Son of murder victim Jason Hennessy Snr jailed for ‘squaring up' to armed gardai

The father-of-four admitted offences including violent disorder, dangerous driving and obstructing a garda drug search One of the sons of steakhouse murder victim Jason Hennessy Snr has been jailed for six months for a series of crimes after a court heard he became violent in a garda station cell, roaring: 'you'll have to drag me out.' Jason Hennessy Jnr (28) also 'squared up' to armed gardai who came to his west Dublin home with a warrant, shouting: 'you won't be searching this house.' Hennessy was sentenced at Blanchardstown District Court after he pleaded guilty to 15 charges brought for a litany of offences over a three-year period. The father-of-four admitted offences including violent disorder, dangerous driving and obstructing a garda drug search. Judge Catherine Hayden also banned him from driving for two years. Sergeant Ian Abbey told the court the incidents happened on dates between 2019 and 2022. He said gardai went with the armed support unit to Hennessy's home at Sheephill Avenue, Blanchardstown with a search warrant on May 18, 2019. Hennessy resisted the search and had to be restrained. He stood up and shouted abuse at the gardai, telling one to 'f**k off' and 'you won't be searching this house.' Jason Hennessy Jnr is on remand News in 90 Seconds - May 30th The garda told him to sit down, but Jason Hennessy stood and squared up to the garda, 'entered his personal space' and placed his head up to the officer's head. Gardai were engaged in a covert operation in relation to 'suspected criminal activity' in west Dublin on June 23, 2019 when they saw a blue Saab being driven by Hennessy, with passengers, followed by another vehicle. The Saab went through a red light at a junction at Blakestown Road. Armed support were called and the Saab turned back toward the direction of the gardai, travelling towards them. Hennessy drove back through the junction at high speed and on the wrong side of the road. Hennessy was arrested for threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour at Aldi, Mulhuddart village on July 19, 2019. Four days later, he was at Blanchardstown District when he called a garda a 'f**king tramp.' He was caught speeding at 93kph in a 60kph zone on Jan 23, 2020 and parking on a footpath on February 15. The following April 3 on Castlecurragh Road, Mulhuddart, Hennessy was stopped driving a Volkswagen Passat and had a child without a seatbelt in the back seat. Gardai stopped and searched Hennessy when they saw him among a group of men acting suspiciously outside the San Marino takeaway at Laurel Lodge shopping centre on May 8, 2020. When a phone was retrieved from his pocket, Hennessy became aggressive and threw it on the ground, breaking it. He became violent and had to be restrained and arrested for obstruction. While detained at Blanchardstown garda station the following June 22, a jailer carried out a routine check on Hennessy in his cell at 1am. Hennessy said 'you're a blond muppet, turn off the light.' He became very aggressive, and used a paper cup to throw water from the toilet, shouting at the garda, 'do you want water, you will have to drag me out'. He began throwing litter from his meal and was violent as he was removed from the cell, which had to be cleaned. When stopped driving at Corduff shops on February 5, 2022, Hennessy told the garda: 'You will do well in prison, you little faggot.' Hennessy, who had passengers in his car, was aggressive and made 'hand gestures' while children were nearby. He was already in custody when he came before the court. Defence solicitor Tertius Van Eeden said the violence in the case was at the 'low end of the scale.' Hennessy was now 'doing well in prison,' working out and 'keeping his head down.' He was 'in a good place mentally' now, considering the fact his father was 'brutally murdered in a Christmas Eve shooting in 2023,' Mr Van Eeden said. Hennessy had 15 previous convictions for offences including assault and violent disorder.

Behaviour of Louth motorist who collided with garda car ‘could have led to fatalities'

Josh Bell, Drumcar, Dunleer, admitted the offences which occurred at Peter Street and North Strand, Drogheda, after Judge Nicola Andrews said she would not reduce the charges to careless driving. Evidence was given that the Drogheda Port worker, who had neither insurance nor a licence, went through a stop sign at a pedestrian crossing while being pursued by Gardaí and that he later collided with the patrol car. The defendant, who has no previous convictions, paid for the damage. Sgt Dave O'Leary testified that at 1am on November 12, 2023, in Peter Street, the driver of a Volkswagen Passat, on seeing Gardaí, took off at speed. The car passed through a stop sign on a pedestrian crossing. There was no one crossing the road at the time, though people were nearby. The pursuit continued to North Strand. The Garda car had blue lights and siren operating. Mr Bell did eventually stop before taking off again which resulted in the two vehicles colliding. His car was seized. Sgt O'Leary continued that the defendant paid the Garda car repair bill of €1,780. Solicitor Ciarán Hughes said that his client was aged 18 at the time. He made a foolish error of judgement and made a poor decision on the night. He apologised. Mr Bell earned €450 per-week as a general operative in Drogheda Port and helped his father on the family farm. He enjoyed family support and was seeking leniency. Judge Andrews said that his behaviour could have led to fatalities. A €500 fine and two-year disqualification were marked on one of the dangerous driving charges. The facts were found proven on the other charges which were taken into consideration. Bail in the event of an appeal was set at a personal bond of €500.

Grandad helped carry out Gary Carey shooting after mobster ‘fell foul' of drugs gang

Patrick 'Fishy' Fitzgerald (48) bought, fuelled up and later burnt out a getaway car used by the hit team A Dublin grandfather and lifelong criminal helped carry out the failed murder of Gary Carey after the target had 'fallen foul' of an international drugs gang. Patrick 'Fishy' Fitzgerald (48), of Glenties Park in Finglas, bought, fuelled up and later burnt out a getaway car used by the hit team that fired 10 shots at Carey outside a Ballyfermot home almost four years ago. The Central Criminal Court heard that the victim was targeted by a west Dublin gang involved in serious crimes 'up to and including murder' and died after a separate shooting the following year. His daughters today recalled the trauma of seeing the 'strongest man in the world' being carried away by first responders after the shooting and described how their lives have since been filled with 'fear and horror'. Earlier, prosecution counsel Ronan Kennedy SC took Detective Sergeant Ronan McDermott through the facts of the case. The court was told that at 7.30pm on November 17, 2021, Gary Carey (41) was and exiting a driveway on Ballyfermot Crescent in his Volkswagen Passat when his path was blocked by a black 07-D Opel Zafira carrying two occupants. Ten shots were fired at Carey through the windscreen of the car, striking him twice in the torso. He fled through a house and over the rear wall, hiding out in another garden until emergency services arrived. Patrick Fitzgerald He was rushed to hospital where one bullet was removed but another remained lodged in his torso because it was deemed too high risk to remove. He spent over a month in hospital being treated for 'significant internal damage' and fled to Spain after being discharged. The court was told that shortly after he returned home from Spain he was shot in June 2022 in a separate incident and passed away on August 5. The Opel Zafira was burnt out nearby on Ballyfermot Parade with two handguns recovered inside while a secondary getaway car, a gold 07-D Toyota Avensis, brought the hit team from the scene and was burnt out on Willow Park Crescent in Ballymun that night. Patrick 'Fishy' Fitzgerald and deceased drug lord Gary 'the Canary' Carey News in 90 Seconds - May 27th Det Sgt McDermott agreed that a 'painstaking investigation' was carried out involving the taking of witness statements and harvesting CCTV footage around the city. Gardaí established that in the days before the shooting the Opel Zafira was bought for €750 while the Toyota Avensis was sourced for €800. Gardaí connected Fitzgerald to the purchases through a phone used by him and he was also captured on CCTV driving the cars around Finglas in the week leading up to the shooting. Mr Kennedy also said the defendant was linked to a third car, a blue Audi A4, which had been bought for €500 exactly a month before the murder bid. This car was used when meeting with the legitimate sellers of the getaway cars and was described as the 'logistics vehicle used to execute the planning'. Gary Carey The court was also told that Fitzgerald fuelled up the Toyota Avensis the day before the gun attack and burnt it out within three hours of the shooting. Det Sgt McDermott agreed that the defendant was 'engaged in this operation by an organised criminal group based in the Ballyfermot and Clondalkin areas' which is involved in the large-scale importation of drugs both nationally and internationally as well as 'firearms offence up to and including murder'. He also said that Carey was a person known to gardaí who had 'fallen foul' of this criminal gang. The court was told Fitzgerald has 72 previous convictions dating to 1999 including aggravated burglary, false imprisonment, assault, theft and public order. He is currently serving a seven-and-a-half-year sentence over a home invasion in south Dublin that he carried out while on bail for the attempted murder charge. Bernard Condon SC, defending, said his client had struggled with alcohol and drugs in his 20s and 30s but had rehabilitated over a decade ago. Mr Condon said a 'family issue' in 2020 caused 'some difficulty in his life' and resulted in him relapsing. He said his client is also a father of four children as well as a grandfather. In her victim impact statement, Carey's partner Nicola Doonan said: 'We had to move from our family home with our son and live separate lives for our own safety.' In a joint victim impact statement, Carey's daughters said their family had been left devastated ever since 'selfish people' chose to hurt their dad. They recalled the trauma of witnessing 'our dad, the strongest man in the world, being carried by police' and being unable to reach him. The court was told their lives now hold 'pain, fear and trauma' having once been full of 'joy, love, security and protection'. They added that they would carry anger, fear and horror for the rest of their lives, and that they hoped the justice system would recognise this. Ms Justice Eileen Creedon said she would sentence the accused in July and remanded him in custody. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years' imprisonment.
