New sabotage derails Russian locomotive near Ukraine
A diesel locomotive derailed in Russia's Belgorod Region on Friday morning after an explosive device planted under the tracks damaged the rails, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. The incident follows what Moscow described as two Ukrainian 'terrorist attacks' on railroad infrastructure last week in the border regions of Bryansk and Kursk, which killed seven people and injured more than 100, including children. 'According to preliminary information, there were no casualties as a result of the explosive device planted under the rails. Train traffic was delayed for 2.5 hours. But now all trains are already running according to schedule,' Gladkov wrote in a post on his Telegram channel at around 6:50am. Repair crews were quickly dispatched to restore the affected section in the Prokhorovsky District of the region, the governor said, noting that he had been personally affected by the delays. 'My train only reached Prokhorovka due to the bombing of the railway tracks,' he said in a video message. 'Thank God that no one was injured, but there is damage.' On Wednesday, a similar case of railway sabotage occurred in Voronezh Region near the Ukrainian border, halting rail traffic and delaying more than 20 trains. Moscow has blamed Kiev for the recent string of incidents, following a ramp-up in Ukrainian drone raids and other attacks on Russian territory. President Vladimir Putin called the deadly train sabotage in the two border regions 'undoubtedly a terrorist act,' aimed at disrupting direct US-backed peace talks between the two countries.

Russian weapons plant hit by drones in Tambov Oblast, media reports attacks across country
Editor's Note: This is a developing story and is being updated. Drones struck a Russian military plant in Michurinsk, Tambov Oblast, in the early hours of June 6, according to media outlets in Russia. Attacks were also reported in Russia's Saratov, Moscow, Tula, Belgorod, and Kaluga oblasts. The Kyiv Independent could not verify these reports at the time of publication. The JSC Progress Plant in the city of Michurinsk in Tambov Oblast came under fire overnight, Russian Telegram news channels reported, citing local residents. A drone allegedly hit the plant's workshop, causing a fire. Russian officials have not yet commented on the attack. The JSC Progress Plant produces high-tech aviation and missile control systems, along with equipment for gas and oil pipelines. The plant was reportedly hit in a previous attack in December 2024. On the same night, Russian outlets also reported that an oil refinery in Saratov Oblast came under attack. The Kristal Plant, which supplies fuel to the Engels-2 military airfield, was engulfed in flames after a drone strike. Ukraine has targeted the facility in past attacks. A train derailed in Belgorod Oblast after an explosive device detonated under the tracks, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov claimed. Part of the track was damaged, but there were no casualties, he said. In the Russian capital, Mayor Sergey Sobyanin claimed that air defense units repelled 10 drones bound for Moscow. Sobyanin said that emergency services had been dispatched to the sites of the fallen wreckage, but did not disclose information regarding any damage. Kaluga Oblast Governor Vladislav Shapsha reported that five drones were downed over the region, damaging cars. In Tula Oblast, air defense units reportedly intercepted two drones. Three people were injured, according to Governor Dmitry Milyaev. The reported attacks come the same night that Russia launched another large-scale drone and missile attack against Ukraine. The attack killed four people in Kyiv and caused casualties and damage to cities in western Ukraine, far from the front lines. As peace negotiations stall and Russia refuses the accept a ceasefire, the war has escalated. Russia intensified aerial assaults on Ukrainian cities in late May, launching some of the heaviest assaults of the full-scale war over three consecutive nights. Less than a week later, Ukraine launched Operation Spiderweb, an audacious mass drone strike that reportedly damaged 41 Russian military planes. In the days since, Ukraine has continued to target key Russian military assets, launching strikes against missile bases and the Crimean Bridge. Damage reported after train runs over explosive device in Russia's Belgorod Oblast, governor claims
Editor's note: This is a developing story and is being updated. A rail line was damaged in Russia's Belgorod Oblast on May 25 after a cargo train ran over an explosive device planted underneath the tracks, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov claimed. Following an explosion in the Novooskolsky district, the railway's overhead contact line damaged, Gladkov said. Train traffic has been suspended as a result of the incident. Gladkov claimed that no one was injured in the alleged attack. The full extent of the damage was not immediately available, as emergency crews are assessing the damage. Ukraine's military has not commented on the alleged explosion. The Kyiv Independent cannot verify claims made by Russian officials. Ukraine's intelligence agencies as well as Ukrainian partisan movements have previously been involved in sabotage attacks on Russian railways, disrupting the transport of military cargo toward the front line. Ukraine's Military Intelligence Agency (HUR) said Ukrainian drone operators destroyed three Russian fuel tanks during a strike on a train moving through occupied areas of Zaporizhzhia Oblast on May 24. Ukraine's military currently has a limited presence in Belgorod Oblast, marking a second incursion into Russian territory, following a successful Kursk incursion in August 2024. Ukraine attacks on Russia's Belgorod injure 16, regional governor says
A series of Ukraine drone attacks on the region of Belgorod injured at least 16 people on Tuesday, the governor of the region in Russia's southwest that borders Ukraine said on Wednesday. Among the injured were a doctor and a paramedic, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on the Telegram messaging app. Eight people were hospitalised, he added. The Russian defence ministry said that its units destroyed 12 drones that Ukraine launched overnight, three of them over the Belgorod region. The ministry reports only the number of drones destroyed, not how many Ukraine launched. Reuters could not independently verify the Russian reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia started with an invasion of Ukraine 2022. Fire at 'industrial plant' after drone attack under control, Russia says Russia's President Vladimir Putin called for direct talks with Ukraine on Thursday, while he called a proposal, issued at the weekend by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiyy and his European allies for a 30-day ceasefire, an ultimatum. Zelenskiy said that he would attend the talks that are to take place in the Turkiye city of Istanbul if Putin is also there, and urged US President Donald Trump, who offered to join the meeting, to come along as well.
