Rahul-Tejashwi ‘yatra' against SIR postponed
Patna: The much-publicised "Vote Adhikar Yatra," which was to be jointly launched by leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Bihar assembly opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav , has been postponed due to "unavoidable reasons". The yatra, originally scheduled for Aug, was intended to raise awareness about voting rights and "expose" the functioning of the Election Commission. "Information was issued to the media on Monday regarding the 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' programme, but now the yatra has been postponed due to unavoidable reasons," read a letter issued by RJD state principal general secretary Ranvijay Sahu. "This notice should be considered void until the announcement of a new date," the letter added. However, Tejashwi clarified that the decision to defer the yatra followed the death of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha founder and former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren. "We had to reschedule the yatra programme due to the death of the former Jharkhand CM," Tejashwi told reporters on Tuesday, adding that a revised schedule would be announced soon. The campaign was being widely seen as a launchpad for the opposition's election drive and a means to energise party workers across the state. The sudden postponement, however, has sparked questions about the rationale behind the decision. "We don't understand the reason behind its postponement. The JMM leader died on Monday and the Jharkhand govt declared three days of state mourning, ending on Aug 6. But the yatra was to begin on Aug 10. So, the postponement move looks strange," said an analyst.

Patna: The much-anticipated 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' of Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, originally scheduled to begin on August 10 in Bihar, has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) officially announced the postponement through a letter (No. 168, dated August 4, 2025) issued by its state office, citing "unavoidable reasons" behind the decision. The death of a former Chief Minister of Jharkhand is believed to be the primary reason behind the deferment, sources said. The party has urged supporters and officials to consider the previous schedule cancelled until a new date is announced. The revised schedule of the yatra will be communicated in due course. As per the earlier plan, the first phase of the yatra was to commence from Sasaram in Rohtas district on August 10 and culminate in Narpatganj in Araria district on August 19, covering several districts across Bihar. Jointly organised by Congress and RJD, the yatra was being projected as a people's movement for voter rights and a direct protest against the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of the Election Commission. The two opposition parties also planned to use this platform to attack both the Modi government at the Centre and the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on various election-related issues. Leaders from both parties had termed the yatra as the beginning of their electoral campaign for the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. It was designed not only to voice opposition to recent electoral roll deletions under SIR but also to galvanise support and re-energise the Mahagathbandhan cadre ahead of the polls. Party insiders said the announcement of the yatra had already created a buzz within the alliance, with grassroots workers and ticket aspirants gearing up to participate in large numbers. For many local leaders, it was a crucial opportunity to showcase strength and influence in front of top leadership. Now, with the program postponed, political attention will shift to the rescheduled dates, which are expected to be strategically aligned with future election planning and regional developments.

The BJP has sharply criticised Tejashwi, alleging that holding two voter ID cards is a criminal offence and demanding strict action against him. Meanwhile, Yadav confirmed that the RJD's planned "Vote Adhikar Yatra" has been postponed following the demise of Shibu Soren. "There has been a schedule change, but the new date for the Yatra will be announced soon," he said. Speaking about Shibu Soren's death, Yadav expressed deep sorrow. 'We received the sad news yesterday. We are now heading to Ranchi to pay our last respects. Shibu Soren ji fought for the poor, the underprivileged, and especially for tribal rights. He was also a long-time ally of my father and the RJD-JMM alliance. His passing is a political loss for the nation, and we offer our full condolences to his family.' Yadav is expected to join other national leaders at Nemra village in Jharkhand on Tuesday, where Soren's last rites will be performed.
