Jenna Ortega Says It's Patronizing to be Known for Playing Wednesday
It's no mystery that Jenna Ortega's breakout role was Wednesday , but she had been trying her hand at getting more mature roles even before she was cast as the icon of goth culture with projects like X and Miller's Girl . As it turns out, Ortega has been feeling 'unhappy' about the sudden success of Wednesday , and says it's been tough for her to be taken seriously since she's playing a schoolgirl despite being in her 20s. In a recent talk with Harper's Bazaar, Ortega says: '… Ater the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person… After the pressure, the attention — as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary.' For context, Wednesday was such a breakout hit that it managed to get more views than the last season of Stranger Things . Now the actress is expecting to play Wednesday Addams for a few more years, but it's going to be tough on her since the role is for a pretty young girl, and being short, Ortega is already kind of put into a box. Ortega continues: 'You know, it's like how you're dressed in the schoolgirl costume… There's just something about it that's very patronizing. Also, when you're short, people are already physically looking down on you… girls, if they don't stay as this perfect image of how they were first introduced to you, then it's 'Ah, something's wrong. She's changed. She sold her soul.' But you're watching these women at the most pivotal times in their lives; they're experimenting because that's what you do.' For now, Ortega is still thankful for her global fans, but she's trying her best to 'give back to them' while at the same time finding projects that are 'creatively fulfilling' for her. Catch Ortega back in Wednesday when Season 2 comes out Aug. 6 on Netflix.

Jenna Ortega says she was an unhappy person after sudden Wednesday stardom
Jenna Ortega has said she was an 'unhappy person' after feeling increased pressure and attention when she shot to global fame in the Netflix series Wednesday. The first season, which sees Ortega play the morbid character Wednesday Addams and arrive at a mysterious private school, is listed by the streaming giant as its most popular show – ahead of Stranger Things and Adolescence. Advertisement The American actress, 22, who had roles in Netflix series You and Disney Channel show Stuck In The Middle before Wednesday, told Harper's Bazaar that she felt 'incredibly misunderstood' when she became famous. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Harper's BAZAAR (@harpersbazaarus) 'To be quite frank, after the show and trying to figure everything out, I was an unhappy person,' she also said. 'After the pressure, the attention — as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary.' The series, which sees Wednesday try to control her emerging psychic ability and solves crimes, is returning for a second season, with Dame Joanna Lumley joining the cast as Grandmama and Steve Buscemi as Barry Dort, the new principal of the school, Nevermore Academy. Advertisement Ortega also said 'you just don't feel like you're being taken seriously', after explaining that she has to wear a schoolgirl outfit in the show when she is a 'young woman'. She said: 'It's like how you're dressed in the schoolgirl costume… There's just something about it that's very patronising. Also, when you're short, people are already physically looking down on you.' Ortega also said that it is different for rising female stars 'if they don't stay as this perfect image of how they were first introduced to you, then it's 'Ah, something's wrong. She's changed. She sold her soul'. Jenna Ortega was also in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. (Yui Mok/PA) 'But you're watching these women at the most pivotal times in their lives; they're experimenting because that's what you do.' Advertisement The actress follows child star Millie Bobby Brown, who has also made remarks hitting out at social media and the press for making comments about her growing older. Stranger Things actress Brown, 21, wrote on Instagram that the media 'was dissecting my face, my body, my choices' because they think she should be 'frozen in time' as a child actor. She also wrote: 'Disillusioned people can't handle seeing a girl become a woman on her terms, not theirs. I refuse to apologise for growing up. 'I refuse to make myself smaller to fit the unrealistic expectations of people who can't handle seeing a girl become a woman.' Advertisement However, Ortega did say she was 'very grateful' for the fans of Wednesday, who have copied her viral black dress dance, and enjoyed the programme, and said she hopes to make 'older and bolder and different' projects in the future. Since Wednesday saw her nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe, Ortega has been in the 2024 Beetlejuice sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and 2025 dark fantasy film Death Of A Unicorn. Wednesday season two, which sees Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones continuing to play Morticia Addams, comes out on Netflix on August 6 with a first part and a second part coming on September 3. Created by cartoonist Charles Addams, the macabre family have inspired a 1960s TV show, and 1990s films starring Anjelica Huston and Christina Ricci, who also appears in Wednesday as a teacher. Jenna Ortega sparks outrage among Netflix fans after revealing Wednesday Addams role left her 'unhappy'
Jenna Ortega has sparked outrage among Netflix fans after revealing her Wednesday Addams role left her 'unhappy.' The 22-year-old, who has been acting since 2012, became a household name thanks to her part in the comedy series that reached screens in 2022. Unfortunately for fans, the star recently revealed that the role was not as fulfilling for her as it was for them. In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Ortega revealed that she was 'an unhappy person' once she received all of the attention from Wednesday. 'After the pressure, the attention - as somebody who's quite introverted, that was so intense and so scary.' And although Ortega is returning to the show for a second season, she opened up about how doing the show comes with cons - especially for the future of her career. 'I'm doing a show I'm going to be doing for years where I play a schoolgirl,' she shared. 'But I'm also a young woman.' In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Ortega admitted that she was 'unhappy' after the intense attention and pressure she felt after playing Wednesday She went on to explain that playing Wednesday could also potentially limit the roles that she is able to land in the future. 'You just don't feel like you're being taken seriously [as a child star becoming a grown-up actor],' she said. 'There's just something about it that's very patronizing.' This sentiment didn't exactly go down well with fans of the show who spoke out on social media about Ortega's words. Many users were quick to jump on the rising star for complaining about the role that thrust her into the spotlight. 'The Whiniest Generation,' one user wrote while another mirrored this sentiment by saying, 'Christ! Pay me millions of dollars and I'll dress up as a school girl!! F**king Gen Z.' 'Oh please,' another commented, followed by the eye-rolling emoji. Other users blamed Ortega for the state of her own career, while some defended her desire to grow her craft 'Why is she doing Season 2 then?' another user offered. One user even commented, 'Well McDonald's is always hiring. Plenty of places are.. Find a new career. No one is forcing acting on ya!' Others pointed a finger at Ortega for the state of her career, writing on X, formerly Twitter: 'Then she needs to pick better films to be in if she wants to be taken seriously by the general public. 'Her choices do not reflect how she talks and aspires to be at all.' Others agreed, stating that she needed a 'new agent.' But some super fans ran to Ortega's defense, stating that there was nothing wrong with her comments.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The second season of Wednesday will be 'very intense' and have horror movie moments, the creator has promised. The hit Netflix show first premiered in 2022, following Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams as she attended Nevermore Academy – a school for children with supernatural powers – and promptly found herself smack bang in a murder mystery. She was joined in the star-studded cast by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán, who played parents Morticia and Gomez, while Emma Myers stole the show as her roommate, Enid Sinclair. It became a runaway success and is the streamer's most-watched program of all time, with more than 250million views – beating Stranger Things season four, and Adolescence. Ahead of the second season finally being released in August, co-creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough shed light on what we can expect, teasing that things at Nevermore get very dark for Wednesday and co… Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. 'There's some moments which are definitely horror movie-worthy,' Miles told Entertainment Weekly. 'We have that in season one, but I think this season there are moments that are very intense, I'll say. 'Season two definitely has some moments which are more straightforward horror, and we're very aware that the show is watched by everybody in terms of the age groups. 'So we want to make sure that it's never torture porn, but that there's enough bite to it that it feels that there are real stakes and that people die in this world, and it's scary at moments. And I think that's the great tonal shift that the show makes between comedy and horror.' 'The mystery is a little more complex than season one, but I also just feel like the world is bigger and you get to really explore other characters,' Alfred added. 'Wednesday's not in every scene, so you get to learn more about Enid, you get to learn more about Bianca [Joy Sunday].' Although fans still have a few months before getting their hands on the new episodes – with part one being released on August 6, before part two lands the following month – many were thrilled over the update. Flocking to Twitter to unpack the remarks, Micol yelled: 'HORROR IN WEDNESDAY FINALLY THANK YOU JENNA ORTEGA.' Terry agreed: 'This is the *exact* type of improvement I was hoping to see.' Eloise added: 'Wednesday baby I love you so much but I'm so happy we really are getting to know Enid and Bianca more.' Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Joanna Lumley, Thandiwe Newton, Christopher Lloyd and Haley Joel Osment are among the newcomers for season two. More Trending The official synopsis reads: 'Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), returns to prowl the Gothic halls of Nevermore Academy, where fresh foes and woes await. 'This season, Wednesday must navigate family, friends and old adversaries, propelling her into another year of delightfully dark and kooky mayhem. 'Armed with her signature razor-sharp wit and deadpan charm, Wednesday is also plunged into a new bone-chilling supernatural mystery.' Wednesday season 2 will be premiering on Netflix on August 6.
