Poland's Tusk unveils new cabinet in bid to reverse decline

Donald Tusk's coalition has steadily declined in opinion polls since mid-2024. (AP pic) WARSAW : Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a cabinet reshuffle today in a bid to regain momentum amid falling approval ratings and potential clashes with the new, opposition-backed nationalist president. Since Karol Nawrocki's victory over Tusk's liberal ally Rafal Trzaskowski in June's presidential election, dissension within the ruling pro-European coalition has grown, raising doubt about its future under a veto-wielding head of state. Under the reshuffle, foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski was promoted to deputy prime minister while keeping his current post. 'We as a government need a very strong political figure in international relations,' Tusk told reporters. To consolidate oversight of economic affairs, Tusk announced a new super ministry combining finance and the economy to be headed by current finance minister Andrzej Domanski. 'The most important structural undertaking is building a viable financial and economic centre. There will be a single centre operating transparently and implementing a comprehensive economic policy,' Tusk said. Milosz Motyka from junior coalition party PSL will head a newly created energy ministry. A judge, Waldemar Zurek, was named to run the justice ministry as it seeks to shore up rule of law standards that critics say deteriorated under the previous nationalist government. Tusk's coalition has steadily declined in opinion polls since mid-2024. This month, the share of government opponents has risen to 48% while the government's support has held steady at 32%, the latest CBOS poll showed. Polls have traced the government's drop in popularity to public disenchantment with a lack of concrete achievements, with the opposition landing effective blows over a failure to stem undocumented migration into Poland. The reshuffle drew criticism from the main opposition Law and Justice party, which lost power in the 2023 election. 'Reconstruction means nothing other than the further destruction of Poland. Some incompetents were replaced by others,' the party's vice president, Mariusz Blaszczak, said in a post on X. Nawrocki, who will be sworn in as president on Aug 6, has questioned the coalition's pro-European, liberal agenda but said he is willing to accept moves to increase the tax-free pay threshold and deregulate parts of the economy. 'All laws that will be good for Poles will meet with my approval,' Nawrocki said in the televised interview on Monday. Tusk, in his remarks announcing the reshuffle, called on supporters not to despair after Nawrocki's presidential victory. 'No defeat, including the presidential election, justifies this mood or despair, this slackness, these thoughts of surrender… The time of post-election trauma definitely ends today,' the former European Council president said.

Realme Note 70T listed on European retailer: 50+13MP cameras, 6,000mAh battery

After a couple of weeks of leaks, the Realme Note 70T is finally official – well, it's fully revealed, anyway, by a retailer in Poland. Realme Poland still doesn't list the phone officially, though. Realme Note 70T There's no price on it yet, just a 'Notify' button for now. The phone is listed in Black and Gold with 4/128GB and 4/256GB variants. We're not seeing an option with more RAM and 4GB is tight these days. The Realme Note 70T is powered by the Unisoc T7250, a refresh of the T615. It's a 12nm chip with 2x Cortex-A75 (1.8GHz) and 6x Cortex-A55 (1.6GHz) CPU cores and a Mali-G57 MP1 GPU. It also has a 4G modem. It runs Android 15 with Realme UI 5.0 out of the box. Realme Note 70T in Black Realme Note 70T in Gold On the front is a 6.74' LCD with 720p+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. There's a notification LED, but it's on the back – it's the light ring on the camera island. Said island is home to a 50MP main camera and a 13MP ultra-wide. There's no word on video recording, but we don't think the chipset is capable of 4K anyway. The selfie camera in the notch has a 5MP sensor. Realme Note 70T The battery capacity is listed as 6,000mAh and supports only 15W charging. On the plus side, the retailer's page notes that the phone ships with a 15W charger. The battery should last two days of normal usage. The page also boasts of 'ArmorShell Protection', which is Realme's term for phones that pass MIL-STD-810H testing. For ingress protection, the phone is rated IP54 (splash proof). The Realme Note 70T is rated IP54 and has passed MIL-STD-810H testing This isn't quite a proper launch for the Realme Note 70T, but it's a matter of hours or, at worst, days. It's similar to the Realme Narzo 80 Lite 4G that was announced earlier today – same chipset, same screen, same design, but different cameras and batteries. Thanks to our tipster for sending this in! EU pact could stop ‘hostile' states from using migrants for politics: Rights agency

The EU migration pact could help member states prevent 'hostile actors' from using migrants and refugees to put pressure on them, the bloc's rights agency said on Wednesday. Some countries outside the European Union have repeatedly funneled migrants and refugees to the bloc's external borders to put pressure on the EU, the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) said in a paper on the topic. The EU migration pact is due to come into force in mid-2026 and would allow countries to return rejected asylum applicants more quickly, the FRA said. 'The effective and speedy implementation of return procedures in full respect of applicable safeguards may discourage the instrumentalization of migrants and refugees,' the FRA paper noted. It said that EU countries could impose sanctions on 'hostile' states or restrict the visas of people from those countries as part of a raft of measures to discourage the practice. Poland, for instance, has accused Belarus and Russia of flying in or bussing people from Afghanistan, Iraq, Ethiopia and other nations to their borders with the EU member state before trying to direct them across. Rights groups have subsequently accused Warsaw of unlawfully, and sometimes violently, forcing people back across its borders. In 2023 and 2024, almost 60 people died along the EU land border with Belarus, many from hypothermia while stranded there, according to the FRA. The new pact will allow EU members to prioritize the processing of asylum claims by those subject to this sort of instrumentalization, deploying additional staff to help, the FRA added. 'Instead of punishing migrants and refugees who are being used and abused for political gains, EU countries need to direct their measures towards the hostile actors,' FRA director Sirpa Rautio said. 'Some of the current responses to instrumentalization may undermine the protection of fundamental rights at the EU's borders, including the right to asylum,' she added. In its paper, the FRA said that 'certain rights, such as the prohibition of torture or sending people back to where their lives and freedom are at risk, are absolute'. 'They cannot be limited under any circumstances,' the group said.
