprised that matcha stole the spotlight, rather than Dubai's viral pistachio-and-knafeh-filled chocolate bars, which recently took the internet by storm and sparked worldwide demand. Matcha and coffee raves are quickly becoming the latest 'Gen Z-approved alcohol-free movement in Dubai', according to a report by Vogue Arabia. The report stated that Dubai's elites are choosing to let go of weekend late nights, hangovers, and 'Sunday scaries' ahead of their packed working week and opting for a smarter and healthier alternative, with minimum side-effects. 'In a city that thrives on high-energy experiences, we're curating a new kind of luxury—one that fuels you, rather than drains you,' Ali Hassoun of PEAQ, Dubai's first social wellness club, told Vogue Arabia.

Deepika Padukone spills her secret to peace amid exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit: ‘Make decisions that really…'

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone is currently making headlines after her exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit. The departure stirred controversy, with the director subtly criticizing her for 'unprofessionalism' and playing 'dirty PR games.' Although the actress hasn't publicly responded to the controversy, she recently revealed her secret to finding peace. She shared that it is about trusting her inner voice and standing firm in her decisions. In a recent conversation with Vogue Arabia, Deepika Padukone talked about peace and difficult times amid controversy around her exit from Spirit. She revealed believing in staying balanced that comes from being truthful and authentic. The actress added, 'Whenever I'm faced with complicated situations or difficult situations, I think, to be able to listen to my inner voice and just make decisions and stand by decisions that really give me a lot of peace, is when I feel most in equilibrium.' Meanwhile, Deepika's exit from Spirit was due to creative and logistical differences as per reports. She demanded an 8-hours work day as she is balancing her motherhood and career simultaneously. She also reportedly asked for a good salary and the film's profit. Her demands didn't go well with director Sandeep Reddy Vanga and became the reason for her exit from the film. Soon after the actress' exit, makers announced that Triptii Dimri has been cast in the lead role opposite Prabhas. The film is all set to hit the theaters in October 2025 and will be released in 9 different languages. Meanwhile, on the work front, Deepika Padukone will next be seen in the much-awaited film King with Shah Rukh Khan and Suhana Khan. A source exclusively told Pinkvilla that SRK always planned to have the actress on board for the film. However, their dates weren't aligning as she was taking time off for her newborn baby. Now, with the delay in the filming of King, she has joined the project. The source also told us that she will be shooting in the second half of 2025. She will be seen in a 'full-length role' and not just a cameo.
