Waffle House drops egg surcharge: Are egg prices going down? What to know in Alabama
The Waffle House Index may be a useful indicator for more than extreme weather. The diner chain announced on July 1 that its dropping an egg surcharge put in place four months ago, signaling a decline in egg prices from the all-time highs seen earlier this year. "Egg-cellent news…as of June 2, the egg surcharge is officially off the menu," said the post. "Thanks for understanding!" USA TODAY reached out to Waffle House to confirm the change. Waffle House has dozens of locations in Alabama, including 15 in the Montgomery area, eight in the Tuscaloosa area, and four in the Gadsden area. Click here to find a store near you. Why was Waffle House charging extra for eggs? A 50-cent per egg surcharge was implemented at Waffle House's roughly 2,100 locations across the U.S. in early February to offset higher-than-usual prices resulting from a "continuing egg shortage caused by HPAI (Bird Flu)," the company said at the time. Waffle House serves around 272 million eggs per year, according to its website, well surpassing even its titular waffles, of which it sells just 124 million. The temporary charge was employed to avoid increasing prices across other menu items, it said. Are egg prices are down? Egg prices reached a high of roughly $6.22 per dozen on average in March, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The stage for this uptick was set when the current bird flu outbreak began in the U.S. in 2022 and the highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, killed off egg-laying poultry en masse, leaving fewer chickens behind to maintain the supply. By Feb. 3, when Waffle House implemented its surcharge, the virus had infected roughly 150 million poultry across all 50 states since January 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Because of the spread, infected birds have been selectively slaughtered across the U.S., including sometimes millions of birds at a single location. Why are egg prices falling? Here's what we know. Egg prices have begun to ease from the highs earlier this year, but their overall prices are still 40% higher than last year, according to the May Consumer Price Index. "Families are seeing relief with egg prices driving food deflation," U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins said in a June 26 statement about the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) response to bird flu. "While we are proud that over 900 biosecurity assessments have been conducted to date, resources remain available, and we are urging poultry farmers of all sizes to get your assessments done today before a potentially challenging fall.' Caitlin Clark jokes during Shane Gillis' ESPYS monologue met with mixed reactions
Shane Gillis served as host of the 2025 ESPYS and was front and center with a pair of Caitlin Clark-related jokes during his opening monologue. Gillis' first joke was met with a mixed reaction from the crowd as he compared himself to the Indiana Fever star. 'It's been a big year for the WNBA, I love Caitlin Clark,' Gillis said. 'She and I have a lot in common. We're both whites from the Midwest who have nailed a bunch of threes.' Clark was not in attendance for the awards show, as the Fever were on the road for a game against the New York Liberty at the Barclays Center. After what appeared to be a mixed reaction, Gillis paused and said, 'There you go, lighten up a little. It's not serious. We'll see about this one,' before telling his second joke. "When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist-fighting Black women,' Gillis said. The remarks were a reference to the heated exchanges Clark has had this season with opponents. Simone Biles wins two ESPY awards as Shane Gillis' tough monologue grabs attention
LOS ANGELES — Simone Biles won two trophies at the ESPYS on Wednesday night, including the women's best athlete award. The 11-time Olympic medalist claimed the night's first award, best championship performance for her efforts at the Paris Games. She won three golds and a silver while helping the U.S. women's gymnasts win their first team title since 2016. 'That was very unexpected, especially in a category of all men,' Biles said after kissing husband, Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens. She beat out Stephen Curry, Freddie Freeman and Rory McIlroy. Host Shane Gillis' awkward monologue Comedian Shane Gillis ' opening monologue as host of the show that honors the past year's top athletes and sports moments went over awkwardly. Early on, he called out various famous faces in the Dolby Theatre crowd, including retired WNBA star Diana Taurasi, who shared the Icon Award. Gillis said, 'Give it up for her' after calling her 'Deanna.' The camera showed an unsmiling Taurasi shaking her head. Gillis quickly caught his mistake, saying, 'My bad on that.' Gillis moved on to WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark, who wasn't on hand. 'When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist fighting Black women,' he joked. While some in the audience laughed, others appeared uncomfortable. Gillis plowed on for 10 minutes, with jokes about President Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, whose sex trafficking investigation has roiled the Justice Department and FBI. Gillis' performance drew mixed reviews on social media, with some calling him 'hilarious' and others 'cringey.' Gillis' initial joke about North Carolina coach Bill Belichick and his 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson drew a lot of laughs. 'A bookie is what Bill Belichick reads to his girlfriend before bed time,' he said. 'They read 'The Very Horny Caterpillar,' 'The Little Engine That Could But Needed a Pill First' and of course the classic 'Goodnight Boobs.'' But the reaction was mixed as Gillis continued. 'He won six Super Bowls. He's dating a hot 24 year old. Maybe if you guys won six Super Bowls you wouldn't be sitting next to a fat ugly dog wife.' Gillis admitted he should have cut that part of the joke. NBA Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander smiled when Gillis said, 'SGA is here. Everybody sitting around him is in foul trouble.' Gillis retold what he called 'a dumb joke' that he said he loved from former 'Saturday Night Live' comic Norm MacDonald's stint as ESPYS host in 1998. Gillis congratulated Colorado two-way player Travis Hunter for winning the Heisman Trophy. 'That's something they can never take away from you unless you kill your wife and a waiter,' he said, referring to the late O.J. Simpson. Before closing it out, a smiling Gillis said, 'I see a lot of you don't like me and that's OK. That's it for me. That went about exactly how we all thought it was going to go. I don't know why this happened.' Jimmy V Award An emotional Katie Schumacher-Cawley accepted the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance with her husband and children looking on. The Penn State women's volleyball coach was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in September. She continued coaching without missing a practice and became the first woman to guide a team to the NCAA national championship. 'Cancer changed my life but it didn't take it. It didn't take my belief, it didn't take my spirit and it didn't take my team,' she said. Sports Humanitarian Awards The Indianapolis Colts and former U.S. Open tennis champion Sloane Stephens were among the winners at the 11th annual Sports Humanitarian Awards. The Colts were honored as the team of the year for their Kicking the Stigma campaign to raise mental health awareness and expand access to treatment. Stephens received the Muhammad Ali award for her namesake foundation that works to make tennis more inclusive through access, representation and support for kids on and off the court. She beat out Washington Wizards guard CJ McCollum and Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin. Michele Kang, the billionaire owner of the NWSL's Washington Spirit, was chosen as the Sports Philanthropist of the Year. Billy Bean, former MLB player and executive, was honored with the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award.

Shane Gillis' cringey Caitlin Clark ESPYs joke landed with a resounding thud
Shane Gillis is generally a very funny comedian, but his cringey Caitlin Clark joke at this year's ESPY Awards in Los Angeles landed with a resounding thud. During his opening monologue, Gillis joked about what Clark might do after she retires. The set up involved her working at Waffle House. The reasoning is... we're going to let him explain this one. ""When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist-fighting Black women," Gillis said to a spattering of laughs in the audience. Uh... okay? Gillis' unapologetic humor is usually buoyed by his self-deprecating filter, and we get that he's just trying to get a rise out of the audience and lampoon the general physical play of the WNBA as it pertains to Clark. However, this joke just didn't connect at all. It's not a malicious joke; it's just an ineffective swipe at shock. We get the parody nature of it to represent when WNBA games get scrappy, but it's just a hollow gag. Gillis tends to do a very good job of openly acknowledging in his set when a joke bombs, but this one hit the deck and didn't get back up.

US egg prices fall for third straight month
The average price for a dozen eggs is now $3.77, another step down from March's record-high carton costs. The latest numbers mark the third straight month of declining egg prices for American consumers, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. The highest price — around $6.23 in March — has steadily dipped each month, with costs landing near $5.12 in April and $4.55 in May. Bird flu outbreaks in January and February caused the average price to skyrocket in March, according to the BLS. But with cases of tne avian flu more controlled, Easter demand quelled and egg imports increased, the cost of a dozen eggs have cooled off. Popular breakfast chains like Denny's and Waffle House recently removed their egg surcharges in response to the petering costs. In February, Waffle House instituted a 50-cent egg surcharge at all of its 1,900 locations because of the rising costs of eggs. Denny's surcharge varied by location. Waffle House ended its surcharge on June 2, while Denny's ended it May 21. NewsNation's Jordan Perkins contributed to this report.
