Chuck Mangione death: Grammy-winning musician behind ‘Feels So Good' dies at 84

Chuck Mangione, the jazz flugelhornist and trumpeter best known for his 1977 hit 'Feels So Good,' died Tuesday. The 84-year-old passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Rochester, New York, according to the Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral Home, WROC reports. Born in Rochester on November 29, 1940, Mangione began his musical journey alongside his brother, Gap, through their group The Jazz Brothers. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School and earned a bachelor's degree from the prestigious Eastman School of Music in 1963, later returning to teach jazz and even receiving an honorary doctorate. Over six decades, he released more than 30 albums, earning 14 Grammy nominations and winning two: Best Instrumental Composition for 'Bellavia' and Best Pop Instrumental Performance for 'Children of Sanchez.' Mangione's biggest hit, 'Feels So Good,' topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in May 1978 and climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 that June. The track also found its way into pop culture, from a memorable Memorex commercial with Ella Fitzgerald to recurring appearances in shows like King of the Hill. Mangione voiced a fictionalized version of himself on King of the Hill as a Mega Lo Mart spokesperson secretly living in the store under a never-ending endorsement contract. His character appeared in over a dozen episodes from Seasons 2 through 13, making him one of the show's most memorable recurring guest stars. Mangione also composed music for two Winter Olympics. His song 'Chase the Clouds Away' featured in the 1976 Games, and he performed 'Give It All You Got' at the 1980 Lake Placid closing ceremony. In 2012, Mangione was inducted into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame.

Perry Police arrest woman for allowing her child to eat cannabis brownie

PERRY, N.Y. (WROC) – A Perry man was arrested after officers with the Perry Police Department received reports of a domestic incident in Perry on Covington Street last month. Officers say the incident took place during a party between 44-year-old Bobbie Ellis, 444, a man, and a child the two have in common. During the investigation, officers say Ellis provided and allowed her child, who's a minor, to consume a cannabis brownie and that Ellis was growing her own cannabis and 'had more plants than what is allowed by New York State Law governing the private ownership, cultivating, and harvesting of cannabis for private consumption.' Officers say when Ellis arrived to Perry Village Court for another matter on June 10, she was taken into custody and charged with endangering the welfare of a child for providing and allowing her child to consume a cannabis brownie. Officers also charged Ellis with cultivating more than six mature cannabis plants and six immature cannabis plants for a total of 12 plants. While investigating officers learned Ellis was in possession of 21 immature cannabis plants which were seized and disposed of by the Perry Police Department. Ellis was processed by Perry Police and returned to Perry Village Court where she was arraigned and released on her own recognizance. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘This Is Sing-Out' film showcases 30 years of community giving

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — One Rochester non-profit's history is coming to the big screen next week. 'This is Sing-Out' tells the 30-year story of the organization of the same name. Director Frank Vella is one of thousands who have been a member of Sing-Out. 'The whole ethos of why I wanted to make the film is, I was very inspired by these adults,' Vella told News 8. 'It's been this really great, rich piece of like Rochester history for years. The organization was founded in the 1970s by Lisa Romack. She started it after her friend Tim passed away with the concept of putting on a musical revue together to raise money for children's charities. 'It ran for two years in the 70s, and he basically, while in hospice, was telling her that those were really the best memories of my life,' Vella said. So, Romack brought it back. Initially just for one year in Tim's honor. ''We should do it again. We should do it again,'' Vella quoted Romach saying. 'And it kind of grew. They switched it to where, in the beginning, it was all the adults that were in the original show, and it kind of transformed it to, 'Well, let's just make it high school kids and make it all about high school kids.'' Decades of history, decades of giving back to the community — mixed with the history of thousands of Sing-Out members, past and present — including Vella — he showcases it all through film… with a little help. 'The Town of East Rochester had filmed all 30 years,' Vella said. 'So I was able to go in, and they were able to give me all this footage. I really wanted to focus on the adults involved in Sing-Out, because these guys do so much work for the community, and they don't get the credit. They always keep it about the kids.' That theme of giving back: incorporated behind the scenes as well. 'Every penny we make from this film is going to go back to the Sing-Out organization,' Vella said. 'It played into the theme of the film. It's all about giving back. I wanted to make sure we were doing that on our end as well.' 'This is Sing-Out' premieres on Prime Video June 17.
