BBC make huge change to longstanding drama Casualty

BBC make huge change to longstanding drama Casualty The BBC noted the need to "include authentic representation of Wales" and "reflect the reality of the Welsh NHS" The BBC has confirmed its popular drama series Casualty will remain at the same filming location in Cardiff and that the show will now be set in Wales too (Image: BBC ) Drama series Casualty will be making a huge location switch as part of the BBC's latest plans. The broadcasting corporation has confirmed that the location of Casualty's hospital will change from Bristol to Wales. The plan comes as the BBC has offered an invitation to tender for the drama series. While the medical drama, which has been aired on our small screens for 39 years, will have all rights retained by the BBC and will continue to be shown on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, the tendering process will decide which producer makes it. ‌ Producers are now invited to pitch, but will need to follow a full list of eligibility criteria, including filming and setting the fictional hospital in Wales. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter . ‌ The programme is currently set in the fictional city of Holby in the fictional county of Wyvern, which is based on its former filming location in Bristol. However, since 2011, the programme has been filmed at the BBC's Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff Bay. The BBC has confirmed it will remain at the same filming location. In its invitation to tender, the BBC writes: "The tender process for Casualty will seek to build on the unique strengths of the show in the BBC One schedule and evolve the show into Welsh portrayal while maintaining the core attraction to the loyal fan base. "We are asking tenderers to include authentic representation of Wales and reflect the reality of the Welsh NHS. ‌ "This is not about radical change of the show, although the move to Welsh portrayal will mean a new fictional hospital based in Wales, and tenderers will need to address this core change in their editorial pitch to the evaluation panel. "The successful tenderer will need to be able to demonstrate how to incorporate Welsh portrayal and maintain familiarity at the same time." This isn't the first time a BBC drama series has had to switch location as part of the programme's storyline. ‌ The popular drama series Waterloo Road was filmed and set in Rochdale between the first and seventh series, before production was moved to Scotland for three series, with teachers and students moving country in order to maintain continuity. David Pembrey, Chief Operating Officer, BBC Content, said: "The award-winning Casualty is a hugely important continuing drama which has been on our screens since 1986. "We are opening it to competition as part of our ongoing commitment to delivering the very best value for audiences." Article continues below

He was responsible for the deaths of Sylver McQueen, Silas Blissett and Verity Hutchinson, and the attempted murder of DeMarcus Westwood. With the Hollyoaks residents living in 2026, Bobby is returning to the village three years later - but with a brand new face. Hollyoaks bosses have cast Waterloo Road star Zak Sutcliffe for a dramatic new storyline. The actor has began filming at the show's set in Liverpool and will appear as the recast version of Bobby in the next few weeks. Speaking to Digital Spy, Zac said: "I'm having a lot of fun with my time on Hollyoaks so far. It's exciting to get into something gritty and complex." Zak is best known to soap fans for playing bad boy Schuey Weever in Waterloo Road. His other acting credits include roles in Doctors, Casualty, No Offence and Grimsby. The young actor also has history with Hollyoaks, as he played guest character Tommy Bradshaw for two episodes in 2021. Hollyoaks legend returning to the soap a year after quitting Bobby isn't the only soap villain that will be retuning to the Chester village. The Sun revealed that Gemma Bissix is returning to Hollyoaks after a 12 year hiatus. The blonde bombshell will reprise her role as minx Clare Devine next month despite being KILLED off. The shock twist will take place as the show celebrates its 30th birthday this year. From Hollyoaks to Hollywood James Corden played a caretaker in the early days of the soap. The former American TV host doesn't have much positive to say about his time on the soap, claiming it was "hell on earth." Since his short-lived time on the show he has gone on to bigger things including smash hit comedy Gavin and Stacey. Rachel Shenton joined the soap as aspiring glamour model Mitzeee Minniver in 2010. Over two years her character was sent to prison, got pregnant and had a number of romantic affairs. Since leaving Hollyoaks she has won an Oscar for best live action short film, The Silent Child. Rachel has also starred in White Gold and All Creatures Great and Small Emmett J. Scanlan played gangster turned anti-hero Brendan Brady. Emmett played the love interest of Steve Hayes, with their romance delighting fans until it turned violent. Since his departure Emmett has appeared in Peaky Blinders, The Fall, Gangs of London and even appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Emma Rigby joined Hollyoaks when she was 15 as Hannah Ahsworth. Hannah's eating disorder storyline was the first of it's kind on TV while other plots included being caught in a fire, gangland drug dealing and running away. Since leaving the soap in 2010 Emma has gone on to star in ABCs Once Upon a Time in Wonderland as the Red Queen. Other roles include guest appearances in Death In Paradise, Ripper Street and Fresh Meat Nico Mirallegro got his big break with Hollyoaks starring as emo Barry 'Newt' Newton. Nico's main storyline in the soap was developing schizophrenia which culminated in a suicide pact. He left the soap in 2010 and went on to star in My Mad Fat Diary, Our Girl, Rillington Place, The Ark and Common, Penance, as well as the Mike Leigh movie Peterloo and was nominated for a Bafta for his role in period drama The Village. Ricky Whittle used Hollyoaks as a stepping stone to break America. He played one of the soap's resident hunks, Calvin Valentine, from 2006 to 2011 - when he was killed off at his wedding. After leaving the soap Ricky cracked America starring in teen drama The 100 and America Gods. He also appeared in Strictly Come Dancing in 2009. Warren Brown joined Hollyoaks in 2005 for a year as evil Andy Holt. His stint on the show consisted of date rape storylines and a crime spree, before eventually being killed off. After leaving Hollyoaks, Warren became a big hitter in TV playing DS Justin Ripley in Luther, as well as major roles in a number of dramas including Liar, The Responder, Homefront and Good Cop. Wallis Day played Holly Cunningham in the soap for years before leaving. In 2021 Wallis won the role of Batwoman in DC's series, taking over from Ruby Rose. It comes after EastEnders viewers had been expecting her to reprise her role as Clare Bates on the rival BBC One soap after her on-screen dad Nigel, played by Paul Bradley, has mentioned her on air several times. Gemma appeared on Albert Square for 15 years before leaving in 2008. A source said: 'Gemma's much anticipated return to Hollyoaks has been kept top secret and her character is set to stir up plenty of on-screen drama as the soap kicks into gear around it's 30th birthday. 'She is delighted to be asked back, especially as she's rising from the dead. The scenes will be explosive.' Gemma's Hollyoaks character Clare wreaked havoc but met a brutal demise in 2013 when she was mowed down by Doctor Browning, following a shove from Mercedes McQueen. Reflecting on her departure at the time, Gemma said: 'I think at the time, Clare had had so many ups and downs. "The character has to expire at some point - you can't be that evil and not get your comeuppance.'
