Wanita must lead in ageing nation policies, says Fadhlina
Official start: PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh (third from left) sounding the gong at the PKR National Congress in Johor Baru. Also present were Fadhlina (second from left) and Youth Chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim (left). — Bernama JOHOR BARU: As the women's wing of a ruling party, Wanita PKR needs to beef up efforts to prepare Malaysia for an ageing population, says Fadhlina Sidek. The party's Wanita chief said that these preparations encompassed policy development and legislation related to the Ageing Nation Agenda. 'This is crucial as Malaysia is expected to reach aged nation status by 2030. Wanita PKR is no longer just an ordinary wing, we are now part of the government. 'As such, preparations, including policies, and legislative matters at the government level must be closely followed by the the wing.' She said this in a press conference during the Wanita PKR congress at the Danga Bay Convention Centre here yesterday. The ageing population and its effect on women were among the key issues raised during the congress. Of the 14 delegates who debated at the congress, at least two highlighted the urgent need for the country to prepare for an ageing society. Terengganu PKR Wanita chief Armila Alias questioned the country's readiness, pointing out that Malaysia has already crossed the threshold to be considered an ageing nation. 'The United Nations defines an ageing population as a country where 7% of its people are aged 65 and above. 'Malaysia reached 7.6% in 2024, and the figure is expected to rise to 15% by 2040, which would make us an aged nation. 'The question now is, are we ready? 'Are our policies, structures and societal culture equipped to handle this wave of ageing?' Armila said, adding that 9% of the population in Terengganu was already aged 60 and above in 2023. She called for more efforts to empower women, who often shoulder care-giving responsibilities for the elderly. Echoing a similar concern was Selangor Wanita PKR chief Pua Pei Ling, who noted that more than 8% of the population was aged 65 and above in 2024. 'I realise the burden of caregiving, especially for those with ailing parents, largely falls on women. 'We often hear complaints from young women who had to quit their jobs to care for elderly parents, or take on multiple jobs to cope. 'This is the reality for many women. Their biggest fear as they grow older is being neglected. 'If we don't build policies that protect women now, we are simply passing down these burdens to the next generation,' Pua said. Other key issues discussed during the congress included climate change, the development of artificial intelligence, and the role of women in elections.

PKR polls: Wanita PKR prepping likely candidates for GE16 and Sabah polls, says Fadhlina
JOHOR BARU: Wanita PKR has begun laying the groundwork for the 16th General Election, including grooming potential candidates, says its chief Fadhlina Sidek. Fadhlina, who is also Education Minister, said the women's wing has arranged several training programmes, especially in Sabah, which is expected to hold its state election this year. "The training is not just about developing talent, but also preparing candidates with the right ideals, communication skills, data training, the ability to win over voters, and the confidence to stand for election. "We are also securing financial support through initiatives such as the 30WReps Fund, which aims to assist the party's women who will be contesting in the Sabah and general elections," she told a press conference during the PKR Wanita Congress at the Danga Bay Convention Centre here on Friday (May 23). She added that the 30WReps Fund, with a starting amount of RM50,000, allows the party's women candidates to focus on their campaigns without worrying about funding. "The initiative addresses one of the biggest challenges faced by election candidates, especially women, which is securing funds," she said. Fadhlina also said Johor is seen as one of the best places to identify talent among women. 'We won seven parliamentary seats in Johor with the help of our partners in Pakatan Harapan. "So, Johor is not just a location (but) one of our strongest power bases, especially (in the context) of general election victories," she said. Fadhlina had been asked if the party planned to field more women candidates in the next general election.

Fadhlina turns down Rodziah's call for debate
Published on: Tuesday, May 20, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 20, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail had invited Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek to debate on the future direction of the party's women's wing. PETALING JAYA: Wanita PKR chief Fadhlina Sidek has turned down an invitation by Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail to debate on the direction and future of the party's women's wing. According to Sinar Harian, Fadhlina said debating was not a priority at the moment as her main focus was on strengthening the party and supporting its president, Anwar Ibrahim. 'My answer is the same as Nurul Izzah (Anwar)'s: there's no need for it. Right now, our focus is on strengthening the party. 'All the initiatives we've undertaken are aimed at strengthening the party and showing full support for our president,' she told a press conference following a campaign event in Seremban last night. Last Friday, Rodziah, who is once again challenging Fadhlina for the post of Wanita PKR chief, invited the education minister to a debate on the future direction of the wing. Rodziah said she was following in the footsteps of PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, who had challenged Nurul Izzah to a debate just two days earlier. Advertisement Rafizi and Nurul Izzah are set to face off for the party's number two post in the upcoming election for central leadership positions. Nurul Izzah had also declined the debate invitation from Rafizi, saying her priority was to de-escalate tensions within the party and focus on engagement with delegates. Fadhlina said debates could be constructive when used to discuss substantive policy issues. 'But in the current climate, our focus should be on unity and strengthening the party,' she said. In March, Rodziah revealed that she was contesting the Wanita PKR chief post again, saying the wing had become 'lethargic' under Fadhlina's leadership, with 'many areas that need improvement'. The wing's deputy chief, Juwairiya Zulkifli, dismissed Rodziah's claim and said that leadership styles vary among individuals. In the 2022 party polls, Fadhlina defeated Rodziah for the Wanita PKR chief post by just 32 votes, securing 18,923 votes to Rodziah's 18,891. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PKR campaigning with bots ‘like Umno', says Rafizi
Published on: Monday, May 19, 2025 Published on: Mon, May 19, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said his social media platforms are also flooded with bot accounts. PETALING JAYA: PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli claims that bots are being used by certain candidates running in the party's central leadership elections, lamenting that this makes PKR look like Umno. Rafizi said the use of bots reflected badly on PKR as it mirrored the campaigning tactics of Umno, its fierce rival prior to the formation of the unity government, and warned that Malaysians were watching PKR's central leadership polls closely. Advertisement The Pandan MP said he had a team conducting social media data analysis which, a few months ago, detected the use of bots to boost the number of reactions on social media to postings by government ministries and agencies. He said this had spilled over into the PKR elections, quipping that the party now had a division in Vietnam – a reference to the registered location of one of those bot accounts. 'If you want to use bots, please don't use it for Nurul Izzah Anwar's social media platforms or else she will get criticised. 'It would be a laughing stock for others to say that we have a division in Vietnam,' he said at a campaign event in Perak last night. Advertisement Adding that his social media platforms were also flooded with bot accounts, Rafizi blamed the practice on newer members and called on PKR to be extra careful in recruiting new members. He added that it reminded him of the communication strategies of former prime minister Najib Razak. Rafizi is in a one-on-one contest with Nurul Izzah for the PKR deputy presidency, which he won in the 2022 party elections. Nurul Izzah, who did not contest then, is currently an appointed party vice-president. Separately, Rafizi said his team decided against contesting the post of PKR Youth chief as they respected party president Anwar Ibrahim's advice to leave the party's top posts uncontested in this election. He dismissed claims that his team had no one capable of contesting the post, saying he believed that a culture of respect was crucial in the party. Nonetheless, he sought to explain Rodziah Ismail's candidacy for the post of Wanita PKR chief, saying he had advised her to deeply weigh her intentions first. 'She later told me that the Wanita PKR grassroots felt that the women's wing was slowly drifting away from its original ideology, becoming more comfortable in affluent areas. 'She said it was not about winning or losing but taking up the voice of the Wanita PKR grassroots to the leadership. If we lose, at least our voices and hopes will be heard and considered by the new leaders,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
