Vote: Des Moines Register metro-area female Athlete of the Week for May 18-24

Des Moines metro-area high school athletic competition for the week of May 18-24 was highlighted by the 2025 Iowa high school state track and field championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The state meet saw numerous record-setting performances, including several from Des Moines metro-area female athletes. Waukee Northwest (Class 4A) and Adel-Desoto-Minburn (3A) both claimed team championships on the girls side and Van Meter took second in 2A. Advertisement There were also some notable performances in girls soccer, golf and tennis during the week. Here are the Des Moines Register's female Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of May 18-24. readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week. Aunya Van Zetten, Waukee Northwest Waukee Northwest's Aunya Van Zetten stands before her 800m sprint medley race on April 25, 2025, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Van Zetten helped the Waukee Northwest girls track and field team win four relays at the state track and field meet from May 22-24 in Des Moines. Van Zetten ran the opening leg on Northwest's 4x100 relay team that set an all-time state record with a time of 47.37 seconds during the finals on May 24. She also ran the first leg on a victorious sprint medley relay team that finished in 1:45.72 and the shuttle hurdle team that won in 1:01.10. Advertisement Van Zetten ran the third leg on the Northwest 4x200 team that won in an all-time and state-record time of 1:38.55. Josie Dufoe, ADM Dufoe won the 3A 100 hurdles and anchored the ADM girls to victory in the shuttle hurdle relay to help the Tigers take first in 3A at the state track meet on May 24 in Des Moines. Dufoe won the 100 hurdle finals in 14.50 to beat out teammate Elise Coghlan's 14:55 runner-up effort. The ADM shuttle hurdle team won in a 3A state-record time of 1:01.15 and Dufoe also helped the Tigers place second in the 4x100 and third in the 4x200. Reese Wagner, North Polk Wagner won the 3A girls high jump at the state track meet on May 22. Advertisement Wagner cleared the bar at five feet, eight inches. Her jump was the second-best among female high jumpers in all four classes at the state meet. Ava Martin, Ankeny Centennial Martin had a strong outing on offense for the 3A No. 3 Ankeny Centennial girls soccer team during a 4-0 victory over No. 12 Cedar Falls on May 20 at Cedar Falls. Martin had a hand in three goals for the Jaguars. She scored once and dished out two assists. Josie Bemis, Van Meter Bemis is an individual qualifier for the Class 2A girls state golf tournament after placing third at the 2A Region 4 meet on May 21 at the Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center. Advertisement Bemis shot an 81 over 18 holes. It was the highest score among golfers at the meet who were not part of a state-qualifying team.
