MPOGCF Introduces Wildlife Interaction Management Model To Assist Oil Palm Smallholders

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation (MPOGCF) introduced the Wildlife Interaction Management Model, which integrates smallholder communities and palm oil plantation companies to achieve coexistence with wild elephants. In a statement today, MPOGCF announced that the management model, a first of its kind in Peninsular Malaysia, was established as a result of the collaboration between MPOGCF and Earthworm Foundation (EF) through the pilot project Achieving Coexistence with Elephants in Sungai Ara, Kota Tinggi in Johor, implemented over an area of 8,400 hectares. 'This project also involves the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) which aims to ensure the survival of wild elephants without compromising the safety and income sources of smallholders in the affected areas," according to the statement. Throughout the implementation of the project, 412 individuals from the Kampung Sungai Ara community, FELCRA (Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority) as well as representatives of government agencies and plantation companies participated in various capacity-building workshops focusing on managing human-wildlife interactions, the use of drone technology and best mitigation practices. "Among the main achievements is the installation of 10 Early Warning System (EWS) units in the Sungai Ara Plantation Cooperative (KPSA) and FELCRA plantation areas, which help the community detect the presence of elephants earlier. 'Additionally, period patrols supported by drone technology are also implemented and two youths from Sungai Ara who are also oil palm smallholders, have been certified as drone pilots by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM)," said the statement. To ensure the effectiveness and direction of management in a more systematic and coordinated manner, the Human-Elephant Coexistence Committee (HEC) and Terms of Reference (ToR) were established during the committee's first meeting in November 2023, which successfully drafted and approved the flowchart for managing human-elephant interactions. MPOGCF general manager Hairulazim Mahmud said the initiative proves that coexisting with wildlife such as elephants can be effectively managed with the active involvement of smallholders and various stakeholders. "This project not only helps enhance the community's ability to interact harmoniously with the presence of wild elephants but also provides awareness and new skills to smallholder communities.

Blink-182's Mark Hoppus elaborates on ‘very strange' rivalry with Green Day

Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus admits that his band's rivalry with Green Day was 'very strange.' In 'Fahrenheit-182,' the musician's memoir published in April, he revealed his San Diego pop punk group developed a toxically competitive dynamic with Green Day during their joint 2002 tour. Now, Hoppus is elaborating on that relationship, claiming that the competition was driven by the East Bay punk trio. 'That was very strange because I grew up listening to Green Day,' he reflected during an interview with NME published on Friday, May 16. 'I was a huge fan, then we're touring with them, but it was a weird thing where Green Day were dipping at the time and Blink were ascendent.' At the time, Blink-182 was riding the success of its 1999 breakthrough album, 'Enemy Of The State' and its similarly popular 2001 follow-up, 'Take Off Your Pants.' Meanwhile, Green Day was grappling with a decline in popularity after the 2000 release of its sixth studio album 'Warning,' which they didn't bounce back from until the 2004 release of 'American Idiot.' Hoppus went on to explain how despite being billed as co-headliners, Green Day was essentially opening for Blink-182. 'Headlining over your idols is a little strange… We walked in thinking we were hot s— and Green Day walked in ready to fight — musically of course,' he said. 'Billie was super nice to us. Then, when it came time to get on stage… It's like athletes: we could be on different teams, but when we get on the field we're going to try and kick your ass.' Green Day has not publicly responded to Hoppus' allegations. The 'All the Small Things' hitmaker added that his band, which also included lead vocalist and guitarist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker at the time, didn't necessarily join the tour with that competitive state of mind. 'They blew us off the stage the first few nights and we were like, 'Oh s—, we have to up our game'. Then it was this battle back-and-forth about who could put on the better show and who could win people over,' Hoppus said. Hopper described Blink-182's relationship with Green Day as 'rival gangs across town who both despise and respect each other' in his memoir, noting that sometimes they'd end up in 'screaming matches with their manager in the hallways.' Though the bands haven't toured together since, there seems to be no bad blood on Hoppus' end. 'It definitely made us a better band,' he reflected. 'I think I inspired them so much they were like, 'We have to kill Blink-182 with an awesome album called 'American Idiot'.'

Western Colorado warming up as the weekend approaches

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Today marks the beginning of a warming trend that will continue on until the weekend arrives. Mostly sunny skies can be expected today as the low pressure system responsible for much of the cooling seen yesterday begins to dissipate. The highest temperatures of the day will reach 70 degrees, with chances for showers beginning at 3:00 in the afternoon. Tonight, expect chances for showers and thunderstorms to continue and cloud coverage to slowly move in. Temperatures will dip to the low forties and breezes are expected to remain today will be 5-10 degrees warmer than yesterday, with another round of widespread showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. A gradual warming and drying trend kicks in for Friday and Saturday. Elevated to critical fire weather conditions will be possible this weekend as winds increase ahead of the next storm. Cooler, wetter, and unsettled conditions return for early next Freeze Warning that was seen to southwest Colorado will remain in effect through the morning hours, while fire weather remains possible south of the Four Corners. Another shortwave trough will drop into the area this afternoon, kicking off another round of widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. The higher terrain along and north of I-70 will be most favored to see this activity, although adjacent valleys, as well as the San Juans, could see some passing showers as skies will continue to clear in southwest Colorado, but sub-freezing temperatures may be in their future. Because of this, another Freeze Warning is not expected, and will hopefully clear up the state as far as watches and warnings go. The next 12 hours will be mostly dry with improving ceilings. Showers will redevelop tomorrow afternoon, potentially impacting most terminals. Westerly to north westerly winds will pick up in the afternoon as expect a warmer day ahead!
