Hungary's Orbán mocks ‘featherweight' von der Leyen over EU-US trade deal
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán slammed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday for failing to secure a favourable trade pact with Donald Trump – describing the talks as "Trump eating von der Leyen for breakfast." The agreement, unveiled following a face-to-face meeting between von der Leyen and Trump in Scotland on Sunday, includes a 15% flat tariff on EU automobiles and other goods, according to the US president.
"It is obvious to me that this is not an agreement,' Orbán said, speaking on Hungarian live show Warrior's Hour. 'It wasn't a deal that President Donald Trump made with Ursula von der Leyen – it was Trump eating von der Leyen for breakfast. This is what happened.'
As part of the deal, the EU also committed to $750 billion in US energy purchases and $600 billion in investments in the US, going beyond previous pledges. However, it remains unclear how those purchases will be structured.
In the media appearance, Orbán didn't hold back, calling von der Leyen a 'featherweight' compared to Trump and slamming what he sees as the weakness of the EU's negotiating position.
Orbán, a constant foe of von der Leyen's Commission, also claimed the US-UK deal was 'much better than this', making it, in his view, hard to call the EU's deal a success.
