Tornado flips ute in WA, golf ball-sized hail damages property
A tornado has flipped a car in southern Western Australia as large hail stones lashed a nearby town. Southern WA was pounded by storms on Tuesday, including a tornado about 300km southeast of Perth. A Frankland River farmer filmed the tornado; the weather system flipped a ute and ripped the cab walls off a tractor. The farmer told the ABC that he had been watching the storm's lightning strikes when the tornado funnel started forming. The tornado was about a kilometre away from him and lasted about two minutes. Numerous trees were ripped out of the ground as well. 'I was like, 'Wow, look at that'. The first thing you do is get your phone out and take some photos and video,' he said. Several storms brought damaging hail stones across the southern half of WA on Tuesday. Golf ball-sized stones fell at the town of Wagin. Video shows the stones pounding down on Wagin's homes and streets. A thunderstorm is forecast to bring up to 40mm of rain across Perth on Wednesday; much of the southern half of the state will be wet too. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a marine wind warning but no other warnings for WA. There are frost warnings for areas of South Australia. Parts of the of the Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East and Lower South East are waking up to frozen conditions on Wednesday. Parts of northern and northeast Victoria have frosty conditions on Wednesday as well. Out well beyond the east coast, seas up to 5m are forecast around Lord Howe Island from Thursday morning. 'These conditions may produce significant beach erosion, particularly about south-facing coasts,' a bureau warning cautions. 'Beach conditions could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf-exposed areas.' This weather system is causing dangerous conditions on the mainland too. People fishing, swimming or boating on the Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra coasts should be particularly cautious on Wednesday.

Rookie Lisa Shalders wins her first two titles at the 2025 Ranch Sorting National Championships Australia
First time ranch sorting nationals competitor Lisa Shalders returned to Wagin with two 2025 Australian titles after competing in New South Wales. Jumping on a horse only two years ago, the 34-year-old was named the rookie national champion and graduated beginner reserve champion for the 2025 Ranch Sorting National Championships Australia at Dubbo Showground on April 27. Run by the WA Team Penners Association Inc, the four-day annual competition involves two riders on horseback working together to sort numbered cattle into their correct pens in numerical order, with the fastest time winning. Shalders rode a borrowed horse, Beau, at the nationals because she could not transport her own 14-year-old Quarter horse Chex due to work. She said the competition was 'unreal' for her first time at national level. 'It was surreal, I had put in a lot of work and to have achieved this title was amazing,' Shalders said. 'It's a great family friendly sport, very inclusive. 'I was fortunate enough to have the best company in the team WA crew, what an awesome group of people to share the experience.' The national champion has been ranch sorting since February 2024 when her friend Shelby Davies convinced her to try it. 'I started ranch sorting last year because I wanted to ride ponies and chase cows with my best mate and I never thought achieving this was possible,' she said. 'I would not be where I am without Shelby, I owe this achievement to you, my friend. 'I'm so pumped for the new season and what's to come for us, this sport and the future.' Shalders' past achievements include the WA beginner State champion 2024. She said her ultimate goal was to ride at Worlds in America. She thanked her mother Helen Shalders, partner Gary Brass and everyone involved in the RANCA.

UGSHA 2025: Women's A-grade victories to All Blacks and Wagin in round two, Lakes and All Blacks in men's A
All Blacks recorded their first win of the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association women's A-grade competition on Saturday, downing Williams 2-0 in a skilful contest. Both sides produced some impressive play but it was goals from Claire Coffey and Zoe George that proved the difference between the two sides. Wagin were the other round two winners in the women's A-grade competition, downing Woodanilling. Goals from Jessie Allington and Alexis Kermode guided Wagin to a 2-0 victory. In the men's A-grade competition, both Lakers and All Blacks emerged victorious in round two. A double from Kyle Angwin and another strike from Liam Sweeney handed All Blacks a 3-1 win over Warriors. The game between Olympics and Lakers was intense with fast ball movement and quick turnovers meaning both defences were kept busy. Lakers finished 2-1 winners thanks to goals from David Lange and William Tan. Olympics' Dylan Mulcahy pegged a goal back and Shawn Heil was a strong contributor but their side went down in the end. In the men's B-grade competition, Williams scored five consecutive goals to down Olympics 7-2 at the final whistle after an even start. Oli Harding, Nick Klug and Michael Cowcher all scored twice in the emphatic result. Woodanilling were 5-1 winners over Pingelly, and in the other men's B-grade clash Wagin edged out All Blacks in a tight 2-1 result. The women's B-grade grand final rematch between Robins and All Blacks highlighted round two. Robins claimed a tense 3-1 win, with Colleen Edwards scoring first for last year's runners-up. Zoe George got a goal back for the reigning premiers in the third quarter but scores from Katie Blight and Dee Blight ensured the Robins victory. Brookton defeated Woodanilling 4-2 and Warriors scored a 1-0 triumph over Pingelly.

NDNA 2025: Wagin and Williams notch impressive wins in second round of A1 competition
It was a tough and competitive game in this week's Narrogin and Districts Netball Association A1 fixture as Wagin faced off against Pingelly in a fast-paced and physical encounter. Wagin, known for their sharp game sense and strong defensive pressure, brought their trademark intensity from the outset, putting Pingelly under pressure early. Pingelly took some time to adapt to Wagin's speed and style of play, finding themselves on the back foot during the opening quarter. However, by the third term, they began to find their rhythm, piecing together several impressive passages of play and settling into the contest. Despite this, Wagin maintained their high intensity right through to the final whistle with a convincing win. In the other A1 match, Williams defeated Wickepin 59-44. This year's A1 competition features just four teams, Pingelly, Wagin, Wickepin and Williams. While a smaller competition presents its own challenges, each team is making the most of the opportunity to compete at a higher level. As the three-week grading period wraps up with this weekend's round, there's space for conversation about how best to support both competitiveness and participation in the competition, particularly as community sport continues to evolve and clubs work to field teams across all divisions. In the junior ranks, the JD3 competition delivered a stand-out game between Pingelly and Waves. The match showcased the skills of young players who are developing rapidly and gaining valuable court experience each week. The joy on their faces was contagious, matched by the enthusiastic support from the sidelines. The future of netball is looking bright. It was also fantastic to see the NDNA Green Shirt umpires out on court. Their growth is becoming more evident each week as they gain confidence with the support of experienced umpire mentors. Congratulations to these emerging umpires for stepping up and with more umpires always needed, it's promising to see the next generation coming through.
