Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Bernard Parker reflects on successful first season in coaching
Kaizer Chiefs' Wandile Duba and TS Galaxy's Mlungisi Mbunjana fight for the ball during their Betway Premiership match. Image: Backpagepix Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Bernard Parker has expressed his satisfaction with TS Galaxy's overall performance during the 2024/25 season, which marked his debut campaign as an assistant coach at senior level and as head coach of the club's DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team. As he transitions from a celebrated playing career into coaching, Parker says he's proud of the strides his teams have made, even amidst early difficulties. Speaking about the season, the 39-year-old admitted that adapting to professional coaching was initially challenging, despite having prior experience at lower levels. 'It was quite tough for me at first to put the team together because, although I had done coaching at a grassroots level, this was my first official season in professional coaching,' he explained. Parker holds a unique dual role with the Rockets, acting as a vital link between the club's DDC side and the senior team. A growing number of Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs are turning to their development ranks to promote emerging talent from within their youth systems. Video Player is loading. He becomes the latest young prospect to make the switch from Amakhosi to the Rockets, following the path taken by Puso Dithejane and Khulimane Ndamane before him. Earlier in the campaign, Galaxy had found themselves in a difficult position following the departure of head coach Sead Ramovic after a string of unsatisfactory results. However, the club regained its footing under the joint leadership of Parker and Bosnian tactician Adnan Beganovic. The duo successfully steered the Rockets into a top-eight finish, narrowly missing out on CAF Confederations qualification. Reflecting on the season's beginning, Parker attributed the team's slow start to the loss of key players, which disrupted their rhythm and made it difficult to build momentum. 'It was a bit of a challenge to maintain balance after we lost some important players early in the season,' Parker said. 'We had to find replacements who could match the quality we had before, in order to carry forward from where we left off last season.'

Kaizer Chiefs news: Gaston Sirino, Wandile Duba, Nasreddine Nabi
Kaizer Chiefs' elation of Nedbank Cup glory, ending their ten-year-trophy drought, has been restored to paranoia as the Soweto giants idle above MTN 8 qualification. Chippa United's 3-0 defeat to league winners Mamelodi Sundowns means the ball is now firmly in AmaKhosi's court, who will be guaranteed an MTN8 spot by winning their remaining two games. However, claiming eighth position will be no easy feat as they gear up to face CAF Confederation Cup chasers Sekhukhune United, who have qualification as things stand but will feel the heat of Stellenbosch, who are one point behind. With both sides having something to play for, tomorrow's game promises to be a blockbuster. Kaizer Chiefs' final game sees them face Polokwane City. After the final whistle blew at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last Saturday, crowning the Glamour Boys as Nedbank Cup champions, youngster Wandile Duba and veteran Gaston Sirino were seen weeping tears of joy. It indicates not only how much it meant but also how demanding the season has been. Rumours had been circulating about Nasreddine Nabi's future at the club before last weekend's final. The Tunisian is now a sure lock for next season, but he has some demands. 'I wouldn't be honest if say that I'm gonna stay if the club doesn't allow me to get all the tools to succeed next season because they have promised, and myself, I have promised the fans that I want to build a successful team that will compete in every competition to win trophies,' Nabi told SuperSport . 'That's the condition for me to stay [at Chiefs] because I don't feel that I want to go through what I went through this season.' Wandile Duba cries for the Kaizer Chiefs cause
Wandile Duba showed just how much it means to play for Kaizer Chiefs and win silverware. What a feeling that must be! 20-year-old striker Wandile Duba has endured a slow start campaign because of injuries. However, whenever fit and available, he's been one of the club's most reliable performers. His tears at the final whistle after their win over Pirates in the Nedbank Cup show just what it means to end a long trophy drought. It's been a productive campaign for Duba. Although injury deprived him of a couple of months, he's still managed 24 appearances in all competitions, hitting six goals and supplying four assists. He's also picked up five yellows. A full season of fitness will be Duba's goal in 2025-2026. Wandile Duba bagged his first senior goal for Amakhosi in 2024. Image: iDiski Times. Kaizer Chiefs must bring their scoring boots along to take down Orlando Pirates in Soweto derby
Wandile Duba Wandile Duba will be eager to find the back of the net for Kaizer Chiefs against Orlando Pirates. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Comment by Mihlali Baleka Kaizer Chiefs are in a race against time to ensure they finish the Premiership in the top eight – a feat they could make strides in achieving that feat this week. Chiefs will face arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off). You see, the odds are against Chiefs winning this match as their ninth-place on the standings, and inconsistency have been their downfall this season. Yes, Chiefs have blown hot and cold this season as they only have 30 points to their league campaign, despite playing 26 games out of 28. Their rollercoaster ride has seen them miss out on the league title, and two domestic competitions - the MTN8 and Carling Knockout. They could, however, change things in the next two games as they'll face Pirates in back-to-back derbies, including the Nedbank Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium on May 10. Sure, the clash in Durban could ensure that they end their 10-year drought, but they can't think that far – they need to ensure they win in the league on Saturday. Chiefs have to win the derby as that would see them make strides in their pursuit for the top eight as something that eluded them in the previous campaign. The Amakhosi haven't been convincing in the last two league games as they drew with Chippa United before they lost to Marumo Gallants at home, the Calabash, last Saturday. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Coach Nasreddine Nabi has been vividly upset about the team's run of form, so much so that he needed to give a lengthy post-match talk after the loss to Gallants. He said they needed to pick themselves up and not give up on their campaign as the two Soweto derbies could still save their season. Chiefs lost the reverse leg in the league in February as they went down courtesy of Patrick Maswanganyi's Panenka in stoppage time of the game. However, they showed that they have what it takes to step up in big games as they played well in that game, directing traffic from start to play. Chiefs played better in that game, and were kept in the match due to the heroics of goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma, who has since transgressed since that game. Bvuma has conceded a lot of goals, and was responsible for the two against Gallants. It was the wrong match for Bvuma to make those mistakes, because it didn't only deprive them of the win, but played into the criticism of Itumeleng Khune. The legendary goalkeeper said his protégé didn't adhere to his advice 'to fight for the No 1', as he was just happy to play with him at Chiefs. Bvuma has a chance to make up for shortcoming this season, though, as two clean sheets in the next two games could revive his confidence ahead of the new season. Sure, clean sheets are important, but Chiefs need to score as well. They've struggled in that regard, and that's why they need to ensure that they bring their scoring boots in the derby. The likes of Wandile Duba, Ashley du Preez, Makabi Lilelo and Tashreeq Morris have produced some important contributions on attack, and can become Chiefs legends if they find the back of the net against Pirates.
