Volvo turns heads after unveiling cutting-edge EV with jaw-dropping capabilities: 'This is a pleasant surprise'

Volvo's new ES90 electric vehicle boasts an impressive 435 miles of range and some surprising charging technology, according to Inside EVs. The car's battery operates at 800 volts, which Volvo claims will allow it to go from a 10% to 80% charge in only 20 minutes. Other manufacturers have started moving to 800-volt batteries as well, including Porsche, GM, Tesla, Lucid, Stellantis, and Hyundai, though it remains a feature for higher-end models. The benefit of fast charging times depends entirely on the availability of supporting chargers. Electric vehicle infrastructure continues to improve, so even if fast charging isn't available along your current routes, odds are it's on the way. "The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort, creating a true premium Volvo car designed to elevate your quality of life," said Volvo CEO Jim Rowan. Besides a sense of luxury, electric vehicles are a key way in which people can reduce atmospheric pollution. Consumer road travel produces a lot of pollution, and switching to an EV can help bring that amount down a lot. Gas-powered cars also pump out a lot of localized pollution, which is bad for health. Luckily, electricity is cheaper than gas, resulting in cheaper ownership costs after switching to an EV. If you're ready to make the leap, check out our electric vehicle guide. While the price was undisclosed, Volvo also recently unveiled the EX30 Cross Country, which should be a bit more affordable. The community reception to the ES90 has been generally positive. "Wow is this a pleasant surprise!" said one commenter. "This just catapulted the ES90 from a non-contender to a potential top contender." "The ES90 is looking pretty exciting," said another. "I'm looking forward to seeing this tech make its way into other Volvo EVs." If you were going to purchase an EV, which of these factors would be most important to you? Volvo's sleek ES90 is a fast-charging, long-range traveler

STOCKHOLM — The Volvo ES90 will charge faster and go farther than any electric vehicle in the automaker's lineup. It will also be the sleekest Volvo in the company's nearly 100-year history. Volvo said the ES90 full-electric large premium car blends characteristics from three vehicle types: the elegance of a sedan, the flexibility of a fastback as well as the spaciousness and higher ground clearance of an SUV. By catering to all three, Volvo says the ES90 'carves out a new space for itself' putting the car 'in a class of its own.' When asked about the risks of trying to be three things at once, Volvo Chief Product and Strategy Officer Erik Severinson recognized the potential dilemma. 'Is it a car for everyone or a car for no one?' he said when considering the question. 'I think we have found a really good balance,' he told Automotive News Europe. 'Design-wise, we managed to keep it in a package that is appealing to sedan customers as well as a crossover or fastback customers. The ES90's proportions translate into a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.25, which is the best ever for an automaker. By comparison, the Porsche Taycan full-electric luxury sedan has a Cd rating of 0.22 (the lower number the better the aerodynamics). Sign up for the Automotive News Europe Focus on Electrification newsletter, a weekly wrap-up of the latest electric vehicle news, including interviews and global EV sales data. As a result, Volvo says the ES90 will have a driving range of up to 700 km (435 miles) under the WLTP testing cycle — and it will charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes, using a 350-kilowatt fast-charging station. That is a 30 percent improvement over Volvo's flagship electric SUV, the EX90, which was launched last year and rides on the same SPA2 architecture. The upgrade is partly because of the integration of adaptive charging software from Breathe Battery Technologies. Volvo is the first automaker to get access to the British startup's patented algorithm-enabled charging software, Breathe Charge. The ES90 is also the first Volvo that can add 300 km [186 miles] of range in just 10 minutes. That is up from about 180 km in 10 minutes with the 400-volt system Volvo offers on the rest of its EVs. By comparison, the Porsche Taycan can add 315 km of range in 10 minutes using a fast-charging station that offers at least 320 kW of power. Along with the Taycan, the ES90's rivals will include the electric BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE, neither of which offer 800-volt charging. Vehicles that have 800-volt charging capability include the Tesla Cybertruck, Lotus Eletre and Emeya, Audi E-tron GT, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Order books are open for ES90 in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K. More markets will follow. The car will start at €71,990 in Germany. Volvo will build the ES90 at its factory in Chengdu, China, where it also makes the EX90 electric flagship SUV. Production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year. Deliveries will begin in the fourth quarter of this year and continue into the first quarter of 2026. Severinson expects China to account for a leading percentage the ES90's sales, but he declined to give a percentage figure. He expects the U.K. to be another key market because there are no additional tariffs on cars built in China and solid in the country. Volvo's China-built cars sold in the European Union are subject to the bloc's new higher tariff regime for Chinese BEVs. For Volvo, the tariff is 28.8 percent, comprising the EU's usual 10 percent import duty plus an extra 18.8 percent charge meant to offset the Chinese government's subsidies to EV makers. Severinson said Volvo realizes that it can't pass along that entirety of the tariffs to customers, however, since it competes in the premium segment it has more wiggle room on price than a mass market automaker, but flexibility is highly dependent on the market. Severinson said Volvo is evaluating whether to sell the ES90 in the U.S., where China-made cars face a tariff of 20 percent after the Trump administration imposed a 10 percent duty on Chinese imports on top of the 10 percent import tax it implemented in February. CEO Jim Rowan said the ES90 underlines Volvo's position as 'an industry leader in software-defined cars that harness the power of core computing.' The ES90 is the first Volvo with a centralized system powered by a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin configuration capable of more than 500 trillion operations per second. When Nvidia debuted Drive AGX Orin in 2019, it said the system-on-chip was developed to enable scaling from Level 2 advanced driver assistance to Level 5 full-autonomous driving. The ES90's safety system includes seven cameras, five radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors and a lidar, which work together to help the driver avoid collisions. Inside, the ES90 is equipped to make the rear-seat passengers as cozy as possible. The car's long wheelbase of 3100 mm meters – more than 10 feet – provides generous legroom for the rear passengers. People riding in the back also have power seats that can recline or be made warmer or cooler. The ES90's electrochromic panoramic roof lets plenty of natural light enter the cabin while providing nearly 100 percent protection from ultraviolet rays. In addition, with a touch of a button the transparency of the glass can be adjusted to increase or decrease sunlight The ES90 will compete in Europe's large premium segment, which after the first month of 2025 was led by the BMW 5 Series, followed by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6. The top-selling full-electric cars in the segment is the BMW i5, followed by the Mercedes EQE and the Audi E-tron. All three EVs are ahead of the combined sales of the Volvo S90 and V90 sedan and station wagon. After one month, large premium sales were up 29 percent to 16,008, according to market researcher Dataforce. In 2024, large premium sales rose 9.5 percent to 188,262, led by the A6, followed by the E-Class and 5 Series. Combined sales of the S90 and V90 dropped 25 percent to 8,335, according to Dataforce. In the U.S., the S90 is in the large luxury segment, where it finished 2024 in fourth place behind the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S Class and Lexus LS. Sales of the S90 fell 6.5 percent to 1,896 last year, according to the Automotive News Data Center. Sales for the segment were down 7.5 percent to 28,288. Vehicles that have 800-volt charging capability include the Tesla Cybertruck, Lotus Eletre and Emeya, Audi E-tron GT, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. The ES90 is Volvo's first full-electric luxury sedan. It shares the automaker's SPA2 underpinnings with the EX90 flagship electric SUV. The ES90 and EX90 are the only models planned to use the company's SPA2 platform as Volvo will switch to the third generation of the architecture, SPA3, starting in 2026 with the EX60 midsize SUV. The ES90 is the sixth full electric model in Volvo's range. The others are the EX90, EM90 luxury van, EX30 small SUV, EX40 compact SUV and the EC40 compact crossover. Volvo's electric models all start with an 'E' to distinguish them from combustion models, which start with XC for SUVs, S for sedans and V for station wagons. Volvo previously aimed to be an electric-only brand by 2030, but last September it adjusted those plans, saying that battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars would account for at least 90 percent of its sales by then. The remainder will be mild hybrids, which mostly rely on a combustion engine. The ES90 luxury sedan is 5000 mm long, 1942 mm wide, 1547 mm tall with a wheelbase of 3102 mm and a maximum ground clearance of 184 mm The ES90 will offer three electric powertrains: single motor, twin motor and twin motor performance. The Single Motor, which is rear-wheel drive, offers 245 kilowatts, which is 329 hp. The maximum torque is 480 newton meters (354 pounds-feet). It can go 0 to 100 (62 mph) in 6.9 seconds and add 275 km of range in 10 minutes on a fast charger of at least 350 kW. This variant has a 92-kilowatt-hour, CATL-sourced lithium-ion battery. This variant has a WLTP range of 650 km. The Twin Motor, which is all-wheel drive, offers a 333 kW (442 hp) and 670 newton meters (494 pounds-feet) of torque. It can go 0-100 kph in 5.5 seconds and add 300 km in 10 minutes on a fast charger. It has a 106-kWh battery from CALT. The range is 700 km on a single charge, according to WLTP. The Twin Motor Performance drivetrain offers 500 kW of power (670 hp) and 870 newton meters (635 pounds-feet) of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 4 seconds and add 300 km in 10 minutes on a fast charger. It has a 106-kWh battery from CALT. The WLTP range is 700 km. The Volvo ES90 will charge faster and go farther than any electric vehicle in the automaker's lineup.

Volvo ES90: An all-electric sedan that defines the future

Volvo has been slowly adding to its all-electric fleet, and now the Swedish automaker is ready to unveil its latest and greatest model. The 2025 Volvo ES90 comes designed with sustainability in mind, which both pushes the manufacturer towards its zero-emissions goal and offers transparency to consumers. At a glance, it's clear that Volvo has pulled out all the stops in developing one of the most advanced EVs to ever grace Volvo ES90 follows in the footsteps of the EX90 SUV by utilizing the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack. The Superset features the hardware and software modules that will underpin Volvo EVs going forward. The ES90 features a centralized system capable of performing more than 500 trillion operations per second. As a result, the ES90 will utilize over-the-air updates to both improve and grow functionalities within the EV in the future. 'The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time,' said Anders Bell, Volvo chief engineering and technology officer. 'Built on our state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, the ES90 puts safety at the forefront.' Ride comfort comes standard thanks to Volvo's third-generation electric motors and dual-chamber air suspension paired with an active chassis. Per Volvo, the ES90's cabin is the quietest ever from the Swedish automaker and also comes equipped with advanced air purification technology. The Volvo ES90 is the automaker's second all-electric model to feature Safe Space Technology. The EV's safety systems and overall design were developed based on real-world traffic accidents and safety knowledge. The electric sedan continuously collects real-time data on the road that allows Volvo engineers to improve safety functions. The ES90's system is also capable of detecting and recognizing when the driver's attention leaves the road, so the EV itself can step in as needed. While Rear Occupant Systems aren't exactly uncommon, Volvo's is particularly sensitive, reportedly being able to sense something as minor as a baby upcoming Volvo ES90 features 800V technology designed to deliver faster charging speeds and provide a longer driving range. The ES90 will offer up to 435 miles on a single charge, putting it on the upper end of the entire EV industry. Not only that, but the ES90's hardware is bi-directional, so you can use the sedan to power your home or reduce electricity costs by returning power to the grid. On top of its 435-mile range, the Volvo ES90 also offers blazing fast charging speeds. Thanks to Volvo's 800V technology, the ES90 can add roughly 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging. 'Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification,' said Anders Bell. 'It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster, and go further on a single charge.' The Volvo ES90 will come with three powertrain options, each of which takes advantage of the Swedish automaker's latest tech developments. The entry-level Single Motor model comes in rear-wheel drive and features a 92 kWh battery. This base trim pumps out 329 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. That kind of power puts the ES90 sedan at 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. The Twin Motor version attaches an electric motor on the front and rear, which means all-wheel drive is standard. In terms of performance, the mid-range ES90 brings 442 horsepower and 494 lb-ft of torque to the road. The Twin Motor trim comes equipped with a 106 kWh battery and strikes 60 mph in just 5.3 you want peak performance, the Twin Motor Performance model is right up your alley, with a standard all-wheel drivetrain and a 106 kWh battery. The range-topping trim delivers 670 horsepower and 635 lb-ft of torque that propels the electric sedan to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Regardless of powertrain, the Volvo ES90 boasts a top speed of 112 mph. All models can charge from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes at a 350 kW charging station. View the 14 images of this gallery on the original article The Volvo ES90 combines the best of both worlds by pairing the simplicity of a sedan with the spaciousness and elevated seating of an SUV. The latest EV rolls out on a 196.9-inch wheelbase, which means passengers will have plenty of space. The ventilated rear seats can be reclined individually and feature a lounge armrest. An electrochromic panoramic roof can let light into the cabin or darken to create a shade. Sustainable materials and colors come inspired by Scandinavian nature. In terms of tech, the ES90 features Digital Key Plus, allowing drivers to access the vehicle from their smartphone. A 14.5-inch touchscreen display and nine-inch driver display come standard, as does a head-up display for both improved safety and convenience. The Volvo ES90 also includes a 25-speaker Bower & Wilkins premium audio system that provides a pristine listening experience. The infotainment system itself utilizes Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies. Google services, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play Store, come built in. 5G connectivity also comes built in, allowing for ultra-fast data transfer and Volvo ES90 is manufactured at one of the Swedish automaker's climate neutral production facilities using 100% renewable energy. The vehicle itself is made with 29% recycled aluminum, 18% recycled steel, and 16% recycled polymers and bio-based materials. The 800V technology provides improved efficiency through electric driving and the charging system itself. The Volvo ES90 features the automaker's battery passport that utilizes blockchain technology to trace raw materials and improve transparency for customers. The addition of the ES90 to Volvo's lineup is just the automaker's latest step toward full electrification, and puts the Swedish company closer to its goal of net zero emissions by 2040. At a glance, the Volvo ES90 seems like a run-of-the-mill all-electric luxury car, but the tech that underpins it is so much more. With a range exceeding 400 miles, a powerful processing center, and charging speeds few automakers can match, the ES90 could very well be on the edge of the next generation of EVs. While I'm holding out hope that solid-state batteries will actually increase EV range dramatically and make their way to mass production within the next few years, Volvo's latest entry is a solid step forward. The New Volvo ES90 Is a Stylish Electric Sedan With an SUV's Stance

The newest addition to Volvo's growing stable of full-electric vehicles is a clever remix of the brand's familiar design elements and new technologies. Meet the all-new 2026 Volvo ES90. A tall sedan with an SUV twist, this class-bending vehicle is expected to arrive sometime next year boasting impressive range and wicked-fast charging thanks to its 800-volt EV architecture. The ES90's crossover design isn't dissimilar to its Swedish cousin, the Polestar 2. Both EVs blend a sedan's proportions and three-box roofline with the utility of a liftback rear hatch and SUV scale. However, with its 122.1-inch wheelbase within a 196.9-inch bumper-to-bumper stretch, the ES90 is significantly larger than the P2 in every dimension. That makes this less a Tesla Model 3 competitor and more an alternative to the full-size Model S, though even here the Swede stands apart with its more upright proportions -- owed to its SUV-esque 7.1 inches of ground clearance and elevated seating position -- and slightly longer wheelbase. For the best idea of how big the Volvo will be, you could pop over to your local Toyota dealer and have a peep at the Crown, which is a similarly sized but slightly different take on the sedan-utility-vehicle chimera. Volvo's design language is well established, so there aren't too many surprises to be found in the ES90's design. Its essentially a sedan variant of the EX90 electric SUV, from the "Thor's Hammer" headlamp light signature to the minimalist interior with its clever use of premium, sustainable materials. The rear end, however, is where you'll find my favorite design detail. Just above the horizontal C-shaped tail lights -- a hallmark of the brand's sedans -- you'll find vertical LED segments flanking the rear glass, a nod that echoes and links the ES90 to the design of Volvo's SUVs. Beneath the rear liftgate, the ES90 boasts 14.97 cubic feet of cargo space that expands to 25.89 cubes when the rear seats fold flat to accommodate bulky items. That's joined by a 0.78 cubic foot frunk under the hood. That's about the size of a large backpack, which isn't much, but serves as a nice cubby to keep a charging cable or roadside emergency kit tucked out of the way. Like the EX90, the ES90 has a prominent lidar hump at the top of its windshield both powering and drawing attention to the brand's next-generation driver assistance technology. It's a bit of overkill for today's safety features, the automaker told me previously at the EX90 debut, but this "Volvo for Life" approach provides future-ready overhead for tomorrow's safety technologies and over-the-air updates that may come over the lifetime of the EV. The lidar sensor is joined by five radar arrays, eight cameras and a dozen ultrasonic sensors located around the exterior feeding data to the collision mitigation, pedestrian safety, lane keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control features today, but may eventually help power more automated driver aid systems down the road. The ES90 is also outfitted with interior radar and camera sensors that are used to power the driver alertness monitoring system and full-cabin occupant detection. The latter, I'm told, is submillimeter-scale sensitive and able to detect even "the soft breathing of a sleeping baby" in the back seat and alert a forgetful parent leaving the vehicle. Prospective owners will have their choice of three different configurations when spec'ing their ES90: Single Motor, Dual Motor and Dual Motor Performance. The Single Motor setup mates a 92 kilowatt-hour battery pack with a 245-kilowatt motor on the rear axle, delivering around 329 horsepower, 354 pound-feet of torque and a 0 to 60 mph sprint in 6.7 seconds. The Dual Motor config installs a 130 kW motor on the front axle and a 300 kW unit at the rear, powering both with a larger 106 kWh battery pack. Total output climbs to 442 hp and 494 lb-ft of torque, while the 0-60 hustle drops to 5.3 seconds. Finally, Dual Motor Performance turns up the wick with 220 kW and 280 kW for the front and rear axle motors, which works out to 670 total hp and 635 lb-ft of twist. The quickest configuration of the trio launches to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Volvo estimates that the ES90 will cruise up to 404 miles with the smaller battery or 435 miles on the big pack, but that's on the more generous European WLTP testing cycle. US EPA estimates are still forthcoming, more demanding and usually end up around 10% lower. The ES90 will be the first Volvo car to make use of an 800-volt version of the brand's SPA2 EV architecture, which comes with the advantages of improved efficiency and faster charging compared to the 400-volt underpinnings of the EX90. Volvo claims the Single Motor electric crossover will be able to charge from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes at a 300-kilowatt DC fast charging station or a 350 kW plug for Dual Motor models. The ES90 will also arrive "hardware ready" for bidirectional charging at home and with support for plug-and-charge payment for more convenient charging at public stations on the road. Globally, the ES90 will feature a Combined Charging System port for AC and DC fast charging. The automaker hasn't announced whether it'll use CCS or the North American Charging Standard in the US, but (like the EX90 already does) it will certainly support both connections and Tesla's Supercharger network via adapters. Inside, Volvo's minimalist and airy Scandinavian design is highlighted by an optional electrochromic glass roof that goes from 99% opaque to transparent with the touch of a button. The EV's spartan dashboard is home to a 14.5-inch central touch display, a 9-inch digital instrument cluster and, invisible to all but the driver, a windshield projected head-up display. Infotainment duties are handled by the ES90's Google Built-in software suite, which makes native use of Google Maps for navigation, Google Assistant for voice command and search and the Google Play Store for finding and downloading all sorts of music and media streaming apps. For those who'd rather bring their own apps, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay phone mirroring are supported. An iPhone, Apple Watch or Android phone can also be used to unlock and start the EV via the Digital Key Plus feature. Meanwhile, Google Home integration allows easy integration with tech outside of the car. Volvo says the ES90 will have the brand's quietest cabin ever. To fill the silence, shoppers will have their pick of three audio system options with the top spec Bowers & Wilkins rig boasting 25-speakers, 1,610 watts of amplification, Dolby Atmos playback and the automaker's new Abbey Road Studio Mode, which I was able to go ears-on with last year. The 2026 Volvo ES90 will be the sixth full-electric vehicle in the automaker's global portfolio, joining the newly renamed EX40 and EC40, the compact EX30, the Chinese-market EM90 electric minivan and the flagship EX90 SUV. European drivers will get the first crack at the new ES90 when the order books open today. The automaker says that reservations will open in more markets "later this year and into 2026," so it may be a while before you'll be able to reserve one in North America (and longer still before the first examples arrive.) In the meanwhile, watch this space for updates on US pricing and range estimates.
