Man dead and officer wounded after a standoff in a Georgia mall parking lot

CENTERVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A man died and a police officer was wounded following a predawn standoff in the parking lot of a Georgia mall on Friday. Investigators say the standoff began when Centerville police were dispatched to the parking lot of a fitness center located in the Houston County Galleria around 3:45 a.m. They found Michael Dwayne Bell, 37, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, parked there in a semitruck. Police in nearby Byron were looking for Bell because they said he had been involved in a domestic altercation, Centerville police said. Officers attempted to arrest Bell, but he refused to come out, Centerville police said. When they tried entering the truck, Bell fired a gun from inside, wounding a Warner Robins police officer, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. Officers shot back, and then fell back to set up a perimeter and wait for a SWAT team, Centerville police said. Officers later tried to communicate with Bell but got no response, GBI said. When officers entered the truck around 6:20 a.m., they found Bell dead. It was not clear if Bell shot himself or if an officer shot him. A GBI spokesperson said Friday that the agency could provide no further information at this time. The wounded Warner Robins officer was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will conduct an autopsy as part of its inquiry. When the investigation is complete, the Houston County district attorney will decide whether any criminal charges are merited. The mall is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) south of Atlanta in middle Georgia.

Auburn is in the top five for Kavon Conciauro ahead of this week's commitment date

The three-star WR from Georgia will choose between Auburn, Georgia, and others this Friday. Auburn football has the chance to enhance its 2026 recruiting efforts this week as it remains a giant contender to land a three-star wide receiver from Georgia. Kavon Conciauro, a three-star wide receiver from Warner Robins, Georgia, will announce his commitment on Friday, July 11, and Auburn is named a finalist. The Tigers are competing with Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Georgia, and Duke for his pledge. Conciauro took his official visit to Auburn during the weekend of June 6, a few months after visiting the Plains during the spring practice session. In an interview with Auburn Undercover, Conciauro spoke on the relationship he has developed with wide receivers coach Marcus Davis. Davis is making Conciauro a priority despite entering his recruitment later than most programs, and Conciauro feels that he can "relate" to Davis. Davis' ability to develop and coach his players stands out to the talented wide receiver the most. "Seeing guys make plays, seeing (Davis) coach up guys who make mistakes, and then guys execute off the coaching points he makes was great," Conciauro said. "It shows that the guys bought in, and he bought into the guys as well." As has been the case for many recruits lately, Auburn is not considered the frontrunner to land Conciauro, and will look to make a strong push this week leading up to his commitment date. Mississippi State is seen as the favorite heading into the week with a 58.2% forecast. Conciauro is the No. 59 player from Georgia for the 2026 cycle, and is the No. 93 wide receiver according to On3. Police identify suspect, victim in murder-suicide at Warner Robins home

An elderly man shot a woman dead, then died by suicide at their home in Warner Robins on Wednesday, the Warner Robins Police Department said. A person called 911, then hung up, prompting officers to conduct a welfare check, a news release from the police department stated. The 911 call came in around 6:30 p.m. and police responded to the 200 block of Hillcrest Ave. They found 88-year-old Robert Moll 'in the backyard deceased with a gunshot wound,' and 80-year-old Judy Moll inside the home, also dead from a gunshot wound, WRPD said. They owned the home together, according to property records from the Houston County Assessor's Office. More information about their connection wasn't immediately available. Officers began investigating the incident as a murder-suicide, and confirmed Thursday that this was the cause of their deaths, a news release said. Police said Robert Moll was a suspect and victim, and Judy Moll was a victim. The WRPD Criminal Investigations Division and identification criminalists responded to the scene to investigate. Both bodies were sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Crime Lab to undergo autopsies, according to Houston County Coroner James Williams. Williams declined to confirm whether their families were notified of their deaths by around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Police urged anyone with information about the case to call Detective Karmen Thompson or Detective Omari Ferguson at 478-302-5380, or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68CRIME. This story may be updated as more information becomes available.
