‘Will haunt every cricket fan forever': Internet mourns death of 11 in stampede at Bengaluru stadium during RCB's IPL victory celebrations

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) sparked a frenzy among cricket enthusiasts after winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy for the first time in 18 years. On Tuesday, the franchise clashed with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final leg at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. On Wednesday morning, the team's management announced they would hold a victory parade in Bengaluru – in an open bus from city's Vidhana Soudha to the Chinnaswamy Stadium – followed by an event at the stadium. Limited free passes were made available online for the event. However, thousands of fans thronged to the stadium to be a part of the celebrations, which soon turned tragic. In a stampede-like incident outside the stadium on Wednesday evening, 11 people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries. The incident unfolded around 4.00 PM near Gate 3 of the stadium ahead of the celebrations. Soon after the tragedy, the Internet mourned the lives lost, slamming the authority over crowd management. Sharing a post on X, industrialist Harsh Goenka wrote, 'Delhi station stampede. Kumbh stampede. Bangalore IPL stampede. Dozens die. No resignations. No accountability. No lessons. Leaders from the opposition BJP, including R Ashok, B Y Vijayendra, and Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, also visited the hospitals and demanded an inquiry into the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and wrote, 'The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery.'
