Apple Watch 2026 leak hints at Touch ID, could bring big security boost to Apple Pay
Apple has just a few weeks to go before it unveils the Apple Watch Series 11, Watch Ultra 3, and Watch SE 3. These new models are expected to look quite similar to the current generation, with minor updates in hardware and software. But if you are wondering when the Apple Watch will see a real leap forward, a recent report by Macworld suggests that the bigger changes might arrive in 2026 models. According to the report, Apple's internal developer code has revealed some interesting details about future Apple Watches, including the possibility of Touch ID coming to the device. Now, if this happens, it could mark one of the biggest and most important security upgrades to the smartwatch since its report further mentions that the code spotted refers specifically to the 2026 Apple Watch models. The code includes mention of 'AppleMesa,' which is Apple's long-time internal codename for Touch ID. Now, this doesn't mean Touch ID is confirmed for the Apple Watch, but it does show that Apple has at least been testing and experimenting with the idea. None of the current models, including those coming this year, reference Touch ID in any form. That makes sense, as Apple is likely to keep this feature for a more significant update in the near big question is how Apple would actually implement Touch ID on a watch. One possibility is that it could be built into the side button, something that Apple has already secured patents for. Another option is an optical sensor under the display, which would allow authentication directly from the screen. There's also the chance Apple could place a sensor on the underside of the watch. While Macworld's findings are based on real internal code, it is still possible that Apple decides not to move forward with Touch ID on the Apple Watch, at least not right away. But considering the company's history of refining and expanding biometric authentication across its devices, it would not be surprising if Touch ID eventually made its way to the now, all eyes will be on Apple's September event, where the Apple Watch Series 11, Watch Ultra 3, and Watch SE 3 are expected to debut.
