Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane weather: Huge rain bomb to strike
Millions of Aussies are being warned to brace for a deluge of wet weather as one major city is set to be lashed with a month's worth of rain in just one week. Heavy rain and damaging winds have already set in, with more than 100mm of rain smashing Sydney and NSW 's central coast as conditions ramped up on Sunday night. Emergency Services responded to more than 250 calls for help across the weekend, including 60 calls in metro Sydney as trees were uprooted and residents faced leaking roofs and damage to their properties. At least one person was taken to the hospital from eight flood rescues from vehicles in northern NSW. The wild weather is expected to stick around for the rest of the week, with more than a month's worth of rain forecast to fall within days. A severe weather warning of heavy rainfall, damaging winds and dangerous surf conditions stretches from NSW's mid-north coast to the Central Coast. BoM senior meteorologist Angus Hines said a band of rain that formed overnight into Monday was shifting north to the central and northern coastal regions. Rain totals are expected to build 'slowly' through to Thursday, with the worst set for Monday and Tuesday. 'There will be days of persistent rainfall... it will be very, very, very wet over the next several days,' Mr Hines said. Mr Hines called the extended nature of the wet weather 'significant' with rain expected in the same region for some days. He added that the regions with the highest risk of damaging winds were the central, Hunter and mid-north coasts, along with parts of the central and northern ranges. 'It is certainly the Hunter and the mid-north coast where those strongest rainfall totals are expected well and truly exceeding the top of the scale,' Mr Hines said. 'Certainly over 150mm, some places that could be closer to 250 or 300 by the time it's all done.' 'Having that much rain three or four days in a row can lead to significant flood impacts, road closures and potential for some inundation of homes or properties or businesses,' Mr Hines said. The wild weather is expected to stick around for the entire week, with conditions easing on Saturday. Dangerous beach conditions are also possible from Sydney's southern beaches to Seal Rocks. Gusts of around 100km/h are expected over the Hunter and mid-north coast regions. Wyee, in the Central Coast region, had the state's highest rain total between Sunday 9am and Monday 6am with 121mmm, while nearby Dora Creek had 117mm. The ongoing rain has already triggered flash flooding, including the Wakehurst Parkway between North Narrabeen and Oxford Falls and The Esplanade in Narrabeen. Both were closed due to the flash flooding. It comes as more than 2,200 people are currently without power across Sydney and the Central Coast following Sunday night's extreme weather. Residents in Sydney's suburbs of Allawah, Beacon Hill, Frenchs Forest, Narraweena, and Oxford Fall are affected, while those in Kincumber and Macmasters Beach have also been impacted.
