Should India Play Kuldeep Yadav In 4th Test? Ex-England Pacer Gives His Take On Combination

Former England pacer Steve Harmison feels that India might consider playing three spinners in their playing XI for the fourth Test against England in Manchester starting on Wednesday. India picked two spinners - Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar - in the last two Tests in Edgbaston and Lord's. The result in Edgbaston was in India's favour, while they narrowly lost by 22 runs at Lord's to go 1-2 down in the five-match series. With the series on the line, Harminson backed the Shubman Gill-led side to include Kuldeep Yadav in the playing XI at Old Trafford on rainy conditions. 'If it's going to rain anywhere in England, and it hasn't rained here in almost three months, it'll be in Manchester. If there's any venue where you might consider playing two spinners or even three, it's Manchester. England won't go that route; they have got Liam Dawson, but India might consider it. I expect a wicket very similar to what we saw at Edgbaston and Lord's, one that will break up as the game progresses and offer turn later on. But I don't see much pace or bounce in it, and once again, we could be looking at a lower-scoring affair," Harmison said on JioHotstar's 'Follow The Blues'. 'The wicket in the fourth Test is not going to offer bounce to Kuldeep, but it will spin as the Test match progresses. And with the last three Tests all going deep into the fifth day, India have to seriously consider playing a second or even a third spinner. At the moment, their side is well-balanced. But the challenge lies in finding a way to bring Kuldeep Yadav in. You cannot drop Washington Sundar or Ravindra Jadeja," he said. "So, can you play three spinners? That would be a big call, especially considering the situation around Jasprit Bumrah. Picking Kuldeep can be the right move, but how would you fit him in? There may have to be a tough decision - is it Sundar who misses out? I wouldn't want to be the one making that call," he added.

"Would Drop Nitish Reddy And...": Ex-India Star Suggests Big Changes For 4th Test vs England

India faced a shocking 22-run defeat against England in the third Test at Lord's, London. With the win, England took 2-1 lead in the five-match series. India were chasing a target of 193 when they lost back-to-back wickets and the onus fell on the shoulders of Ravindra Jadeja. The all-rounder was joined by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the battle but India got bundled out for 170. As Shubman Gill and co gear up for the fourth Test, former batter Dilip Vengsarkar suggested two big changes in the team. Speaking to Revsportz, Vengsarkar stated that he would drop all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar to bring in the likes of Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav. "I would drop Nitish Reddy and perhaps one more player to make room for Arshdeep. I think Siraj and Bumrah should keep their places, but Reddy could make way. Kuldeep Yadav could also replace someone like Washington Sundar. You need five bowlers in a Test match to win it. If your six batters can't put up a good total, the bowlers need to take responsibility. You can't win a Test match with part-time bowlers," Vengsarkar said in an interview with RevSportz. "I would pick Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav. Arshdeep is a good left-arm bowler who can move the ball in the air and off the wicket, which is crucial in English conditions. He can also reverse swing the ball, which is important. I have seen him bowl," he added. Pacer Arshdeep Singh is yet to make his debut for India in the longest format. As Jasprit Bumrah can miss the fourth Test due to his workload mangament, there are chances that Arshdeep can get his maiden Test cap. On the other hand, Kuldeep Yadav is also yet to feature in the Playing XI in the ongoing series. There were talks of getting included in the second Test but the team chose Washington Sundar instead of him. The fourth Test between India and England will kick-start from July 23 in Manchester.

Washington Sundar Told To 'Keep Quiet' After England's Dramatic Win At Lord's

Last Updated: Washington Sundar had declared that India will easily win the Lord's Test following the conclusion of play on Day 4. England completed a thrilling victory in the final session of the third Test against India at Lord's on Monday to regain the lead in the five-match series. After a batting collapse, India showed grit with the lower order showing some fight as Ravindra Jadeja scored a half-century while farming the strike with no. 10 Jasprit Bumrah and no. 11 Mohammed Siraj. India eventually fell short in chase of 193. It was a fiery show from England bowlers as they celebrated animatedly in front of India batters. Jofra Archer produced an impressive show on return to Test cricket as he accounted for Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar on the final morning of the contest while giving them dramatic send-offs. Sundar had played a key role in limiting England's lead to 192 in the second innings with a four-wicket haul and despite the pitch playing some tricks, exuded confidence in his batters to chase down the target. He declared at the end of Day 4 that India will by 'definitely win', probably after lunch. His comments backfired with India suffering their second defeat of the tour. Former England cricketer David Lloyed noted Sundar's declaration and advised the India allrounder to let his talent do the talking. 'The young man (Sundar) was brilliant with the ball then confidently declared that India would easily win the game easily," Lloyd wrote in a column for the Daily Mail. 'There was no doubt that England heard those comments because they let him know when he walked out to bat. Anyways, he lasted four balls. A classic case of keep quiet and let your talent do the talking on the pitch. I'm sure he'll learn." Search for a hero. Ravindra Jadeja drew on all of his experience. What a player and what a shift from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj with the bat too. A truly herculean effort from Ben Stokes and it was lovely that Shoaib Bashir took the final wicket. A Test Match for the ages and I was thrilled that they were all embracing each other at the end. A massive tick from me, fellas. On to Manchester. The fourth Test will be played in Manchester from July 23. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 14:28 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IND vs ENG 3rd Test: 'Has he actually said that?' Ex-England cricketer baffled by Indian player's comment at Lord's

Jofra Archer catches out Washington Sundar during day five of the 3rd Test Match at Lord's on July 14(Photo by) India fell to England in the 3rd Test of the five-match series after a hard-fought battle at Lord's. While the defeat means that India have now dropped to 2-1 behind the hosts in the series, it makes the penultimate Test a must-win affair for Shubman Gill and his men. However, spirits in the Indian camp were sky high ahead of the second innings after the hosts were bowled out for 192. India star Washington Sundar , who played an impressive part in India's efforts to bowl out England in the second innings in particular, was extremely confident of securing the win. In conversation with the media, the 25-year-old even went on the record to state that India 'will' win. This elicited a sharp reaction from England batter and former captain Jos Buttler . Speaking in the "For The Love Of Cricket " podcast alongside Stuart Broad, the Englishman argued that Sundar must have gotten his words wrong. "I heard it and then I thought, has he actually said that?" said Buttler. He was referring to a clip where the young player told the media that 'It's going to be amazing when we win the game and go 2-1 up in this series. "I wonder if he's just got his words out wrong," said Buttler. Buttler also said that Sundar's comments were made with such confidence that showing that clip to the hosts ahead of the final day would have been enough to get them fired up and charged to win the game on Monday. Washington Sundar press conference: On Gautam Gambhir's support, last over drama, winning at Lord's He proceeded to claim that Sundar must have regretted his words immediately after the interview. Broad however, backed Sundar, saying that his extremely confident words were most probably owed to fatigue and confusion after the day's play. Poll How do you feel about India's chances in the final two Tests of the series? Confident they'll win. Nervous about their performance. In the end, Sundar and the rest of his teammates were forced to admit defeat on Monday as England pulled off a stunning victory on Day 5. The hosts successfully managed to restrict India to 170 despite a marathon effort from Ravindra Jadeja. Sundar ended up going out for a duck in the second innings as Jofra Archer claimed his wicket. Create Account There were thrills and spills until that last wicket fell in dramatic fashion. There were some incredible individual performances. Tension and tempers frayed occasionally and both skippers, Ben Stokes and Shubman Gill, were not surprised as they expected things to blow up in this top-rated series. One of the most talked about fast-bowler in recent years, Jofra Archer, was back in the England squad after four years of being mollycoddled in cotton balls to help him recover from his nagging injuries. And he delivered with three wickets and one brilliant catch. There was that solid, straight-forward batting ace Joe Root, wicket-keeping-batsman ace Jimmy Smith and skipper Stokes, the brains behind this victory. The brilliant all-rounder Ajay Jadeja, fast-bowling phenomenon Jasprit Bumrah, wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, spinner Washington Sunder and KL Rahul, that man with those breath-taking cover drives. All these luminaries rose to the moment to deliver brilliance inside the five days at the hallowed Lord's ground that was also packed to the rafters even on the fifth day which is a rarity. There was a good reason for it this time as Stokes' squad had bowled itself into a winning position at the end of the fourth day. But the majority of the fans, who were Indian, were hoping and praying that the away team would pull out a miracle victory. India kept pegging away at that total and the England fans chewed on their finger nails as the visitors inched closer. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. At the start of the day, India needed just 135 with six wickets in hand after being set 193 for victory. The previous evening England had left India tottering at 58 for four wickets. But that target looked gigantic for India at the lunch break as England appeared on course for a far more comfortable win after it had reduced India to 112 for eight. But here is where Jadeja showed his resilience and, along with Bumrah, the pair made the home team sweat as they spent two hours at the wicket. Man-of-the-match Stokes made the breakthrough by enticing Bumrah to sky the ball, but Jadeja continued to frustrate England as he reached 50 off 150 balls. Then the unexpected unfolded. In one brilliant move, Stokes brought on his injured spinner Shoaib Bashir, who had his non-bowling hand taped up. Bashir's delivery to Mohammad Siraj ricocheted off the bat of the bottom-order batsman, trickled on to the stumps and dislodged the bails. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Bashir, who was mobbed by his team, will miss the next two Tests as he broke a finger attempting a catch off his on delivery on day three and will undergo surgery. England had pulled off a 22-run victory in an encounter that could have gone either way until that fifth day. Jadeja looked forlorn and dejected at the other end as he saw the bails come off Siraj's wickets. Both Root and Joe Crawley showed some class by consoling Siraj after Bashir had broken the hearts of a billion Indian fans. India matched England's first innings total of 387 thanks in large part to Rahul's 100, injured wicket-keeper Pant's 74 and Jadeja ramming his fourth straight half-century in vain. Scores: England 387 (Root 104, Brydon Carse 56, Jimmy Smith 51, Bumrah five for 74) and 192 (Root 40, Sundar four for 22). India 387 (Rahul 100, Pant 74, Jadeja 72) and 170 (Jadeja 61 not out, Stokes three for 48, Archer three for 55). STARC DESTROYS WINDIES Paceman Mitchell Starc destroyed the West Indies with the fastest five-wicket haul in Test cricket as Australia crushed the home team by 196 runs for a 3-0 whitewash in Kingston, Jamaica. West Indies was bowled out for 27, the second-lowest total in Test history after New Zealand's 26 against England in 1955. Playing in his 100th Test, Starc wrecked the home team's top order in just 15 balls to finish with the incredible figures of six wickets for nine runs! And the other pace bowler to get into the annals of the game was Scott Boland. He became the 10th Aussie to take a Test hat-trick as the West Indies' second innings lasted a mere 14.3 overs and seven of their batsmen were dismissed for ducks. Earlier, the visitors were shot out for 121, their lowest score against Windies in 30 years, with pacemen Alzarri Joseph completing career-best figures of five for 27 and Shamar Joseph taking four for 34. Scores: 225 and 121. West Indies: 143 and 27. West Indies skipper Roston Chase said it was 'quite embarrassing' to be bowled for less than 30 runs. 'It's quite heartbreaking, because I think we did it in all three tests, and we're not really learning from our mistakes,' he added. Check out our sports section for the latest news and analysis.
