Conor Purcell hits career-low 65 as Leona Maguire finishes well off pace

The Dublin rookie (27) arrived at Mission Hills looking to build on a season's best tie for 15th in the Volvo China Open. He went into the final round tied for 60th on level par but fed off some recent good form and fired a bogey-free 65 for his lowest score on the DP World Tour to tie for 20th on seven-under. The former Walker Cup star finished ten strokes behind England's Marco Penge, who shot 67 to win his maiden DP World Tour title by three strokes from American Sean Crocker and Norway's Kristoffer Reitan. But after earning €26,181 and valuable Race to Dubai points with back-to-back top-20 finishes, Purcell's looking to push on in this week's Turkish Airlines Open. 'The game has been feeling good lately,' said Purcell, who was 187th in the points list after six missed cuts in his first eight events but now lies 127th. 'Getting competitive reps consistently is important, and I'm just looking to keep the ball rolling now in Turkey.' Like Purcell, Penge (26) is a HotelPlanner Tour graduate, and he's now set for his third Major appearance at next month's PGA Championship. His win helped him finish third in the Asian Swing rankings to earn one of three spots at Quail Hollow alongside Japan's Keita Nakajima and Spain's Eugenio Chacarra, who finished first and second in the list. 'This obviously means the world to me,' Penge said. 'It's something that I've always dreamt of achieving – winning on the biggest stage.' Leona Maguire's quest for a maiden Major win continues after she tied for 68th in The Chevron Championship in Texas. After carding rounds of 75 and 71 to make the two-over cut on the mark at The Club at Carlton Woods, she closed with two 75s to finish on eight over.

Ashun Wu ends 10-year wait to seal sensational storybook victory at China Open

Ashun Wu turned back the clock in sensational fashion, capturing the Volvo China Open title for a second time—almost ten years to the day since his last triumph on home soil. The 39-year-old Chinese star delivered a vintage final round, carding a six-under 65 to post a winning score of 14-under-par, edging out England's Jordan Smith by a single stroke to claim his fifth career title on the DP World Tour. Trailing by three shots at the turn, Wu flipped the script with a fiery stretch of five birdies in eight holes, while overnight leader Eugenio Chacarra of Spain cooled off at the worst possible moment. Smith's closing 67 earned him solo second, followed by Germany's Yannik Paul in third. Chacarra finished in a tie for fourth with local favourites Haotong Li and Zecheng Dou, showcasing China's growing presence in world golf. It's a sweet comeback for Wu, who narrowly lost his tour card last season after finishing 115th in the Race to Dubai standings—just one spot shy of safety. Now, with this victory, he's secured full DP World Tour status through 2027 and reasserted himself as a force in front of an adoring home crowd. "It's very special," Wu said, visibly moved. "Ten years ago I won this event in Shanghai, and to come back and do it again—it's a great story. A great week. I'm proud to win my country's Open. It's very, very exciting." Conditions were anything but easy. "The wind flipped directions today, so the front nine was tricky. I just told myself to stay patient. One birdie and one bogey on the front. Then the back nine came alive." "Five birdies coming home—it felt amazing. And playing in Shanghai, in front of my home crowd, it gave me a lot of confidence. This city brings me luck." It was a win wrapped in nostalgia and national pride, and a big statement from a veteran who clearly isn't done yet. Final Leaderboard A. Wu (CHN) – 68 • 70 • 67 • 65 = 270 J. Smith (ENG) – 68 • 69 • 67 • 67 = 271 Y. Paul (GER) – 68 • 68 • 67 • 69 = 272 E. Chacarra (ESP) – 65 • 67 • 69 • 72 = 273 Z. Dou (CHN) – 70 • 65 • 68 • 70 = 273 L. Home hero Wu Ashun wows Shanghai crowds by charging to China Open win

Home favourite Wu Ashun charged to a second Volvo China Open triumph on Sunday, a decade after his first, as five back-nine birdies propelled him to a final-round 65 and a one-stroke victory in Shanghai. Advertisement The Chinese veteran rolled back the years to thrill packed home galleries at Anting Golf Club as he carded just one bogey, on the fifth, against seven birdies, to finish at 14-under par 270. It was enough to give the 39-year-old a one-stroke margin over playing partner Jordan Smith of England, who had a 67, as overnight leaders Eugenio Chacarra and Li Haotong faltered after both began at 12-under. Germany's Yannick Paul was third, two strokes behind Wu on 272, after signing for a two-under 69. 'It's very special,' Wu said as he celebrated his fifth win on the European-based tour – his maiden triumph had come in the same event at the Tomson course across Shanghai in 2015. Advertisement 'That was 10 years ago and coming back to Shanghai, I win again. I mean, it's amazing,' Wu added after his first DP World Tour victory since the 2022 Kenya Open.

Ashun Wu rallies to win China Open, 10 years after first title at event

SHANGHAI — Ashun Wu made a Sunday charge on the back nine with five birdies for a 6-under 65 that enabled him to overcome a four-shot deficit and win the Volvo China Open for the second time. The victory came 10 years after the 39-year-old Wu first won the China Open. It was his fifth career victory on the DP World Tour. Haotong Li and Eugenio Chacarra of Spain, who began the final round tied for the lead at Enhance Anting Golf Club, each closed with a 1-over 72. Wu was three shots behind Chacarra when he made the turn and he promptly ran off three birdies in a four-hole stretch. The Spaniard, playing behind him, had three bogeys on the back nine and fell back. Wu finished on 14 under to win by one shot over Jordan Smith of England, who birdied his last hole for a 67. Yannik Paul of Germany shot 69 and finished alone in third, while Li and Chacarra shared fourth place with Zecheng Dou (70). The European tour stays in China one more week for the Hainan Classic.
