Netflix's price hikes and ad tier will fuel a record quarter, analysts say
Netflix seems poised for a record-setting quarter, even as its crackdown on freeloaders cools off. Wall Street expects Netflix to report a best-ever $11.1 billion in revenue and $7.08 in earnings per share when it shares second-quarter results on Thursday, based on consensus estimates compiled by S&P Global. That would be up from first-quarter marks of $10.5 billion and $6.61, respectively. Analysts think Netflix's primary growth drivers this quarter will be the price increases it implemented earlier this year and its budding advertising tier. That tier drove nearly half of Netflix's subscriber growth in the US in the first five months of 2025, according to data firm Antenna. The fast-growing, cheaper plan is on a strong trajectory and could eventually bring in more revenue per user than the ad-free tier, S&P Global media analyst Melissa Otto told Business Insider. Price hikes and its ad tier have become Netflix's main growth catalysts as its password-sharing clampdown runs its course. The streaming giant shattered its subscriber growth record in 2024 when it stopped people from sharing passwords. It generated 41 million net sign-ups last year, including 18.9 million in the fourth quarter. However, Netflix has likely picked most of that low-hanging fruit. The company no longer shares its subscriber count, though Antenna estimates that its gross monthly additions have leveled off in the US. Its US resubscribe rate has also rebounded, which implies that it's getting fewer first-time sign-ups. "Netflix has largely run out of individuals who were motivated to pay for Netflix for the first time because they lost access via another household's account," Antenna analysts wrote this week. A Netflix spokesperson declined to comment ahead of earnings. Life after the password-sharing crackdown Netflix analysts are confident that the company can keep growing despite the benefits from its password crackdown wearing off. "We continue to view Netflix as well-positioned given the company's unmatched scale in streaming, further runway for subscriber growth, significant opportunities in advertising, and sports/live," Bank of America's Jessica Reif Ehrlich wrote in a mid-July note. Netflix should benefit from a strong second-half content slate that includes new seasons of hits "Wednesday" and "Stranger Things" as well as "Happy Gilmore 2" and a pair of live NFL games on Christmas, Reif Ehrlich wrote. It also has momentum from the new season of "Squid Game." And although Netflix has lost viewership ground to YouTube in the last year, it's still crushing its paid peers. Its viewership share is about as much as Disney+, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video combined. "The viewership data has been strong, suggesting that engagement's good," UBS media analyst John Hodulik told BI. He added that this means cancellations should remain low. Games could be another growth lever. Netflix hasn't mastered gaming yet, but many of its rivals aren't even trying. "No one's really cracked the code on the streaming gaming, and it would seem that Netflix may be in a great position for that," Otto said.

'It's scary at moments': Creators say 'Wednesday' season 2 will bring real stakes and fear
If you thought 'Wednesday' was creepy and kooky before, season 2 is about to crank the horror up several notches. According to the show's creators, Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, the new season won't just flirt with spooky but dive headfirst into intense territory. When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Millar said: 'There's some moments which are definitely horror movie-worthy. We have that in season 1, but I think this season there are moments that are very intense, I'll say.' He added: 'Season 2 definitely has some moments which are more straightforward horror, and we're very aware that the show is watched by everybody in terms of the age groups. 'We want to make sure that it's never torture porn, but that there's enough bite to it that it feels that there are real stakes and that people die in this world, and it's scary at moments. And I think that's the great tonal shift that the show makes between comedy and horror.' After getting an early glimpse of 'Wednesday' season 2 through the official trailer (which included the first six minutes of the premiere) fans were recently treated to even more footage thanks to a brand-new trailer from the streaming service. In a chilling moment, Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) has a premonition that her friend Enid (Emma Myers) is going to die, and that she'll be the one responsible. The creators also teased a shift toward a more 'complex mystery' in season 2, and it looks like Wednesday's unsettling premonition might be at the heart of it. Gough said: 'I also just feel like the world is bigger and you get to really explore other characters.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. I'm genuinely glad this season is taking a darker turn as it just feels right for Wednesday. The blend of gothic horror and biting humor is what makes the Addams universe so iconic, and leaning further into the intense, eerie side of things only makes the world feel richer and more true to its roots. Ortega even said herself (h/t Vanity Fair): 'I think the feel that we're going for is a little bit more horror-inspired. Not to say that suddenly we're the goriest show of all time. I mean, there's six-year-olds watching. [For example], we're doing this thing now where Wednesday just kind of appears. She is a little bit of a jump scare herself.' "Wednesday" season 2 will be released on Netflix in two parts: Part 1 on August 6, and part 2 on September 3. Wednesday season 2 theory 'seals' Enid's heartbreaking death
A new trailer for the second season of Netflix's Wednesday has revealed that the fate of Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) hangs in the balance - and it's all down to Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) The second season of 'Wednesday' is set to premiere on Netflix on August 6, and the latest trailer reveals a chilling psychic vision experienced by Wednesday Addams, portrayed by Jenna Ortega. In her vision, she sees the grave of her best friend and roommate, Enid Sinclair (played by Emma Myers), and shockingly, it seems that Wednesday is to blame for her demise. "Enid dies, and it's all my fault," she is heard uttering. With Enid's life hanging in the balance, Wednesday is thrust into a race against time to save her. Following the release of this heart-wrenching trailer, fans have flocked to Reddit to speculate whether Enid will indeed meet her end. Reddit user Mishtimihu theorises that Wednesday's foreknowledge of Enid's potential fate will "really mess with her", leading to a rift between the two friends, reports the Express. They elaborated: "My theory is that she gets this vision early in the season and it really messes with her. She doesn't tell Enid right away because she's scared and trying to figure it out on her own. She starts pulling away, thinking maybe she's the cause of Enid's future death. "Enid notices. She was excited to see Wednesday after the break, but Wednesday acts distant and cold. Feeling rejected and confused, Enid starts getting closer to Bruno, who's just there for her. And yeah, he looks a lot like Wednesday, which makes the whole situation more complicated. "Eventually, probably near the end of Part 1, they have a fight. Enid calls her out for shutting her out. And that's when Wednesday finally tells her about the vision. Maybe not even on purpose, she just blurts it out during the argument. Something like, 'I saw your grave. I thought I'd get you killed if I stayed close'. "Enid's hurt. Not just about the vision, but because Wednesday didn't trust her with it sooner. She walks away. Then the part ends on a cliffhanger, possibly with something off about Bruno that raises questions." ItsThe_____ForMe proposed that Enid's destiny will likely serve as the dramatic cliffhanger bridging the first and second parts of the series. Raylalayla contributed: "I think that's probably mostly right. Enid will either die or find out about her incoming death in episode 4 and I also think that's when Tyler might escape." Fellow viewer Icy_Gene_7574 theorised that Wednesday's dark tears shown in the trailer represent her grief over Enid's demise. Speculation has emerged that the black tears vision relates to emotional turmoil, with one fan explaining: "As for Enid, if she passes away it would all be Wednesday's fault cause Wednesday is the one who cracks cases and solves mysteries and she drags Enid. I think that's why she cries black tears for Enid."
