Julie Stauch announces run for Iowa governor

DES MOINES, Iowa — After years of managing and working in campaigns at the local, state and federal levels, Julie Stauch is making a run for the state's highest office. It's her first time seeking public office, Julie tells WHO 13 News that she is treating it like a job resume with a cover letter and actual resume listed on her campaign website. You can learn more about her background and the different organizations she has been involved with, including the 24 campaigns spanning across all levels of government. Iowa veteran passes halfway point on Appalachian Trail 'Iowans are disgusted with our elected leaders, and we want change,' said Stauch (D). 'We are done with the destruction created by a Governor and Legislators who are destroying every aspect of our state, playing childish games with people's lives. We value our water, our soil, our children's futures, our schools, our communities and our county governments. We need leaders who embrace those values. I am one of those leaders.' Stauch is one of a couple of Iowa Democrats to jump into the field, with State Auditor Rob Sand announced his bid for office just several weeks ago. You can watch the full interview with Stauch with WHO 13's Zach Fisher attached above. Stauch discusses why she decided now was the appropriate time to run, and a campaign trail she plans to circle four times over the next year. Forecast: Mercury rises as smoke lingers

DES MOINES, Iowa — We've added a couple of degrees to the thermometer even with the smoke aloft Saturday, and we'll do so again Sunday and Monday. Your weather timeline steps you through it: Lows Saturday night will be on the mild side, and we head into a warmer Sunday. Smoke will stick around into Monday. Our next thunderstorm chance comes Tuesday, and it's conceivable that we'll see a stronger storm in southeastern Iowa later in the day. We'll monitor. Rain should wrap up early Tuesday evening. Another rain chance comes for some of us Thursday. Totals for the two rain events could exceed an inch in places. Tuesday's strong storm chance is the only one on tap for the next week or so, as our quiet severe weather season continues. Highs for the next six days are above, and your WHO 13 7-day forecasts below: The extended forecasts below keep us in below-average temperatures, though it appears chances for heavier rain and stronger storms could increase by the middle of June. Live on Location: Getting to know the community of Colfax

WHO 13's Today in Iowa crew has had a wonderful week learning about the unique town of Colfax in Jasper County and sharing the community's history and progress. We wrapped up the week Friday morning with a live visit to Colfax's Mineral Springs Park, where our Justin Surrency spoke with the superintendent of Colfax-Mingo Schools, Tim Salmon, about recent upgrades to athletics facilities and a proposed 100-spot childcare facility. Meteorologist Megan Salois also got in on the action with a trip to Sheepgate Coffee Company to meet community members and learn about the shop's caffeinated menu and sweet treats. Justin talked with local pharmacy owner and city council member Brad Magg about the need for Gov. Reynolds to sign the PBM legislation into law, and the effort and investment being made into the town's Main Street. You can check out all the Live on Location from Colfax stories here. Forecast: Here comes the rain

DES MOINES, Iowa — We've warmed nicely on a beautiful Sunday with sunshine and light winds. As you probably know, changes are ahead. Your weather timeline walks you through them: Storms look to move in late Sunday night, and the Storm Prediction Center's outlooks and Colorado State University's algorithm below point to chances for a few strong storms in the far southwest early Monday, and in southwest and south-central Iowa late Monday afternoon into early evening. A Stormpath slideshow is below. Rain looks to move in after 1 a.m. and continue roughly until 8 a.m. Monday in central Iowa before a break. Another wave will move through in the afternoon, with the third and strongest one coming through in the evening. Hail will be the main threat here. We'll also need to watch for street flooding in the metro. Rain chances continue until roughly midday Tuesday, then most of the rain will lift north of Interstate 80 Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. A spotty shower is still possible in the south. Rain chances diminish (but not to zero) Thursday, and we hope to see sunshine again by late afternoon. Friday and Saturday look nice to start the holiday weekend before the possible return of rain next Sunday, May 25. Both the Weather Prediction Center and the European computer model give us good, much-needed totals through Thursday. Hydrologists will be monitoring rivers in southeast Iowa (below) to see how far levels rise. Highs for the next six days and your WHO 13 7-day forecasts follow: It appears we'll stay cooler than average for the rest of May. Indications are, however, looking warmer than average for June.
