Waffle House solves huge problem for Tesla, EV makers
Waffle House operates as sort of the last of a dying breed. It's a 24/7 restaurant that offers a simple, comfort food menu. The chain may be famous for some of its more eccentric late-night customers and the fights that break out there, but that does not change that if serves a real purpose. Related: McDonald's announces major store change to win back customers When late-night workers get off shift, generally their only options are fast food and whatever might be offered by convenience stores. And, sure, some nights people are happy to go to the late-night drive-through at Wendy's, but sometimes you want a sit-down meal. Waffle House serves as an oasis for truck drivers, late-shift workers, students, and anyone who wants a hot meal after 11 p.m. It offers breakfast all day (including its namesake waffles, which are sort of a cross between a Belgian and an Eggo) as well as sandwiches. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter The chain may not offer gourmet food, but it's affordable, filling and available at all hours. Now, Waffle House has quietly made a deal that will make it useful in an entirely different way. Many people are hesitant about buying an electric vehicles because they're worried about keeping it charged or running out of power while on the road. That's a valid fear, according to the U.S. government. "National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that by 2030 there will be 33 million EVs on the road and 28 million EV charging ports will be needed to support them. The majority of charging will be at home and work, with the public network for opportunity charging and less common long trips," according to an web page. Researchers project the national charging infrastructure will require: 182,000 publicly accessible fast charging ports to enable long-distance travel and ride-hailing electrification and to support those who lack access to residential charging. 1 million Level 2 charging ports at publicly accessible locations-including high-density neighborhoods, office buildings, and retail outlets. 26 million Level 1 and Level 2 charging ports at privately accessible locations-including single-family homes, multifamily properties, and workplaces. A lot of work remains as the U.S. had over 192,000 publicly available charging ports with approximately 1,000 new public chargers being added each week, as of August 2024. That number would include some fast chargers and some level 2 charging ports. Putting chargers where people already are gives the public added confidence in their ability to keep their cars charged. That's why many Whole Foods parking lots offer EV chargers as do a very select number of Starbucks locations. Now, Waffle House has partnered with BP Pulses, part of the larger BP (BP) energy brand, to bring ultrafast EV charging to select Waffle House locations. Each site will feature six ultra-fast EV charging bays equipped with 400kW DC fast chargers and a mix of CCS and NACS connectors to cater to customers' needs. The first sites are expected to go live in 2026, "providing drivers with convenient and reliable access to EV charging while enjoying Waffle House's 24/7 amenities," the company added. BP Pulse has a very clear mission. "This collaboration underscores bp pulse's commitment to build a network of ultrafast chargers across the US, ensuring drivers have access to charging solutions where they need them mos," the company shared. Previous partnerships have brought charging stations which work with Tesla, Ford, Toyota, and nearly all electric vehicles to hubs near airports and other high-demand locations together with Hertz, including the recently announced Boston hub. "Additionally, BP Pulse continues to install EV charging across sites in BP's footprint of more than 8,000 retail locations, including TravelCenters of America, Thorntons, and Amoco," BP Pulse shared. BP Pulse is bringing EV chargers to Waffle House
This story was originally published on C-Store Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily C-Store Dive newsletter. BP Pulse, the electric vehicle charging arm of energy and retail company BP, has partnered with restaurant chain Waffle House to bring EV chargers to select locations. BP will install six 400 kW direct current fast charging bays at select sites, which include Waffle House locations in Texas, Florida, Georgia and other parts of the South and Southeast. The first charging sites, which will offer the two most common EV connectors, are expected to come online in 2026. The agreement comes as BP continues to install EV chargers across its hundreds of c-store locations under the Thorntons, Amoco and TravelCenters of America banners. BP has roughly 40,000 charge points globally. The company opened a Gigahub with 20 EV fast-charging bays last month just north of Boston Logan Airport in Massachusetts, and earlier this year debuted BP Pulse at a TravelCenters of America site, part of a plan that will add dozens more across the banner. BP had ambitions of reaching 100,000 EV chargers globally, though recently the company has been pulling back on many of its green energy plans. In February, it announced it would reduce investments in transitional businesses like electric vehicles by about $5 billion per year, to $1.5 billion to $2 billion annually. However, in spite of that broader refocus on its oil and gas business, the company is still expanding its EV charging network. 'We're building a robust network of ultrafast chargers across the country, and this is another example of third-party collaborations enabling access to charging co-located with convenient amenities for EV drivers,' said Sujay Sharma, CEO of BP Pulse. Representatives from BP did not return requests for comment on how many sites will be included in this partnership. At least 50 Waffle House locations in the South are getting EV chargers
With 24/7 service, thousands of locations, and affordable food, Waffle House is a go-to road-trip stop. And soon the chain will offer yet another draw to drivers looking for somewhere to take a break: Waffle House diners across the South will be getting EV chargers as soon as 2026. Waffle House is partnering with BP Pulse, the EV charging network operated by energy company BP, to bring DC fast chargers to diners across the South and Southeast, including in Texas, Georgia, and Florida. There are more than 2,000 Waffle House locations across the country; BP Pulse didn't say how many will ultimately get EV chargers through this effort, but that 'an initial tranche of 50 sites' is already in progress. Each site will have six EV charging bays, featuring 400 kilowatt DC fast chargers. Different fast chargers boast different speeds; BP Pulse says its 400 kW chargers can get a vehicle to 80% in as little as 15 to 30 minutes, though it depends on factors like the vehicle's battery size. Those chargers will be equipped with both CCS and NACS connectors. The first of those stations are expected to go live in 2026, per BP Pulse. This isn't Waffle House's first foray into the world of EV charging. In February 2024, the chain announced that a location in Tennessee would get EV chargers through EnviroSpark. That initiative was aided by National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding from the state's Department of Transportation. NEVI was part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and set aside $5 billion for states to expand the national EV charging network. The Trump administration, however, has thrown the NEVI program into chaos. This February, the administration told state transportation directors that they couldn't spend that funding, pausing the initiative and halting EV charger projects across the country. The NEVI pause shouldn't hurt this latest Waffle House deal though; BP Pulse says it isn't contingent on any incentives. BP Pulse already has a network of more than 8,000 EV charging locations across 46 states, and also operates internationally. California has long dominated in terms of EV adoption, but southern states are becoming big EV players. The second largest state for EVs, based on the number of registrations, is Florida, followed by Texas. Waffle House also makes sense as a hub for EV chargers: The diners are open 24/7 (even, notoriously, through some major storms), and are conveniently located along major corridors and off highway exits, making them an easy place to stop and top off your EV battery. 'Charging up while fueling up on an All-Star Special will be convenient and fast—a perfect option for enjoying the Waffle House experience while charging your EV on the go,' David Repp, director of Innovation at Waffle House, said in a statement.
